President to propose free community college on Friday

If there are fields that require degrees, then college is still necessary.

What's next you're going to say how Bill Gates didn't go to college and became a billionaire? :lol

...:|

You do know he's one of the most famous college dropouts right? This stupid comment only hurts your silly argument.

next you'll attempt to say that i'm implying you can/will become super wealthy without college

:rollin

How many college drop outs do you know personally that are billionaires? Matter fact millionaires?

See that blacked out text? You're ignorant and predictable. I'm done with you unless you have anything smart to say.

We shouldn't even send kids to High School, they learn everything "necessary" to be "successful" way before then.

Side note, I think the GPA requirements should be raised to 3.0 or 3.2, 2 yrs of community college is just taking Core Classes I would assume, and also I think the initiative should be limited to STEM Majors or people picking up a Trade, I`m sure I`ll get flack but what good is this when kids will just major in some stuff that we dont need like Mass Comm. I dont have kids so this doesn't impact me but I`m not really mad at it, I just hope They do something about Student Loans, I dont have much but I know it is a huge problem in General, where your recent grads dont do things like Buy a Car or Home because they have so much Student Loan debt and many of them work jobs that aren't related to their field so they can't even pay them off realistically, and maybe its me but when you are Single with no Kids there are literally no Tax breaks for you so you tend to get hardest with taxes that you in your head (maybe out of ignorance) dont even see a great benefit.

Man, I'm 19, single, no kids or write offs. Claiming 0 and I'm getting taxed at over 30% Trying to buy a property but jesus man.

It's pretty simple. They can offer anything they want. If YOU choose it, it's YOUR fault.

Worthless is worthless, if the data backs it up, it shouldn't be offered. Same is expected of you when your job no longer exists or gets outsourced. You need to be re-trained

It's pretty simple. They can offer anything they want. If YOU choose it, it's YOUR fault. Colleges don't guarantee jobs after graduation. Why would a college be blamed for a loan from a bank that the person decided not to pay? That doesn't even make a shred of sense whatsoever. You're straight up just looking for someone to blame for peoples personal choices.

So you're going to ingore the fact the student loan bubble, it's all lazy people who made "bad" choices? You wanna be conservatives are a joke with your ideology.

Who you telling, I claim 1, screw getting a refund its like giving the govt a tax free loan, I still get a little something back but they take too much when you claim 0. I could maybe claim 2 and break even or owe like a few hundred but dont want to risk it. I bought a house last yr, so hoping I get some love back from the IRS but who knows.

"If I agree to take out a loan for a worthless degree, can't find a job in the worthless career field to pay that loan, and then default on that loan it's the schools and governments fault and they should pay!"

Right, it's not like things like a economic crisis can happen. Or outsourcing. Let me guess the housing crisis happened because everyone was taking out loans they couldn't afford either....right. No bank fraud happened there, right.

Give me a break.

Idk how this year is going to look since I was making 12 an hour at my last job so I didn't want to owe at the end. Hopefully buying a house in a couple years.

So you're 19 in a construction field telling people it's easy to obtain a college degree without debt?

Good stuff Mr. Pres.

Not only will this encourage more people to further their education, it will KEEP people in the education system. How many people you know took out a ton of loans only to quit 2 years in at a major U with NOTHING to show for it other than debt they obviously cant repay?

I guarantee the percentage of 4 year grads goes up because of this. People will be more inclined to stick it out if they already have 2 years done for free.

I like the idea of community service hours helping to pay for it as well. No reason why you can't give back if you're getting school for free. I'd clean a city street in a heartbeat in order to get free school.

It's not easy. That is clear. If you want it, you can get it. Countless people in my family have done so.

**** that, how far you think 12hr gonna get you?

You must still be at home.

I lucked up @ 21 and got on with the railroad, but @ 29 I'm regretting not getting my degree and I'm slowly headed towards getting back in school by summer.

It's not as pretty as people make it seem without a degree although it can be done.

I find it funny when cats name all these Americans who became billionaires without a degree when most were Crooks or Geniuses, lol Folks act like Bill Gates didnt drop out of an IVY LEAGUE and trying to compare that to some cat looking into 2 yrs free at a community college LOL.

This isn't a endless money pot. The same opportunity awarded to you isn't available to everybody, stop being naive seriously. You do realize if you were able to go to college paying $50 it's because someone out there had to paid in full? Or do you just think about yourself? If everybody was going to school for $50 you'd be learning in a hut.

I'm not making 12 an hr anymore. That was my last job and I was claiming 2. I was referring to my tax situation.

At the end of the day what you supporters want to do is subsidize ignorance. It's been stated many times by many people in the thread, if you want to go college, you can. It ain hard. Anyone who can't figure that out just ain't look hard enough. No federal program is needed.

If this gives more people the incentive to go out and educate themselves w/o thinking to much farther beyond that I fail to see what's wrong with this proposition.

The only immediate problem I see is the complete devaluation of the associate's degree.

Like I said earlier though, with my Pell alone (eligible for almost full) I could easily go full time to the local CC's and get a 4-digit refund with no loans.

Those from lower earning families don't really need this. The money is there if people bothered to apply for it.

The incentive of going to college is furthering your education, getting a degree, and hopefully find a good job and not have to go through life struggling. If that isn't enough incentive for people then college isn't for you. How much more incentive do pepole need to want to better themselves? It's ridiculous.
