Help me understand what I should be looking for in hiking shoes? I have zero idea where to start.

I come in ignorance.

These are what I have. They held up for hikes in the snow, they’ve been submerged in water. Only got them this year but did quite a bit in them, they have held up great and are pretty comfy for hiking boots. I’ve had times I’ve taken bad steps on a rock or something that I thought could hurt my toe and I was okay with the boots.

If you have an REI near you, go and ask for assistance, they have some pretty good employees who know about about outdoors stuff.

I would first ask of how serious of hiking you’re planning on doing. If it’s all dirt trail stuff, you’d be fine with just a trail sneaker. If you are looking to do far more serious backpacking with a heavy pack, I’d suggest a hiking boot.

First option, occasional hike. Not trying to dirty up stuff I already have.

Looking forward to a trip to Santafe in May next year. Plan on doing some good hiking. Anyone been?

If you’re looking to stay with Nike, I personally really like the Zegama and the Pegasus trail GTX4. I have the first version of the zegama, and it is a very plush ride with a decent sole. The zegama 2 has a vibram sole, which means it’s a much stickier rubber that is superior to the non-zegama soled shoes. (Nike has tried to make their own sticky rubber, but it’s not up to the vibram standard.). I’ve had the wild horse and kigers, which I think aren’t as good as the newest trail shoes. I also have the ultrafly, which is pretty nice but it’s got a bit of a wider toebox. It lacks the support for the really long hikes/runs though in my opinion.

The good thing about the Nike line in general is it can be great casually and on the trail. For the best all around in that category, I like my ultrafly and the peg trail. Just get some that you think would be good and give them a test drive. Nikes return policy is great for that.

Anyone been to Yosemite or done Half Dome before?

My girlfriend and I won backpacking permits for Yosemite to Half Dome for two nights in May, so ridiculously excited. Originally we were gonna go into Arizona and then drive out to Yosemite after a few days, but now considering trying to hit more of the Pacific Northwest instead of AZ. Gotta figure out all the logistics lol.
