The Old PlayStation Thread | *NEW THREAD IS UP*

It's wild that my hours are like that cause I didn't have a PS4 for majority of the year. Being unemployed was trash.

Finally got KH3 tho

PS5 is the first Playstation system I actually want backwards compatibility for because I don't think the difference in how the PS5 games and PS4 games look won't be that huge.... The jump from PS1 to PS2 to PS3 were all huge from a graphical standpoint

I always wondered why GTA4 and the Episodes of Liberty City weren’t re-released/available for PS4. Pretty much all the other GTA games are in the PS4 store.

Apparently there’s been a patent filed from Sony that will allow backwards compatibility from PS1-PS4 on PS5. It doesn’t specify whether it’ll be digital, disk or both.

My guess is digital for PS1-PS3, probably have to re-purchase some of the games and full BC for PS4.

My G Ricky D Ricky D you best believe that the first 3 years of PS5 will have a steady supply of PS4 remasters of the 'complete' editions.

PS4 content going to be invalid right off the bat.

Exactly why I won’t buy PS4 games once the PS5 is officially announced. You can almost guarantee that majority of 2019-2020 releases will make it to PS5. The only exception for me will be TLOU Part II.

PS4 and PS5 will both have x86 architecture so expect PS5 to be backwards compatible with PS4 right off the bat.
PS3 and older will be up in the air, especially the PS3?

I think PS5 will have a boost mode similar to the PS4 Pro that will help older PS4 titles run better so the amount of remasters should decrease.
Big games coming out nearer the end of the gen like TLOU 2 and Death Stranding will probably get a PS5 version with all the upgrades possible.

PS4 worldwide shipments top 94.2 million
8.1 million consoles sold in the three months ended December 31, 2018.

Worldwide total shipments for PlayStation 4 have reached 94.2 million, Sony announced in its financial results for the three months ended December 31, 2018.

A total of 8.1 million PlayStation 4s were shipped during the third quarter, which is down 0.9 million from the same period the previous fiscal year.

Sony’s previous forecast of 17.5 million PlayStation 4s shipped in fiscal year 2018, which runs from April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019, remains unchanged.

Here are a couple of additional statistics:

  • PlayStation Plus subscribers topped 36.3 million as of December 31, 2018, which is up 2.1 million from the previous fiscal year.
  • PlayStation 4 software sold 87.2 million units in the third quarter, which is up 0.7 million from the previous fiscal year. 37 percent of those sales were full game software digital downloads, compared to 28 percent the previous year.

- PS4 is the best selling Console of 2018, worldwide.
- PS4 is the number 1 selling console worldwide, 5 years in a row.
- PS4 is one year away from tying with PS2's record of the longest consecutive best sold console. PS2 has 6 years in row.
- PS4 is on track to be the 2nd best selling console when it crosses 103 million. This will make all top 3 selling consoles a PlayStation.

Crazy how it's still $299. They've still got a price drop in their pocket to maintain sales. Not to talk of games like TLOU still to come.

Not even their final form.

PS3 was PowerPC architecture so you need an emulator to run that content but it's very doable as is the case with Xbox One X backward compatibility (x86) with Xbox 360 (Power PC).

Main thing with the older content is licensing. I highly doubt we'll see a reduction in remasters - in fact the remastering will be far, far worse as there's revenue in getting consumers to repurchase the content. Expect 'enhanced' versions of PS4 remasters and PS4 original content (GoW, Spiderman, HZD, etc...) to get the full on remaster treatment.

You'll best believe Rockstar got GTA V ready to go for PS5 launch.

My belief was that PS3's Cell architecture made everything hard to program for and emulation without PS3 hardware on the chip was a lot harder than what XB1X had to do with the 360.
They were both based on Power PC but the Cell was very different to the 360's CPU. That's why PS3 games on PS Now are using physical PS3 hardware in server blades.

Remastering will still be around since it was a money maker but I think consumers will be less inclined because this time round they won't have to wait 7 8 years for the next gen of consoles and even if they did, you had the mid gen options like the PS4 pro which gave us 4K and other benefits before the next gen.

It wouldn't surprise me if some of these older PS4 games got patched to enable "PS5 enhancements modes" while playing it on the PS4 disc.
XB1X did it with Final Fantasy XIII by improving the resolution and textures from the 360 version.

I think either that or straight up boost mode will be the option for most PS4 games.
If Sony wants HZD, GOW, SpiderMan, TLOU ETC to be re-released as remasters then they better come with some big improvements, double the framerate and all include all the DLC.
If they're going to do all that then bring on the remasters but even with remasters I don't think they wont have BC on the PS5.

GTAV can do what it wants :lol
100 Million sold and its still going.

D Double D Double Yup you're right about the PS3's Cell processor, it was Power PC but heavily customized vs. X360's implementation.

It would be crying shame if these games did not have their 30FPS limitation removed in the inevitable remasters.

Checked out the bloodborne comic series to delve deeper into the lore. After 8 issues, I can’t say it cleared up anything

Aesthetically it was dope though

Backwards compatibility sounds promising but i won't hold my breath. Feel like it will cut into all this "mini retro" console hype if they do it.
I just want to play the tony hawk games
SAME.

People always expect this. QuadHD/4K at 60 fps with possible ray-tracing-like tech will be a game changer.

PS5 will be a first day pick up if Backwards compatible with PS4. I missed that whole generation of gaming and would love to pick up a ton of their games.

I know the Wii sold 100M+

Wii is behind PS1 by couple million units and way behind the PS2. PS4 will breeze by both of them this year.

Don't think we'll see ray tracing since AMD are behind on that front and it's really resource intensive so it'll be too expensive to implement in consoles but who knows, I hope to be wrong.

4K 60fps though should be more common next gen but as usual we will see developers prioritise graphics so 30fps games aren't going anywhere.

I just hope we get more options like on the pro for some games so we can select modes that prioritise graphics or modes for frame rate

D Double D Double did you just say that the PS4 will breeze by the PS2 or do you mean they’ll breeze by the Wii and PS1?

I don’t know when we’ll see another system surpass the PS2. Backwards compatibility and cheapest DVD player around at the time of release just might be a little too much for a new console to overcome.

People are going to lose their jobs behind Anthem. It's awful.

How so? Game is solid overall for what it’s trying he be. Only thing they haven’t been too clear about and how they get people to keep playing long term is the end game.
