If this passes, might have to change plans

If we stop so much war and military spending, maybe we could actually have some tax dollars left over for our people.

If you can't get an education right now, it's because your lazy. There's FAFSA, scholarships, Loans ( :lol )

:{ sorry you feel this way, ask a person who comes with a middle class home if they are lazy .. or if they were considered too rich to qualify for grants but they are too poor to pay for college out of pocket

I'm curious as to what effect this will have. For one, will my taxes increase? If so, by how much? This would just be something that I or anybody in my family will never use.

My next concern is, what will this really do? If more people have associates degrees, employers will have more people to choose from. If one person is willing to do the job for 50, the next will come by and do it for 40 and so on. As it is, a college degree doesn't mean a damn thing. I see people with BS degrees in all sorts of stuff working at banks or some kind of restaurant and it amazes me.

If you can't get an education right now, it's because your lazy. There's FAFSA, scholarships, Loans ( :lol ) During the short amount of time I went to school I paid like $42 for classes at a community college. People that have no business being in school get into community college, many of those same people shouldn't be graduating high school. That's a damn joke for all the real scholars.

Back in the day, if you graduated high school it was because you we're actually at the top of your class. You didn't half *** your way through, go to a community college and get a degree in theater to get some BS job making 50K a year. You went to a university to become an engineer, teacher, etc.

I'll tell you guys right now from personal experience, many of my friends had no reason to graduate high school. I slept through a good 40% of high school and graduated with decent grades and passing all of my AP tests. High school is too damn easy as it is.

You wanna know what will really make a difference? Education reform.
Let's change the way our school system fails kids at a young age. Let's stop forecasting what our prison population will look like in years to come according to grade school reading levels. This will make people more intelligent and allow them to further themselves in their later years when they have the option of going to college after graduating high school.

WHY ARE WE PUSHING FOR THIS WHEN OUR COUNTRY HAS A SHORTAGE OF SKILLED LABOR TO REBUILD OUR INFRASTRUCTURE?!
this post was :x all the way around.

From start to finish

If you end up in 50K debt then I'd hope you majored in something that will allow you to pay that back and still live. If you decide to go to Harvard and get a bachelor's in psychology. You deserve your debt because that's a waste of money. It's all about the decisions you make. I refuse to be forced to subsidize them.

The skilled labor thing is actually a decent argument. I think more people should get into the trades and unions and that art is being lost today. We also need more creativity and innovation. More people embracing failure to develop new avenues of profit.

It is ridiculously easy to get a FASFA loan. You apply and boom. If you're poor, you can get a loan. If you're too rich to for a grant you can get a loan. The **** ain hard at all.

more people learning to start businesses rather than learning to become a manager

Good kernel of an idea that needs a lot of thought on the best way to implement it. Health and education systems in America need serious changes. But there will be influential people who advocate against it.

I also think we need to realize that not everyone needs to trditional college. You can go to trade school and make a lot if money.

Student loans are the worst thing to be placed on the shoulders of today's youth in this economy. I wish those on no one.
The only ones to blame are those who accept those loan terms. What ever happened to personal responsibility?

Blaming the banks for the loan YOU agreed to. Come on.

You're advocating a 18 year old having a 30K? Ok

Although this post may seem harsh, I do agree with it. A major problem with many students in college today is that they take on majors that dont have ROI. I feel there are about a handful of majors offered that you NEED to have a degree to practice. A lot of majors (art,music,etc..) either dont have good ROI or you simply dont need a degree (and spend thousands) to practice.

im 18, I can't afford 20 grand a year to get the chance to get a job, who's to blame? It's my fault I have to turn to extortion to take the chance I get this grand education that's become a necessity to make a living in this country? The entire process is broken.

I'd put more blame on lack of interest in community colleges. The current model is graduate HS and go to a four year. People don't pay enough attention to community colleges. I did my two year work here,, saved a lot of money, and I won't have to take a huge loan when I transfer to a UC. Tuition at UCLA is about 11,000 a year I believe for a transfer student. I work on call, and I can afford to pay most of that myself, so I won't have to spend 5+ years to pay off $40,000 or more.

It's not harsh it's sad that people have to choose between doing something they actually are interested in vs something lucrative. That whole "I don't like what I do but it pays the bill" life isn't what I'm trying to live or what I would tell my children to do. I guess people are cool with being miserable as long as their rent is paid.

Good stuff. This is why I like this I initiative Barry's doing. More people can go that route, work for two years, go to a CC and then finish their degree elsewhere saving some money.

I won't deny that college education is a scam, but no one puts a gun to your head to take out loans.

I don't feel bad for anyone that can't pay for a loan that they agreed to.

Sounds like my family. I fell into that which is why I went to a community college. I paid $42 out of pocket and my old man paid for my books. I hated school so I dropped out and I picked up a trade that I love. Wake up every morning loving what I'm about to do for the next 8, hopefully 10 or 12 hours. The pay and benefits are just a plus.

My sister graduated from Santa Clara University, not paying a dollar out of pocket.

too many people growup learning that 4 years of a boring degree to get a boring office job is the only option

More people need to learn a trade
Code/programming needs to be taught in every school across this nation from a young age
Learning how to trade stocks should be taught in junior high and high schools
Creative and critical thinking can't be thrust aside to appease standardized testing

There's a lot of issues on all levels right now.

Yes. I believe that education reform, specifically in the younger grades is necessary.

Let's bring back shop classes in high school. I would have loved to learn Welding, or auto.

The funny thing is that in a lot of places community colleges double at trade schools

Dude was ranting and raving about needing workers rebuild our infrastructure (which is be expensive also), but community colleges are the perfect place to teach more people how to weld, plumbing, how to be an electrician, etc...

-I actually think that HS should end early, and then students go to community colleges to learn a trade, learn how to manage themselves and work/volunteer 20 hrs a week. Then they go off to university.
