Because they'll pay you absurd amounts of money.

Just read that article, Peppers franchise tag assures him of almost $17 million should he accept it. That's alot of dough, the kind of dough players lookfor in signing bonuses. Wonder what kind of deal he is expecting on the open market.
A CHANGE OF HEART FOR ANQUAN
Not long ago, Cardinals receiver Anquan Boldin made clear his desire to leave the team. He told his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, to inform the franchise that he would not accept a new contract, and that he wanted only to be traded.

Since then, Boldin has had a dramatic change of heart.

Per a league source, Boldin has informed the Cardinals that he will entertain a contract extension.

We're told that Boldin is looking for a fair deal, in light of the current market. Though no specific numbers have emerged, the Cardinals set the high-water mark last March, giving a four-year, $40 million deal to receiver Larry Fitzgerald.

Other receivers, such as Randy Moss of the Patriots, have contracts that pay at a rate of $9 million annually.

The question becomes whether the Cardinals will invest high-end money into a pair of two high-end pass-catchers. The Lions decided against such an approach last year, trading Roy Williams to the Cowboys in lieu of paying him like Calvin Johnson.

The Cowboys, in turn, paired Williams with Terrell Owens.

In our view, it was smart for Boldin to soften his stance. As a practical matter, he could say or do nothing to force a trade. If the Cardinals are going to decide to move him, they need to come to that conclusion without Boldin jumping up and down about how he wants an Oompa Loompa now. (Yeah, we stole that one from Rome. It's technically an homage. Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

In the end, the Cardinals might decide that trading Boldin is the best move the franchise can make. By opening his mind to all options, Boldin necessarily has removed one of the potential impediments to such an outcome.
Local star Bryant McFadden should hit free agency: Dolphins interested?
Omar Kelly |South Florida Sun-Sentinel 1:03 PM EST, February 19, 2009
Winning an NFL championship just doesn't breed envy. It also fuels coveting from other NFL teams.

That's the situation the Steelers are presently facing heading into free agency, and McArthur High product Bryant McFadden could be positively impacted by his team's success. At least his wallet could.

The cornerback's services will be in demand when/if he hits the open market, and there is concern in Pittsburgh that his salary requests could put him in another jersey next season.

If a deal isn't struck by Feb. 27, McFadden will be free to field offers from the rest of the NFL, and the Dolphins could be interested in bringing this South Floridian home.

"My first option is going back to the Steelers, but I'm looking for a nice little check," said McFadden, a former Florida State standout who was selected in the second-round of the 2005 draft.

Kevin Colbert, the Steelers director of football operations said the team's still talking to their 18 free agents, which includes their top four offensive linemen, hammering out more details in the negotiations. Pittsburgh is roughly $18 million under the 2009 salary cap.

Colbert admitted Pittsburgh's top priority is re-working James Harrison's contract, ensuring that the 2008 Defensive Player of the Year finishes his career in Pittsburgh. Addressing the offensive linemen comes next.

But where does that leave McFadden, who has started 18 games over the past four seasons, averaging 34 tackles per year, and intercepting seven passes in his career?

"He is a priority, but we're not going to be able to keep this whole team together. We will continue to negotiate with all our free agents, and what comes together comes together," Colbert said.

"It only takes one team to accelerate the price. It doesn't take a great market [at the position]," Colbert said. "But if one team has a sincere interest and you're not able to match that you're probably going to lose that player."

its crazy i remember playing ncaa back when mcfadden was a freshman and i got all the player names downloaded to my fsu squad ... i had mcfadden returningkicks and punts and leading the league in INT's ... dude came close to winning the heisman i think lol ...

Mcfadden is pretty good but not worth the Steelers breaking the bank if he gets other offers. Starks franchised for Pitt
Dolphins sign Vernon Carey
by Edgar Thompson
The Dolphins have locked up right tackle Vernon Carey to a multi-year deal, two NFL sources said today at the scouting combine.

The move solidifies the tackle position for the team for the next several years, pairing Carey, 27, with left tackle Jake Long, who started 16 games and played in the Pro Bowl as a rookie in 2008.

The team's first-round pick in 2004, Carey, 27, has started 59 straight games for the Dolphins.

The deal comes a day after the Dolphins opted not to place the franchise tag on Carey, which would have locked him up for one year for $8.45 million.

Also Thursday, Carolina signed All-Pro right tackle Jordan Gross to a six-year deal worth a reported $30.5 million during the first three years.

The details of Carey's contract were not made available.

The Dolphins still have four 2008 starters who would become free agents if unsigned by midnight next Friday - safety Yeremiah Bell, linebacker Channing Crowder, cornerback Andre Goodman and safety Renaldo Hill.

Despite an impasse in negotiations, Crowder, who with 114 tackles was second to Bell (120) last season, still has a chance to return, an NFL source said, estimating the chances to be "30 percent."

Kurt Warner likely to continue playing

"Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner, who contemplated retirement in the weeks after Super Bowl XLIII, likely will continue playing, he said on Friday.

"I am leaning in that direction," Warner said via text message. "Not sure I have made a definitive decision yet."

Earlier Friday, Warner's agent, Mark Bartelstein, said he client "wants to play, for sure."

Warner said last summer that he planned to play two more years after the 2008 season, but in recent months left open the possibility of retiring.

As the club made its run in the playoffs, Warner said he would weigh several factors in making the decision, including health, family considerations and the Cardinals' plan for building upon the success of the 2008 season.

Ultimately, he said, he would pray about the situation and then make a decision.

Cardinals officials have expected Warner, 37, to return all along, as has Bartelstein. Warner's contract expired after this season and he's due to become an unrestricted agent Feb. 27."

The New York Jets intend to release receiver Laveranues Coles, an NFL source told ESPN.com.

Money is the driving force behind the club's decision to cut Coles, who has been dissatisfied with the Jets for a number of reasons within the pastyear. He's entering the final season of his contract and is on the books for $6 million guaranteed in 2009.

Coles has spent seven of his nine NFL seasons with the Jets, and is fourth on the team's all-time list with 459 receptions. He had 70 catches for 850yards and a team-high seven touchdowns last season.

He led the Jets in receptions four times and finished one catch behind JerrichoCotchery last season.
