President to propose free community college on Friday

Agreed. The reason we have "for profit" schools popping up is because education at traditional universities is too damn expenive/exclusive, but as a country we still place an emphasis on it. For profit schools are sharks. There is a reason they play all that **** during the middle of the day for people who are out of work or are desperate.

Make education free ( and also make the cost of going to traditional schools afterwards) and the world will be a better place. Cutting the cost of schooling => people will follow their passions and not what pays the most because they need to pay those loans back => better society overall!

man the amount of commercials for these schools and programs they show(especially during Maury and them Judge shows)
Yeah they know what they are doing.

I watched this program a while back its a real eye opener

PBS Frontline program titled College Inc
http://video.pbs.org/video/1485280975/

When money is being wasted/used/abused on things it shouldn't, that's why people complain

i like this free education stuff...hes got my vote in the next election
I'm sure he will appreciate your vote in the upcoming election

I'll pass on free community college unless the government finds a way to give it to people who actually deserve it. That obviously won't happen because its unethical in the publics eyes to have the government choose who gets what/doesn't.

Who would you say "deserves" it?

College and Universities have become purely tools to squeeze money out of anyone trying to make something of themselves in life. I'm all for any initiatives to even the playing field a bit.

honestly education should be free to whoever wants to learn.

I understand education is a right everyone has, but some people aren't cut for post high school education. If you want to go for higher ed, the government should instill requirements you have to meet. I guess grades are one way to see who deserves it or not

More people need to learn a trade
Code/programming needs to be taught in every school across this nation from a young age
Learning how to trade stocks should be taught in junior high and high schools
Creative and critical thinking can't be thrust aside to appease standardized testing

There's a lot of issues on all levels right now.

The funny thing is that in a lot of places community colleges double at trade schools

Dude was ranting and raving about needing workers rebuild our infrastructure (which is be expensive also), but community colleges are the perfect place to teach more people how to weld, plumbing, how to be an electrician, etc...

How is that expensive? I'm in my first year of my apprenticeship and have only paid for tools. Don't expect to be paying much more for it either.

You can pick up a trade at a community college, but that doesn't equal a good living all of the time. It requires more than just knowing the trade.

The expensive part was referring to the rebuilding of the infrastructure.

You suggested with need to focus on rebuilding our infrastructure, and I'm saying community colleges are a great place to trade the workers we need to do that

And of courses learning a trade doesn't guarantee a good living, neither does a engineering degree for that matter. This is about giving people the tools to build a career/future for themselves

This proposed program isn't trying to guarantee the happiness, it is trying to help with the pursuit.

I meant more along the lines of Commercial buildings. The customer pays for that. Construction in general is supposed to grow 10% over the next few years.

I agree with you and I don't think this is necessarily a bad program, I just feel education reform focusing especially on the younger grades would be better.

Not excited about this at all.

It most certainly will devalue an associates degree as far as employment goes. If candidate A has a associates and candidate B has a HD degree. In most cases the guy with the HS degree will get curved. Now evertone will be walking around with an Associates so employers will have to find another way to weed people out. They'll start looking at strictly Bachelors.

Fast food places will start requiring Associates. They only positive I see is some people will be exposed to higher education and perhaps be encouraged to keep at it. But eh, I'll wait until Friday to hear the fulast proposal.
lets step back and look at this. Community college is already cheap anyway and any and every body can afford it off student finacial aid which covers most of it and/or minor student loan of 2k or so

So in reality its not going to change anything. the people who already was going to go school we go for free, the ones that never went or dont plan to go will still be the same

Nothing will change, except the people who already planned to go anyways it will be free

The most important thing to remember about conservatives is that they want America to go back to 1850. Remember that number and date. How ever America was circa 1850 is the ultimate conservative blueprint for America. In addition to slavery, child abuse, diarrhea based terminal diseases and decade long economic downturns, conservatives believe that only the very richest people should go to college.

I suppose our current system is not much better. Basically, we believe that unless mom and dad can cough up 60k per year for at least six years (one thing moderate Democrats and Republicans can agree upon is that you need a masters degree if you want to be genuinely middle class) and that you must study a skill that is "in demand" amongst employers. The problem is that demand changes every single year. We are asking 18 year olds to take on mini mortgages and they, along with the State and possibly their parents, must assume all of the risks of choosing incorrectly. The game is rigged and yet we have a bunch of dumb bros who think that if anything, the system is too generous and that it sides too much with students and families. I know actual labor economists who cannot predict the labor market five years hence but recent high school grads are just supposed to know what employers will want in five years's time?

Cut the military budget and I'm fine with it but **** a tax hike. No. Just no.

I agree, not everybody is cut for higher education. But also, I know a **** ton of people who went to CC for years, and didn't even get an AA or transfer. It seemed that it was just something their parents wanted (as far as going to college) or they were bored and say f it, I'll go to CC.

Should there be a charge of you drop out? If you don't graduate? Don't transfer?

I even know a couple people who were getting 2500-3000 a semester in cash from the school because their parents were "low income" but would drop their classes after a certain date after they got their cash

Already free for me with extras if I had decided to go that route.

Understand the gravity of the policy though. This could be big, for the better.

Obama is pulling out all the half-court shots the remainder of his term

Man and campuses are already full as it is. When I was at CC finding parking was a *****. Had to get there a half hour early just to get to class on time.

And classrooms were so full that sometimes folks who got there late had to sit on the floor.

**** this whole idea. Get a job, and pay for credit hours. CC isn't that expensive. ****** can cop Jordans and have a iPhone 6+, drink and party every weekend but can't pay for community college?

FOHWTBS. I'm open to it being free for inner city kids who truly come from impoverished backgrounds. But not for everyone.

you obviously didn't read the first paragraph of the article. free tuition for those "who maintain good grades"

Is Rico x trolling haven't been able yo distinguish.. I apologize if he isn't...
But I hope to clear up the "FAFSA" payback thing..
FAFSA is the equal of an archive of resources to pay for school..
FAFSA offers pell grants(typically free),loans(subsidized&unsubsidized)(yo have to pay these back).
I recieved FAFSA in form of a pell grant at my community college for nursing school(never had to pay a dime back), it covered books/supplies and I still had cash left over..
Another form of FAFSA Is WIA(workforce investment agency) they pay for your school if youre working in the field already and want to obtain an higher degree pertaining to your field..
