He could always just use Titanium backup and backup all his apps+data that they have. Install the update and then re-root. Install Titanium again and restore apps+data.
I used to hate having my game saves and scores reset all the time, lol. Just make sure that new update you are about to install still has a root option available. My friend was saying that with AT&T's update for the S4, they didn't have a root option available yet for it...at least last week they didn't.
