I agree. If I viewed this movie as a standalone movie without knowing much of the backstory, I would've probably liked it more. In fact, that's exactly what happened with my friend and his girlfriend; my friend is a huge geek who left the movie saying "This movie doesn't even make sense" while his girlfriend enjoyed the action and thought it was a fun way to kill a couple of hours on a Sunday.
The excuse of "They took everything you thought Star Wars was about and completely flipped it
" shouldn't be a positive thing.
Imagine you're writing a 10 page university paper, and after 7 pages, you completely contradict the argument and points you were presenting in the first 8 pages
Again, I am not a huge Star Wars fan. I would've been completely fine with Luke being a weird animal molester hermit, people being able to use force powers to survive in space, ships not being able to hyperdrive in front of the Rebel fleet in order to cut them off, lightsaber mastery being handed down just by grabbing a lightsaber, etc. IF these were consistent with the universe the first 6 movies established.
I don't need to go to film school to ask a question like "How come Luke, the son of Anakin, did not become proficient with a lightsaber immediately after turning on Anakin's saber for the first time, but random scavenger Rey was able to defeat a trained knight after the same saber spoke to her???"
