First time I visited, I would have sworn it was the setting of a zombie movie. As soon as we got off the highway there was an old abandoned car shop with graffiti ALL over it, burned down houses, etc.

Gary is like a Preview of whats to come with Detroit.

Yeah, I think that's where my aunt's family be at now. Idk for sure though.

The Andersons are from my dads side. Your dad/mom would have probably known them instead of you. They used to run around the city doing stupid @*@%. Back when you had to have a fist fight with a ninja before yall could be friends.

Jo, Vern, Shawn, Dennis, and Frank, incase you wanted to ask. From what I'm told, between all of them they new pretty much everyone who went to HS in Gary.

Honestly, as reckless as it is in Chicago, it is just as bad (or worse) in other cities, it's just that Chicago is so much larger and prominent than the others that it gives it a higher profile.

For example, St. Louis is, pound-for-pound, a much more violent city than Chicago.  There is no proverbial "Northside" in St. Louis like there is in the Chi that serves as an escape from the madness of the rest of the city.  In St. Louis the Northside is dangerous, the Westside is extremely dangerous, the Southside is mostly very dangerous (although this is the part of the city with a couple very nice areas), and the Eastside is... well... East St. Louis (enough said).

So to all the people from D.C., Detroit, Flint, etc. I wouldn't be so quick to put Chicago in a separate, more dangerous category, because it really shouldn't be categorized like that.

chicago is a tough city regardless of whether you're in a gang or not.

take your a-- to sleep

Dude telling me go to sleep. Are you even from Chicago?

On the other note, people who get killed accidently like kids, people walking by, or what have you, that obviously has everything to do with being at the wrong place at the wrong time. That has nothing to do with whether those little kids, moms, dads or whatever were involved in some sort of gang. So you need to chill with your hurting $$@ stats that you decided to google for bout 15 min to make yourself look like you know things.

I wont deny that Chicago has a high murder rate, but MOST of those are from gang violence and something along that nature.

Nobody just %%%%**+ walks outside, sees a mom with kids and shoots them. Yall make it seem as if nobody is safe out here.

Like I said, if you are not affiliated with gangs or hang with thugs, you have nothing to worry about.

This dude Jimmy talking like he knows. Come on man, from the sound of things, you prob. aint from Chicago.

I been walked up to bunch of times by thugs asking if i bang, if you say no, dudes just keep it moving.

Now......take you're $$@ to sleep.
i'm not from Chicago, which i stated on the first page of the thread. i do live in Chicago. i did google all that stuff.  but i knew about it from reading the local papers (Redeye, Tribune, Chicago Reader, etc).  regardless of whether i googled it or not, it's relevant.  how many other cities are asking for the national guard to patrol the streets?

last i checked, being accidentally killed from a walk-by/drive by still makes a person a victim of a crime.  DC's question was about crime in general in this city; he didn't ask how bad are the gang-related crimes.

i'll fall back from my position of telling you to go to sleep, cause it was a little disrespectful.
laugh.gif
but if you're trying to act like crime isn't bad here, when other ppl in this thread who are from Chicago say otherwise, statistics say otherwise, recent surveys say otherwise, newspaper reports say otherwise, and Head Crook Mayor Daley is arguing that gun control is necessary because of the crime environment, i can't really say anything to you, cause you're living in a different reality.

No worries boss, I didnt take anything you said as disrespect. And I never said "crime isn't bad" out here. All I was trying to say is, most of this bad *!$% happening is from gang members going at it with each other or with people they had beef with. Stuff MOSTLY happens to people who are involved in gangs and along that nature.

As far as dude who was talking bout his car being vandalized, house broken into and all that stuff, thats just those thugs trying to make money and what not. Its very unfortunate. Its really bad in the southside and west. Its a damn shame.

Most tourists stay a few blocks away from Capitol Hill. He definitely wasn't out there by Barry Farm.

chicago is soft, come to ny if you want to witness something

I'm from New York and it doesn't get it in like that anymore. With all of the gentrification going on, the police presence has become a lot stronger in the once bad neighborhoods. There's still certain parts of the city (most of the Bronx, Bushwick, Brownsville, parts of the Stuy) where you don't want to get caught after dark but I don't think any major metropolitan city is seeing Chicago when it comes to crime.

I've lived in Chicago almost all my life, it's a great city and I love it, but why are some of you guys are acting like it's a war zone out here? It's not like that at all.
It's not bad at all if your in the right places. And if you're smart about what you do, then you'll be fine.
Those shootings only happen in the bad areas, where there are blue lights, almost never in places where there are tourists/middle class people.
If you guys want to visit/live here, it's a great place, you guys shouldn't be scared.
Like there are HIPSTERS living and wandering all over the city, and if they aren't scared, I'm pretty sure you guys shouldn't be scared either haha.
And I don't see why any of you guys would step into these high crime areas, unless you live there of course.

But to speak upon the matter, in the bad areas, crime is getting worse.
On average one to two people get murdered per day in these areas.
And the Chicago police recently made a statement saying how crime rates are lowering... $$*
The recent stories are also real disheartening, like that young teenager getting shot 22 times in the chest.
smh.gif
that !!*$@ !!+@*% up.
Or a few months ago, a teenager stepped on a guys lawn, the dude got pissed and shot and killed the teenager. And there's also that Bucktown beating.

The city of Chicago is also gentrifying the area, but that isn't really helping too much.
They kick out the lower class people, make nice upper-middle class apartments, in which suburban folks move in, only to push the lower class people further towards the more dangerous parts and then into the suburbs.
The city even installed cameras on every street corner, but seeing as the shootings only get worse, it's not helping.
The Illinois government really needs to focus on this matter, rather than #+@!%$+ road constructions. #+@!%$+ hate driving sometimes, half-!%% workers take a god damn lifetime to fix a street.
