Official 2009 New York Jets Offseason Thread... Welcome to the Jets, Mark Sanchez!

^ it would be great to have him beside Harris, but I doubt we have the cap space to sign him...
especially how he would probably want a long term deal.
Ray Lewis calls Jets scenario 'attractive'

February 5, 2009
A week ago at the Super Bowl in Tampa, Ray Lewis refused to discuss his impending free agency as he made the rounds on "radio row" in the media center. On Wednesday night at the Pro Bowl, he was a chatterbox in an interview with Jamie Dukes of the NFL Network.

Maybe the warm Hawaiian breezes loosened him up. (Or a Mai Tai or two.) Or maybe his agent told him to start playing the posturing game. Anyway, the Ravens' linebacker had nice some things to say about the Jets, who - in case you've been sleeping for a month - are coached by Lewis' former defensive coordinator, Rex Ryan.

Lewis spoke highly of Ryan, and when asked about the prospect of a reunion in New York, Lewis said, "That opportunity by itself seems attractive. It sounds right. It's like, wow, if something does happen where I'm not back in Baltimore, hmm, the Jets wouldn't be bad."

Discussing the possibility of playing in the No. 1 media market, Lewis said that would be a positive, not a negative. Referring to New York, Lewis said "it's a young Jets team that has a lot of talent across the board where if you (add) 52 in that equation, that team goes from being okay to 'Let's go win this.' That scenario by itself is always attractive."

Chew on that, Jets fans.

This only makes sense if it's a SENSIBLE 2 year deal.

Favre & Murda 1 in the same locker room = ticket FRENZY....

Assuming this is it for Brett, it is now time for us to find our QB.

Is it Kellen Clemens? Is it "The Pre-Season Wonder" Brett Ratliff? Do we have to look towards the draft or free agency?
I honestly don't understand why Brett Ratliff should even be considered as a starting QB. Sure he looked good during the pre-season, but thatwas vs. the backups of the opposing defense.
Kellen Clemens? I think he has the "stuff" but he has to put it all together. I believe he has the strong arm to play in harsh winds in theMeadowlands, but sometimes he doesn't make the right reads.
I would like the Jets to seriously look at getting a QB in this draft.

Michael Kay on 1050 ESPN Radio just said he thinks Michael Vick would be a good fit when he is released from prison and reinstated.

in that order.

Jeff Garcia- Eh'. If we were to sign a veteran QB, I guess I would rather it be him than Leftwich.
Mike Vick- Please tell you are kidding.

Mark Sanchez- If he is there, I guess we have to take him, but his arm strength is a question, and you know how Jetsfans are when it comes to arm strength.

Breaking News, but apparently the Jets released Laveranues Coles
eek.gif

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2009/02/new_york_jets_release_wide_rec.html

The Jets released veteran wide receiver Laveranues Coles this afternoon -- but both sides left open the possibility of his return to the team.

Coles, who was scheduled to earn a guaranteed $6 million salary for the 2009-10 season, wanted a long-term deal with the team. But when the two sides could not reach an agreement, they reached a compromise, giving Coles the right to find his own deal on the open market on the eve of free agency.

"We didn't leave on bad terms,'' Coles said. "It's not out of the question that I could come back."

Earlier today, they released Nugent.

Kicker Mike Nugent has declined an offer from the Jets to return and will test the free-agent market, The Star-Ledger has learned.

Edit: Double post because Yuku was out of wack out all afternoon

that caught me by surprise.
I couldn't find any details on how it would hit us on our salary cap, because I thought he had $7 mil guaranteed coming up.
Not sure.
I always liked Coles though. Dude played through injuries and what not, and has always been consistent. Though I don't think he's a true #1 receiver,he's def. appreciated.
I would like to see him come back though... with a decent contract.

This leaves a HUGE hole in our offense however. Aside from Cotchery, we have no one on the other side, nor a slot receiver. Stuckey was so-so playing the slot, but he ain't ready yet. Everyone loves this kid Clowney, but I ain't on the bandwagon yet.
The WR market in this years Free Agency is weak...
I see us trading for a WR or drafting one in the first day (HAKEEM NICKS!!)

Dumb move by him. He's not going to get what he's looking for. Great move by the Jets, frees up even more cap space.

Cotchery/Stuckey/Keller(can play in the slot)/Clowney is a receiving core that they can build on... i'd love to see Nicks in a Jets uni

F*ck Mike Nugent.

And if we sign Jeff Garcia all that means is that we aren't trying to win now & are just trying to be solid enough until we get a QB.

With that said..

Don't laugh, but Mike Vick Or Leftwich have more talent then Garcia & I believe in their abilities to play for a championship more then Garcia'ssolid self.

Big arm QB is what we need that wants to prove something. (Vick, Leftwich)

Not bums like Favre who was just in it for some extra $$$ or Garcia who just won't give up the fact he's nothing more then a great back up quarterback, but not top tier talent.

Bart Scott is (or is very close to being) a New York Jet.

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/2009/02/breaking-scott-signs-with-jets/

As we first reported earlier today at the NFP, the New York Jets have agreed to a new contract with former Ravens' linebacker Bart Scott. The deal is worth a reported $40-million dollars and should average out to $8-million per season.

This move by the Jets reunites Scott with former defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, who is now the new head coach of the Jets. Last season under Ryan, Scott contributed 82 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles to the NFL's second ranked defense.

Over the past week, rumors had been rampant on Scott's future, but in the end the 28-year old linebacker decided to leave Baltimore and head for New York-leaving the Ravens with a glaring hole at the linebacker position. The Ravens will now turn their attention to linebacker Ray Lewis-a free agent as well-and try to work out a muti-year deal wit the All-Pro linebacker. If a deal can't be reached with Lewis, along with the expected signing of safety Jim Leonhard in New York, the Ravens could have a much different look come September.

or http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/02/27/jets-expected-to-sign-lb-scott/
The Jets are expected to sign Scott to a contract worth about $8 million per year that could land in the range of $40 million total. He traveled to visit with the Jets this morning.
In either case, I think it's safe to say Bart Scott will be the newest Jet.

Great signing, I rather have Scott than Lewis. Lewis is 34, where Scott is 28 and on the rise

- From the NFL Blog link ^:
The Jets also are hosting a visit for Baltimore free-agent CB Corey Ivy. He could be yet another former player of Ryan's in New York that comes in, helps the Jets learn the new defensive system and contribute on the field as well.
- According to Adam Schefter (no link at the moment) Tony Richardson is returning on a one year contract, believed to be $500k. What a steal! Oneof, if not the best FB in the league in my opinion for the league minimum. Hopefully he will be used this season, he'll put in work for T.Jones and Leon

Also, after releasing Chris Baker a few weeks ago, we lost him to the darkside. He signed with the Patriots today. I was always a Baker fan (maybe theminority), but Keller puts in work. Too bad we couldn't keep Chris for a cheaper contract. I don't see him doing much for NE though, which ultimatelymeans he will be a Pro Bowl TE in 2009 because he left us.

What's the word on Corey Ivy?
I know he's good on ST, but him as a CB?
Dude is reaaally under-sized. Hopefully he can be our next Ray Mickens.

Edit: I read that the sign Lewis/trade D.Harris for Braylon Edwards was FAKE.

Looks like Scott has officially signed with us after giving the Ravens a chance to meet our initial offer.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3940727
Linebacker Bart Scott and the New York Jets agreed to a six-year deal worth $48 million on Friday, according to Scott's agent Harold Lewis.

Earlier in the day the Jets offered a five-year, $40 million deal. When New York upped the offer by a year, Scott chose the Jets over Baltimore.

Scott arrived at the Jets facility early Friday morning to meet with his former Ravens defensive coordinator, Rex Ryan, who is now the head coach of the team.

Scott has played seven seasons with Baltimore amassing 433 tackles and 16 sacks in his career. His best season was in 2006 when he made the Pro Bowl and the All-Pro team. In that season, he had 103 tackles and 9½ sacks.

I knew we weren't THAT dumb...

http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/jets/

A shocker: The Jets, spurned by Steelers free-agent G Chris Kemoeatu earlier in the day, have re-signed RG Brandon Moore, the Daily News has learned.

Moore agreed to a four-year, $16 million contract, including $10 million in guarantees.

This is a smart move by the Jets, who cut Moore yesterday because they didn't want to pay a $7 million roster bonus. They quickly came to their sense and re-signed their best run blocker, keeping their line in tact.

Our O-Line is intact, and we signed Moore to a decent contract.

Tannenbaum doing work.

ALSO...

Remember Jim Leonhard? He's the guy we all thought would be a lock to sign a free-agent deal with the Jets. He has been overshadowed today because of everything else going on, but the former Ravens safety will visit tomorrow with the Jets, according to his agent.

Another former Raven, Corey Ivy, visited today and took a physical, but from what I hear, could take other visits before making a decision. In the end, I suspect he'll sign with the Jets. I know the Jets feel good about their chances.

Jets finally getting a solid #2 Corner opposite of Revis??
http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/jets/2009/02/jets-ink-cb-ivy-look-to-trade.html

Jets target Ivy, look to trade for Sheppard

February 27, 2009
D. Rex is at it again.

Now that former Ravens ILB Bart Scott is in the fold, new Jets coach Rex Ryan has turned his attention to the secondary. They have targeted free-agent CB Corey Ivy, formerly of the Ravens, and are confident they can get a deal done.

But here's the big one - they're working on a trade for Eagles CB Lito Sheppard, according to league sources.

In fact, Sheppard is due to visit tomorrow with the Jets. The former first-round pick has one year remaining on his contract, with a base salary of $3 million, but he has been looking to be traded ever since the Eagles signed CB Asante Samuel last offseason.

Sheppard would step in as a starter, opposite Pro Bowl CB Darrelle Revis. Ivy will be a nickel back, his role with the Ravens.

Terms of Ivy's deal weren't immediately available. It's unclear what the Jets would be willing to part with for Sheppard.

Meanwhile, here's a breakdown of Scott's contract. The 6-year deal includes about $22 million in guarantees, with $27 million coming in the first three seasons. It's believed the Ravens offered a 6-year package for $45 million.

His agent, Harold Lewis, claims that Scott never wavered in signing with the Jets, and that he never went back to the Ravens to squeeze more money out of them.

EDIT: Jets send a 5th and Conditional 2010 pick.

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/2009/02/breaking-sheppard-to-be-traded/

I know he tailed off a bit in the end, losing a lot of playing time, but I think he can revamp himself in this defense. The Eagles secondary last year was veryshaky AS A WHOLE.
Anyone wanna shed light on his play style?

Kudos Mike Tannenbaum & Rex

I just wanna know what they're gonna do w/ my man Lowery.

I see that too.
We haven't had a play-maker in our WR core since Keyshawn. I wanna see if we can get my dude Maclin, but I highly doubt it. I want to grab a guy likeHakeem Nicks.

I still think Dwight has plenty of upside. He definitely showed flashes of that in the early stages of the season. I see him making a move at safety, or himcompeting for a spot at the nickel.

Damn, Tannenbaum is a %#%*$@$ wizard in this %!!%$. In the draft, I really want Maclin but I doubt he falls to us. Out of the rest of the recievers, I likeHeyward-Bey the best, he has the speed and ability to be an elite threat which I don't see in any of the other guys such as Nicks and Harvin.

I'm all football'd out for the day...

I'm about to celebrate this fine day and go out like that russian dude on them viagra pills.

See yall in the mornin'............... hopefully.
