(04-29) 21:18 PDT --The San Francisco Giants are in separate talks to join at least fourgroups that are pondering bids for the Golden State Warriors, thoughthe Giants are not seeking a controlling stake in the NBA franchise,multiple sources have told The Chronicle.

The Giants' participation could range from a marketing and sponsorship partnership to a direct financial investment.

A key ingredient also could be the construction of an arena for theWarriors in San Francisco near AT&T Park. The Giants and twodevelopment groups won a competitive process that gives them the rightto negotiate with the Port of San Francisco to develop 27 acres ofport-owned land in the Mission Bay project south of the baseballstadium.

Chronicle columnist C.W. Nevius reported on March 25 that somepotential Warriors investors have talked to the Giants about buildingan arena in Mission Bay, but the Giants' interest appears to go beyondbeing landlords. Sources said the team might be interested in joiningan ownership group even if it keeps the Warriors in Oakland. TheWarriors' lease at Oracle Arena runs another seven seasons.

Warriors owner Chris Cohan announced in March that the team hadhired a broker, Galatioto Sports Partners, to solicit bids. Someestimates peg the team's value from $300 million to $400 million.

Oracle Chief Executive Officer Larry Ellison publicly has said hewants to buy the team. Lafayette resident Mark Mastrov, who founded the24 Hour Fitness chain, also is believed to be interested.

It is not clear which groups have spoken to the Giants. None of thesources would talk on the record because of the sensitivity ofnegotiations.

Ownership stakes in multiple franchises are common outside the BayArea. Jerry Colangelo once had simultaneous controlling interest ofbaseball's Arizona Diamondbacks, basketball's Phoenix Suns and theArizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League.

The Giants indirectly have a relationship with the Warriors already,with their 33 percent ownership of Comcast Sports Net Bay Area, whichcarries Warriors games.

The Giants might be an attractive partner for Warriors suitorsbecause of their success in running a sports franchise in the Bay Area.None of the known groups have such experience. The Giants also ownexclusive marketing and sponsorship arrangements, even customerdatabases, that they could share in exchange for a stake in the team.

The potential to develop and run an arena for the Warriors nearAT&T could be the main motivation on both sides, but there aresignificant obstacles.

The Giants and their development partners still do not have anagreement with the port to do anything with the land, and localopposition to another sports venue South of Market could derail theidea.

Competition for the Warriors is expected to be fierce. Prospectivebidders are reviewing the broker's sale proposal. Bidders can respondwith an intent to bid, and then a formal bid. The Warriors reportedlywant a sale to be completed by late summer.

yeah, it's really pricey for non-UCSD students. the line-up isn't all that great, but you shoulda seen it two years ago. Sean freakin Kingston was the "headliner"

Ya boy is a working man now. I love the S.F. financial district. I will be working for the next year and probably reapply to law school for the 2010 cycle. I was pretty sad for a whole five minutes when I got rejected from Santa Clara. Hopefully relevant job experience will revamp my application next year. Woot.

I haven't taken the LSAT yet, June 7th is when I'm sitting, but I'm going planning for Fall 2011 enrollment.   Damn, I hope I get into a school....got me shook at thinking I just wasted part of my weekend by reading 450 pages.  How many schools did you apply to?

In Warriors related -  I can't see them trading the pick, I just can't.  Too many moving pieces in free agency for other teams will limit what we could do with it.  I still call 4/5 as the lottery slot. 

I wonder who the other groups are that are getting the sales offering.  Can't wait for it to become public.

OAKLAND, Calif. — Golden State Warriors guard Kelenna Azubuike has exercised the player option in his contract for the 2010-11 season.

The team announced the decision Tuesday. The 26-year-old Azubuike appeared in only nine games this past season before being sidelined with a torn patellar tendon in his left knee. He averaged 13.9 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

Azubuike has played in parts of four seasons with Golden State. His career scoring average is 10.6 points per game.
