A solid summary of how big city politics actually work

Also, on the subject of big cities, I think one big reason why conservatives hate big cities (along with the usual racism, xenophobia and homophobia) is that unlike in the suburbs and rural areas, where poverty is hidden and sequestered from pockets off affluence, you can see poverty and human misery on display. Our system of capitalism requires there to be people poor and/or unhoused people, that’s true no matter the local population density. In big cities, especially on public transit and in central business districts, you have to see the human costs of capitalism and the suffering is made all the more dramatic because it’s so physically close to such extreme affluence.

As a result, conservatives pretend that poverty only exists where it’s undeniably visible and then blame that poverty on the “Democrat” mayor and not the fact that big cities are dictatorships of capital, just like the rest of the country.

(spoiler: I've been on an anti-car kick lately. I don't disagree with you, but I have a different perspective)

Conservatives hate big cities because they are designed around pedestrians and public transport, not around cars. There are no giant parking lots and grotesque roads. They hate them because their giant SUV becomes a liability with poor gas mileage and difficulty parallel parking. They hate them because they have to share the road with bicyclists who can get through traffic faster than they can.

I think it's also that cities can level the playing field, if done properly. Everybody shares the same subway. The parks are free and accessible to everybody. And, most importantly, everybody mingles and nobody is excluded or judged. You know how much it burns a conservative to see a black man in drag walking down the street and nobody is making a big deal out of it?
