Sources: Titans, Haynesworth far apart after initial contract offer

Nashville City Paper

"The Tennessee Titans and the representatives for Albert Haynesworth are far apart in terms of the dollar value of a new contract, according to sources familiar with the situation.

After the two sides spoke in late January, the Titans have now made an initial offer to Haynesworth, but the sides apparently are not at all close in terms of what each is seeking in a new contract extension for the defensive tackle.

Haynesworth, who can become a free agent on Feb. 27, played last season under the franchise tender of $7.25 million and met incentives worked into the deal in order to reach free agency this year.

Haynesworth, who had a career-high 8.5 sacks in 2008 and was named All-Pro for the second consecutive season, is in Hawaii for the Pro Bowl this week, in what could be his final act as a Titan, unless the two sides can somehow bridge the cap over the next three-and-a-half weeks.

Haynesworth's agent Chad Speck could not be reached for comment, and the Titans have not commented on the negotiations since coach Jeff Fisher indicated that re-signing Haynesworth was a "priority" of the offseason proceedings in his season-ending news conference.

Haynesworth is believed to be seeking a contract that would make him the NFL's highest-paid defensive player in terms of guaranteed money. Currently, defensive end Jared Allen of the Minnesota Vikings holds that honor with a contract that guarantees him in the neighborhood of $32 million."

someone take TO off our hands ... get roy outta here with as little cap ramifications as possible ... let canty walk ... sign haynesworth and ray lewis ...move ratliff to d end ... sign pacman and trade for boldin or TJ

i mean i can dream ...
EDGERRIN JAMES ALREADY GONE IN ARIZONA
Posted by Mike Florio on February 5, 2009, 11:41 a.m. EST

In an interview on Dan Patrick's radio show, Dan Bickley of the Arizona Republic and XTRA Sports 910 said in no uncertain terms that Cardinals running back Edgerrin James is already gone.

Bickley said that James didn't return to Arizona with the team, and that he fully expects James not to be back in 2009.

James is entering the final year of his contract, at a base salary of $5 million.

By cutting him, the Cardinals would create $5 million in 2009 cap space - which would push their bulge under the spending limit to at least $47 million.

James currently is 11th on the all-time rushing list, with 12,121 yards. He trails Marcus Allen by 122 yards, and Jim Brown by only 191 yards.

Tim Hightower presumably will be the starting running back in 2009; backup J.J. Arrington is due to become an unrestricted free agent.

If Shady is still on the board when the Cards pick they better take him. Hightower is

Ray Lewis calls Jets an 'attractive option'

Posted: February 6, 2009

Sporting News staff reports

Linebacker Ray Lewis, an unrestricted free agent this offseason, told NFL Network Thursday that the New York Jets are an "attractive option," as playing for the team would mean he'd be reunited with Rex Ryan, the former Ravens defensive coordinator who is now head coach of the Jets, the New York Post reports.

"You can take a young Jets team that has a lot of talent across the board when you try to wiggle (No.) 52 into that equation somewhere or other than that team goes from just being OK to, let's just win this," Lewis said. "That scenario by itself is always attractive. That's a great opportunity, reason being we (he and Ryan) have been together for years."

Lewis said that he has not spoken to Ryan since he became the Jets' coach.

Lewis' fellow Ravens linebackers, Terrell Suggs and Bart Scott, are also unrestricted free agents. Suggs has said that he believes the three will be willing to give the Ravens "hometown discounts" in order to stay in Baltimore and keep the linebacking unit together.

But Lewis told NFL Network he would not give Baltimore a hometown discount. "If you don't play less, you don't take less. That's just life," Lewis said.

Lewis went so far as to hint that Brett Favre returning would be a factor in whether he decides to sign with the Jets, according to the Post, since it would indicate the Jets are in a win-now mode.

"That scenario you almost have to see where it goes to see what they're doing as an organization," Lewis said. "Then that's when you can jump in and pick up where they're going to leave off. If they're saying we are going to go after Brett, then that's when I am going to make a phone call."
Stubblefield provides names in federal steroids case
Dana Stubblefield, a four-time Pro Bowl lineman who spent 11 seasons in the NFL, has been providing information to federal authorities and the league regarding steroid use and distribution in the sport, according to a government filing.

Stubblefield, who last played in 2003, was sentenced in federal court Friday to two years' probation for lying to investigators during testimony in the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative steroids case. A former defensive lineman for the San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders and Washington ********, he pleaded guilty last year to lying about his use of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs and avoided jail time in part for his cooperation in the investigation. U.S. District Judge Susan Illston said the sentence was warranted because Stubblefield was "extremely cooperative" with investigators after he was charged in January 2008. She also fined the 1997 defensive player of the year $5,000.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello declined comment to The Associated Press. Stubblefield declined the judge's invitation to say something before he was sentenced, and didn't comment outside court.

In a sentencing memorandum filed Thursday, the government wrote that as part of his plea deal, Stubblefield had provided "the names of players, trainers, and others associated with the NFL who may be involved in ongoing activities with illegal drugs in professional football."
Cardinals fire defensive coordinator Pendergast
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP)-The Arizona Cardinals have fired defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast less than a week after the team played Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt said in a statement released Saturday that the decision "comes down to what's best for the team and what gives us the best chance to win."

Pendergast's departure leaves the team without both coordinators. Offensive coordinator Todd Haley was named head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday.

Pendergast was hired by Dennis Green in 2004 and was retained when Whisenhunt took over in 2007.

Cassel to make $14.65M next season

Matt Cassel has accepted the New England Patriots' non-exclusive franchise tender, guaranteeing the quarterback at least $14.65 million next season, league sources told ESPN.

The next step is for the Patriots to send Cassel a contract. Cassel effectively will not be a free agent come Feb. 27 and will not be permitted to shop himself to other teams. The Patriots could still trade Cassel.

Cassel faxed his acceptance to the Patriots, the NFL and the NFLPA on Saturday. That means a $14.651 million salary for 2009 in guaranteed even though he has not signed a one-year contract yet. The franchise tag's value is the average of the top five salaries for NFL players at a particular position.

Cassel had a breakout season in 2008, starting 15 games after starting none the seven previous seasons -- four with Southern California as backup to Heisman Trophy winners Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart, and three after New England drafted him in the seventh round in 2005.

At the Senior Bowl last month, one veteran scout said the word was that the Rams were floating the names of Pace and Holt as available via trade for a third-round pick.

League sources told the Post-Dispatch that an NFL club - believed to be Tennessee - was offering a first-round pick for Holt before the trading deadline last fall. The Rams decided against making the trade, the source said.

IRVING - The decision was made last month, but the Cowboys will officially part ways with cornerback Adam Jones today, the first day teams are allowed to waive players for the 2009 season.
WARD UNDERGOES SHOULDER SURGERY
Posted by Aaron Wilson on February 10, 2009, 5:45 p.m.

Despite all the attention paid to Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward's sprained right knee prior to the Super Bowl, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that it's actually his shoulder that required a surgical repair.

Ward had a "clean up" procedure to his shoulder this week and will not require surgery for his sprained medial collateral ligament in his knee, a team source told Post-Gazette beat writer Ed Bouchette.

Ward started in the Super Bowl and helped the Steelers defeat the Arizona Cardinals with two receptions for 43 yards.

Unlike all the tumult surrounding Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, Ward tends to not make a big deal out of his injuries.
Green, Greenwood released by Texans
HOUSTON (AP)-Ahman Green and linebacker Morlon Greenwood were released by the Houston Texans on Tuesday.

Green was hailed as the solution to Houston's rushing woes when he was signed, but finished each of his two seasons with the Texans on the injured reserve. He leaves after rushing for 554 yards and missing 18 games with various injuries.

The 31-year-old four-time Pro Bowler started Houston's season opener but missed the next game with an injury. Rookie Steve Slaton filled in and when Green was healthy coach Gary Kubiak decided to stick with Slaton.

Slaton responded by rushing for a team-record 1,282 yards.

The move could signal the end of Green's 11-year career that began in Seattle and peaked in his seven seasons with the Green Bay Packers. He rushed for more than 1,100 yards in each of his first five seasons with the Packers before missing 11 games with an injury in 2005. Green rebounded to rush for 1,059 yards in 2006 before joining the Texans.

The 30-year-old Greenwood, who recorded more than 100 tackles in each of the previous four seasons, saw his production and playing time decrease this season as Houston relied on its' younger linebackers.

He started 10 games and finished with 45 tackles.

you serious?

Thought this was a good read.

The New York Jets' http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3898942Brett Favre experiment officially is over. With no shot at redemption in 2009, we permanently can label it an utter failure.

 Rich Kane/US Presswire

The Jets were 9-7 in 2008 with Brett Favre at quarterback.

Favre's stay lasted about five months, but left so much wreckage strewn in its wake.

Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum's daring Aug. 6 trade not only set them back, but also made an AFC East rival more competitive.

Here are some of the consequences of the decision to bring Favre aboard:
 • The Jets went 9-7, failing to make the playoffs despite committing $140 million to free agents such as Alan Faneca, Damien Woody, Tony Richardson and Calvin Pace and trading for Kris Jenkins.
 • Favre led the NFL with 22 interceptions and had a 79.3 second-half passer rating.
 • He threw two touchdowns and nine interceptions in the final five games. The Jets were 1-4 in those games and needed a miracle defensive play to beat the Buffalo Bills.
 • The Jets released Chad Pennington to make room for Favre. Pennington led the Dolphins to the AFC East championship after a 1-15 season in 2007. The Dolphins beat the Jets at the Meadowlands to clinch.
 • The Jets' late-season collapse cost several people their jobs. They fired Eric Mangini the day after the season finale. Mangini landed with the Cleveland Browns.
 • Adhering to superstition, Mangini in October named his newborn son after Favre. Maybe Wite-Out has been applied to the birth certificate.
 • Favre learned he suffered a torn biceps during the season and was playing hurt.

 NFL.com Video

Highlights of the best moments from quarterback Brett Favre in 2008.

• Favre created tension in the Jets' locker room. Running back Thomas Jones publicly said Favre should have been benched for his poor play late in the season. Safety Kerry Rhodes noted he would like Favre to come back only if he committed himself in the offseason.
 • The Jets lost a third-round draft pick in the trade with the Green Bay Packers.
Now it's over. Or is it?

Favre's presence will resonate into 2009 because of the massive changes it created. Tannenbaum, who made several positive moves, kept his job. But the Jets have a new coaching staff that may or may not work out, and a team that invested so much money into making the playoffs last year has to find another quarterback.

I just hope my Buffalo bills do some spending this off season. We need to go after Peppers and maybe boldin or T.J. whosyourmomma. We need another Wideoutcause hardy and reed aint cutting it. I would of also loved for them to fire that coach( not evn goin to mention his name cause he does deserve that much). Ifwe can get peppers him aron and stroud will bet a top 5 defensive line imo but this is all dreams cause i kno we wont do any of these things cause Wilson is acheap *#* old fart who wont even give his kids a dime when he dies smh

here's an article about the T.O./oakland rumors
COULD TERRELL OWENS WIND UP IN OAKLAND?
Posted by Aaron Wilson on February 10, 2009, 6:43 p.m.

With Dallas Cowboys controversial wide receiver Terrell Owens reportedly on thin ice in Valley Ranch, the NFL rumor mill is swirling about where Owens might wind up if Cowboys owner Jerry Jones ultimately decides to cut ties.

And the Oakland Raiders, who could use a deep threat for quarterback JaMarcus Russell, could be a potential destination for Owens if he's looking for a new employer, according to the Contra Costa Times.

"Of course it's a possibility," Times beat writer Steve Corkran said Tuesday during a live chat with Raiders fans. "Terrell Owens has Raider written all over him, and Al Davis is the kind of owner who would allow Owens to be the person he is as long as he produces in games."

In response to a query about whether the Raider Nation might be a landing spot for cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones and quarterback Michael Vick, Corkran didn't rule out the possibility.

"No way on Adam Jones - sorry, I refuse to refer to him by a video game character," Corkran writes. "As for Michael Vick, that's something that will tempt Al Davis more than people might imagine. Remember, coach Tom Cable has a history with Vick as well, and it's not all bad. Don't discount the possibility of Vick wearing a Raiders jersey one day, if not next season."

T.O.'s Future No Foregone Conclusion

Judging by a couple articles around the net this week, you would think it's just a matter of time before the Cowboys release receiver Terrell Owens.
But despite the fact the people who have said as much are pretty well connected around the league, it's still speculation at this point. Sports Illustrated's Peter King, who basically guaranteed Owens would be gone, said as much today on Michael Irvin's radio show (ESPN 103.3-FM), admitting he doesn't know what Jerry Jones will do, but figures the only logical conclusion the owner/GM can come to is to part ways with Owens.
That's not the attitude Jones seemed to have last week, when he was saying all the Cowboys locker room turmoil is a symptom of losing. The owner was pretty adamant about his feelings in that regard, and that's supposed to be the big reason to get rid of T.O., right?
As we've laid out here time and again, and you're surely aware by now, the decision whether to bring T.O. back or not is a doozy. Until we hear something different from Jones, it's awfully hard to predict.

So one minute he says Owens is def gone and now he admits he truly doesn't now?

LMAO @ the media. I want Owens gone now just so we can go 6-10. Then these clowns that think they know football can eat %!%@. Cowboys can be trash next year. They been disappointing since I was 9. I am now 23. What's one more year gonna hurt
