President to propose free community college on Friday

lots of reps given out in here

re: devaluation of associates degrees, aside from the provision that grades have to be maintained, you have to imagine that not everyone will take advantage of this. I'd bet there's more than a few Joe Slackers out there perfectly fine to do unskilled labor and live that life, college isnt for everyone and i'm sure everyone knows a lot of people who hated high school. Plus there will always be demand for grocery store workers, garbage men, waiters, etc. so work will be available. Like the problem today, unemployment is high for unskilled work, and yet theres a massive shortage of doctors/medical professionals. Obviously not everyone wants to/can be a doctor but if someone wants to pursue higher education, good for them adding to the skilled/educated workforce. They just have to do something about the minimum wage to make unskilled labor feasible to live on.

SMH @ OP being upset.

free community college = more educated people and a smarter nation

making education accessible will yield more positive than negative effects on the economy and your just worried about the root of all evil, money?

Its already free.  Nothing changes...

Most students who can't afford it (or parents of the child) get "financial aid" which is enough to pay the tuition of a CC. (all 4 years are paid)

On top of that, 95% of students who get financial aid in the sense of TAP and PEL get the left over money after tuition is paid.  Then they use this money to fund habits such as "sneakers" which is terrible.

Now for the other portion who don't qualify for full tap because you/your parents make too much, can afford to go to a CC in the first place.

All of this government help bothers me to a certain extent because WAY too many people illegally abuse the help.  I'm all about helping those who literally need the help whether its food stamps, wic, etc. but there's something wrong when people who drive new vehicles pay with EBT cards at the supermarket.

Well, how can you not expect someone like myself to be worried about tax hikes when I'm already paying nearly $35k on state/federal taxes yearly?

We continue to cut taxes for the rich and corporations, that money has to come from somewhere, no?

There's a great Ted talk out there about revolutionizing the education process with a more hands on approach. Listened to it at the gym yesterday. Wish I remembered the name of it.

Bring back the shop cl ***. Have kids get their hands dirty learning how to rebuild a carburetor. Too much damn emphasis on standardize testing and regurgitating information that not enough people are learning anymore.

There would be a large increase in law suits if shop was brought back. Lottlr johnny hurts his thumb? Million dollar lawsuit.

I think teaching people finnacial subjects is the best route.

For your consideration and information:

very thorough reporting by oliver and co. a very important piece to watch, in addition to that frontline source material, which i myself, have to watch.

Any initiative that results in a more educated populace is a good thing.

This every man for himself mentality is what's destroying this nation.

That is the of the culture of the Majority Race though, even since Europe, most immigrants don't have that ideology, they just look out for their own.

Complaining because of the devaluation of an associates degree?

Its already worthless. These colleges prices raise every semester for sub par education.

If this doesnt happen, community college will soon be privatized ( these chancellors are already lining their pockets) and no one will be able attend.

I mean damn, a sad day in America when we don't even want our young people to have access to higher education.  A litmus test to get into a community college? You mean like they used to do for voting? Reviling and repulsive.

Side note, I think the GPA requirements should be raised to 3.0 or 3.2, 2 yrs of community college is just taking Core Classes I would assume, and also I think the initiative should be limited to STEM Majors or people picking up a Trade, I`m sure I`ll get flack but what good is this when kids will just major in some stuff that we dont need like Mass Comm. I dont have kids so this doesn't impact me but I`m not really mad at it, I just hope They do something about Student Loans, I dont have much but I know it is a huge problem in General, where your recent grads dont do things like Buy a Car or Home because they have so much Student Loan debt and many of them work jobs that aren't related to their field so they can't even pay them off realistically, and maybe its me but when you are Single with no Kids there are literally no Tax breaks for you so you tend to get hardest with taxes that you in your head (maybe out of ignorance) dont even see a great benefit.

Who would you say "deserves" it?

I understand education is a right everyone has, but some people aren't cut for post high school education. If you want to go for higher ed, the government should instill requirements you have to meet. I guess grades are one way to see who deserves it or not
Guess you didn't read where he said they will academic requirements.

Put yourself in someone's shoes that has nothing to lose and is trying to make him/her self better. Were not talking car/house/materialistic ****. We're speaking on enlightening our minds to become better informed citizens. The playing field is corrupt and wealthy America is scared as **** to let us think for ourselves. So kindly Take that finger pointing and stick it up your ***

Also only stupid people actually believe that college is necessary to be successful, or that college actually makes you smarter. If you actually think that people who go to college become significantly smarter, then you're already brainwashed into the system that tries to make everyone believe you need a degree to be successful or have a career. Degrees are far more about marketability than education these days. Worse than that is the fact that people actually believe that if we cut spending from the US budget, that we should turn right back around and start spending money we still don't have, or that more degrees doesn't decrease the value of having a degree.

Also the entitlement in this thread is ridiculous. Blah blah blah this country gets this, this country gets that. These countries you're referring to probably aren't 18 trillion dollars in debt.

People that pick majors based on salary are sheeps. Going to spend your whole life doing something you don't like because of money? :{

at the end of the day if you want to major in Zoo-ology cool, but you can't be mad when there aren't any jobs. I always said find 3-4 things you like/love to do , look up how much they pay and go after the highest paying one/one most in demand , can't do what you love if you can't put food in your mouth to even be alive to do it lol.

and if you got a dentist who wanted to study zoology but realized where the money is don't get mad when he touches a nerve ending in your tooth :lol if we advocate everybody being STEM majors then the demand will go down as well as the salary so I'm good with people choosing other routes.

Don't put words in my mouth, kid. I didn't imply or say it's easy, or that you can easily get into career fields requiring degrees. Just that having one is not necessary to be successful. Get that through your thick skull. Here's a good documentary for those who haven't seen it.

When we talk about "personal responsibility" how come we don't hold these colleges accountable for offering these "worthless" degrees? Or low job placement rates? Or high student loan defaults? Shouldn't they be held to some type of standard too? They are being subsided, with taxpayer dollars. These type of scam schools with worthless degrees should lose accreditation or funding.

I'm tired of hearing about the "personal responsibility" crowd always complaining about people but always side with corporations and banks when things are clearly skewed.

If there are fields that require degrees, then college is still necessary.

What's next you're going to say how Bill Gates didn't go to college and became a billionaire? :lol

It's pretty simple. They can offer anything they want. If YOU choose it, it's YOUR fault. Colleges don't guarantee jobs after graduation. Why would a college be blamed for a loan from a bank that the person decided not to pay? That doesn't even make a shred of sense whatsoever. You're straight up just looking for someone to blame for peoples personal choices.
