Pirates give up on Duke, LaRoche, Young
PITTSBURGH (AP) -The Pittsburgh Pirates won't offer contracts to left-hander Zach Duke and infielders Andy LaRoche and Delwyn Young, designating them for assignment in moves that effectively make them free agents.

The Pirates chose to create roster space for other players in advance of the Rule 5 draft next month.

Pittsburgh made a similar move last winter with closer Matt Capps, who went on to be one of the majors' top relievers for Washington and Minnesota.

By not tendering them contracts, the Pirates are giving up on Duke, their former staff ace, and LaRoche, their former starting third baseman who was considered a key to the Jason Bay trade two years ago.

All three were arbitration-eligible.

The 27-year-old Duke was 8-2 with a 1.81 ERA as a rookie in 2005, but hasn't been fewer than five games below .500 since then. He was 8-15 with a 5.72 ERA last season as the Pirates lost 105 games. Before that, he was 11-16, 5-14, 3-8 and 10-15, with an ERA of at least 4.06 each season.

LaRoche was the Pirates' starting third baseman in 2009, batting .258 with 12 homers and 64 RBIs. He lost his job to rookie Pedro Alvarez last season while hitting .206 with four homers and 16 RBIs in 247 at-bats, mostly as a bench player. He hit .152 in 2008.

LaRoche, 27, and minor league pitcher Bryan Morris were considered the key players acquired by Pittsburgh in the three-team trade that sent Bay to the Red Sox and Manny Ramirez to the Dodgers. Morris has yet to pitch for the Pirates.

Young, a bench player, hit .236 with seven homers and 28 RBIs in 191 at-bats. One of his season highlights was becoming the first major league player to homer off Nationals rookie Stephen Strasburg.

The moves with Duke and LaRoche weren't a surprise, as it was evident late in the season that neither fit in the Pirates' long-term plans. The team estimated it would cost at least $6 million to re-sign Duke for 2011.

The Pirates added right-handers Michael Crotta, Jeff Locke, Kyle McPherson and Tony Watson and left-hander Daniel Moskos to their 40-man roster.

Sign Duke and LaRoche

He's not a bad glove to have on the bench.
EDIT:

Totally forgot about peewee, throw him on the bench too

We should sign all 3 of them.

Duke could be the 5th starter

LaRoche to see if he could somehow regain what he had. His 2009 was better than Casey Blake's 2010. Not saying much, but he'd be cheap and we have absolutely nothing at third base.

Pee Wee would be a good utility guy and pinch hitter. Had an OPS over .700 the past two years, and we've carried plenty of guys for both of those seasons who were much much worse and don't have the versatility of Young.
Colletti On Martin, Bullpen, Payroll, Crawford
By Mark Polishuk [November 19 at 5:35pm CST]

Dodgers GM Ned Colletti discussed some of his team's offseason planswith Jim Bowden on MLB Network Radio's "Inside Pitch" this afternoon. Bowden passed along some of Colletti's more pertinent comments viaTwitter...
Would love to have Martin back for 2 years under $8 Million.

We should bring back Saito for a year on a couple million, and give the last spot in the pen to someone in the system.

Frank and Jamie McCourt officially divorced -- but court case goes on
November 23, 2010 | 10:49 am

Frank and Jamie McCourt are officially divorced, even though their divorce proceedings could last several more years.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Scott Gordon granted a request to change the McCourts' marital status from separated to divorced, according to court documents.

The status change has no impact on the proceedings. Any assets determined to be community property would be considered as shared assets through the date of the separation -- July 7, 2009 -- rather than the date of the divorce.

Lynn Soodik, a family law attorney in Santa Monica, said a status change is not uncommon, even as parties work their way through lengthy divorce proceedings. Soodik, speaking generally, said an official divorce decree would allow a party to get remarried or to file in a lower tax bracket.

The McCourts married in 1979. They filed for divorce 13 months ago.

The McCourts have until the end of this month to accept or reject a mediator's proposed settlement. If the proposal is rejected, as expected, then Gordon has until Dec. 28 to rule on the validity of a marital agreement that would give Frank sole control of the Dodgers. Jamie has asked Gordon to throw out that agreement, which could make the team community property.

Either side could appeal Gordon's ruling, and Frank has promised to try another legal strategy to secure sole ownership if Gordon rules for Jamie.

Podsednik could go kick rocks.  I wouldn't mind Padilla or Barajas back, but I don't think they deserve a raise.  Padilla will be a good back of the rotation option and Barajas as a backup catcher.

Mariners Sign Charlie Haeger, Three Others
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [November 24 at 2:06pm CST]
Mariners signed knuckleballer Charlie Haeger, left-hander Fabio Castro, infielder Luis Rodriguez and right-hander Chris Smith, the team announced today. All four receive invitations to big league Spring Training.

Haeger, 27, appeared in nine games for the Dodgers this year. He struck out 30 batters in 30 innings, but walked 26 and posted an 8.40 ERA. He has generated strikeouts throughout his five-year MLB career, but has walked 6.4 batters per inning.

Yeah, I guess the Dodgers were the team the Giants had to match to keep Huff.

I really hope he was just trying to up the price.

1 year $5 million w/option for 2012, I will take it.

Kershaw
Kuroda
Billingsley
Lilly

That's not a bad rotation.

We still need a bat.

It's kinda nice not having to have an ongoing discussion about the revolving door in the offseason for once

Once again, what is going to be your downfall is the lack of an ace.

Please feel free to look at what Clayton Kershaw is becoming, and come back to this thread.
