Yeah, that area is super nice! Unfortunately that's a false representation of most of Chicago. Where you were is right in the heart of downtown, the main tourist attraction area.
To actually live in that area costs a fortune so most people that live there are very well off. Therefore crime is SUPER low; almost nonexistent.

Like some of the previous posters from Chicago have said, take a trip to the west side, or the south side... Then tell us how nice it is.

I was born and raised on the south side of Chicago. I came up with nothing but gangs/crime all around me... I grew up not being able to get certain clothes/shoes because of their colors, taking my hat off or straightening it according to what block I'm on, running from shots and all that...I've seen robberies, shootings, beatings, etc. so much that I'm almost

completely desensitized. Everyday on the local news it's nothing but death and what's extra messed up is, most of it is done by teens/young people. It seems as if young adults have

absolutely no value for life, no worries of going to prison, and actually take pride in it.

Just the other weekend 9 people got shot on 79th and western in broad daylight. More recently a kid got shot 22 times in front of his house, 22 times... by ONE gunman over nothing.

Hell, I've had my house broken into 5 times in the last year, my garage 2 times,  3 cars vandalized, 2 bullets fly through my window (living room/bedroom) and I've witnessed 3 robberies on my block.

Luckily, I've never gotten caught up in any crime/gangs and have never done any drugs or anything... All through high school and college I've never even been in a fistfight but I'll tell you first hand that living a straight edge life (and not being a complete loner) is hard work.

I could go on forever, but what I'm trying to get across is that the crime here is VERY SERIOUS and it seriously needs to stop. There's nothing cool about it.

I love Chicago. The nice areas are super nice and unlike any other city but the bad areas are BAD and getting worse

This is the most accurate statement in the entire thread....

chicago is a tough city regardless of whether you're in a gang or not.

take your a-- to sleep

Dude telling me go to sleep. Are you even from Chicago?

On the other note, people who get killed accidently like kids, people walking by, or what have you, that obviously has everything to do with being at the wrong place at the wrong time. That has nothing to do with whether those little kids, moms, dads or whatever were involved in some sort of gang. So you need to chill with your hurting $$@ stats that you decided to google for bout 15 min to make yourself look like you know things.

I wont deny that Chicago has a high murder rate, but MOST of those are from gang violence and something along that nature.

Nobody just %%%%**+ walks outside, sees a mom with kids and shoots them. Yall make it seem as if nobody is safe out here.

Like I said, if you are not affiliated with gangs or hang with thugs, you have nothing to worry about.

This dude Jimmy talking like he knows. Come on man, from the sound of things, you prob. aint from Chicago.

I been walked up to bunch of times by thugs asking if i bang, if you say no, dudes just keep it moving.

Now......take you're $$@ to sleep.
i'm not from Chicago, which i stated on the first page of the thread. i do live in Chicago. i did google all that stuff.  but i knew about it from reading the local papers (Redeye, Tribune, Chicago Reader, etc).  regardless of whether i googled it or not, it's relevant.  how many other cities are asking for the national guard to patrol the streets?

last i checked, being accidentally killed from a walk-by/drive by still makes a person a victim of a crime.  DC's question was about crime in general in this city; he didn't ask how bad are the gang-related crimes.

i'll fall back from my position of telling you to go to sleep, cause it was a little disrespectful.
laugh.gif
but if you're trying to act like crime isn't bad here, when other ppl in this thread who are from Chicago say otherwise, statistics say otherwise, recent surveys say otherwise, newspaper reports say otherwise, and Head Crook Mayor Daley is arguing that gun control is necessary because of the crime environment, i can't really say anything to you, cause you're living in a different reality.

You're also forgetting the people who are friends/family of those in gangs. You say as long as you aren't involved, you're safe. That's wrong, even here in mpls. Dudes who have never seen you with your fam/friend will come after you if they can't find who they're looking for. Someone slips up and says "Yo, so and so is X's homie. He's gonna give us the money X owes, or he's gonna be laying in a casket next to him."

And innocent people get shot/beat all the time, fam. Granted, people getting jumped are usually flossing in the wrong part of town with no respect, but still. You remember last initiation, right? I'm not even from the Chi, but I heard about that.
smh.gif

I'm not saying that you're wrong or anything, because I recognize that you're from there, but don't act like it's only on accident that people who aren't in gangs get popped.

I agree and I think this goes for most big cities also.  Of course every now and then innocent people going to get hit but I do agree with dudes statement.

It's nothing to be proud of. That's an egregious quality that I wouldn't want my city to be so heavily associated with. Besides, Capone was a fool. I hate people who sell drugs, and Capone is no exception.

First time I visited, I would have sworn it was the setting of a zombie movie. As soon as we got off the highway there was an old abandoned car shop with graffiti ALL over it, burned down houses, etc.

Gary is like a Preview of whats to come with Detroit.
