One of the biggest questions lingering from The Force Awakens was, “Who are Rey’s parents?” Was she a Skywalker, because everyone in Star Wars is somehow connected to that darn family, or a Kenobi? It turns out, as Kylo Ren explained in a powerful moment during The Last Jedi, Rey’s mom and dad are… nobody, “filthy junk traders” who sold her for “drinking money. They’re dead in a pauper’s grave in the Jakku desert. You come from nothing.” That’s a definitive answer to the parentage question, and it’s also the “most difficult thing dramatically for Rey in this movie to hear,” according to director Rian Johnson.

“The easy thing would be, ‘Yes, your parents are so and so and here’s your place in the world’… The hardest thing she could hear would be, ‘No, you’re not going to get the answer. This is not going to define you. You’re going to have to find your own place in this world. Kylo is going to use that even as leverage to try and make you feel insecure, and you’re going to have to stand on your own two feet.’” (Via)

But Johnson, who is leading a new Star Wars trilogy but won’t be returning for Episode IX, also teased the possibility that Kylo was lying to Rey. “Anything’s still open, and I’m not writing the next film,” he said. “[J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio] are doing it.” Johnson added, “With all of these movies, Obi-Wan’s whole speech about a certain point of view always applies, so I think that you have to always think about the context of how information is given.”

Luke Skywalker is a name that resonates throughout the world. People know that name and have never seen a Star Wars film a day in their life. This movie killed Luke Skywalker and the general audience doesn’t care. This film went from making slightly under TFA to greatly below. The trend right now is showing TLJ to gross around 1.4-1.5 bil. About 500 mil less than TFA. How much of that is not being able to capture the magic of the first Star Wars in 10 years again? How much of that is disinterest in fans? Mind you Luke Skywalker is all over the promotion for this film. I never believed that TLJ could surpass TFA in box office but I always felt that the material TLJ had to work with could be compelling enough to keep audiences coming back and keep the box office close. Regardless the film is doing very well but Disney has to take notice. This wasn’t a situation where there was real competition. Disney was running away with the highest grossing film of 2017 regardless. But Star Wars outgrossing Beauty and the Beast isn’t a cause for celebration. The fact that Star Wars will only past Beauty and the Beast with only about 50 mil or so is something to look at. The current trend is showing Star Wars at finishing out at around 1.4 billi. Perspective is important so we’re looking at a top 10 highest grossing film of all time. We’re also looking at the first film with Luke Skywalker headlining it in 30 years making less than Avengers and Avengers 2. I don’t think Rey and Kylo are more of a draw then Luke Skywalker so their are real concerns for episode 9.

you sure? :nerd:

the story isn't done yet....
That's kind of where my mind is at, if they drop the ball on the final part of the story, then the assumptions made now will be looked upon as justified. It doesn't have to even be anything expected, but if it's a good 3 part movie, it is going to entail all three parts to craft an interesting story. This is the lead up to it, we'll see were it goes.

True too most of that, but it's reys and kilos story, in the end. Luke is a part of their story now. I can understand the nostalgia of what was laid out before, but I'm just going to have to wait and see how much of a role he actually plays in it all, now.

Maybe Kenobi (or somebody else) sent her parents off on a Rogue 1 type mission where they were was disguised as a pair of drunks

Oh, the speculation.... I can only imagine the next writer sitting down with it all. Like, what can they make of this? It wouldn't be a stretch for kylo to be selling her wolf tickets, and with the info or background given, it's pretty much wide open. It wouldn't be much of a surprise, even, if it were the case. The most obvious ball drop would be her parents being nobody. For the criticisms received to be heard and not have done anything to incorporate a twist would be easy enough now, but I'm no scriptwriter.

Figuring where her maybe grandpops came from, they have options at this point. But yeah, noones is not one of them.

The worst thing that could happen to episode 9 is to try and shoehorn Rey being a lineage characters child after all this “let the past die” nonsense. People would really be petitioning to take TLJ out of canon then. Beyond that there’s nothing there to explore, everyone is dead. Who cares if she’s Han and Leia’s kid, their dead and all she’ll have left is her indecisive brother who’s read “Flowers in the Attic” one too many times. Who cares if she’s Luke daughter, you never explored any of the emotions that would have on him or her and he’s dead now. Obi-Wan is dead and if this movie can make Luke Skywalker completely irrelevant the general audience won’t care about Obi-Wan. The ship has sailed on anything interesting or any type of cohesion amongst this so called “Skywalker saga”. They have to deal with their Mary-sue now.

I feel bad for you man. But I told you. Everyday, for 2 years. You did this to yourself, not Disney, not Rian, not JJ, no one. It's all on you.

Most of us have no issues with how they handled Rey, you let it ruin the movie for you. That's a tough break man. :{

What are you even talking about.
You wasted typing that essay because everything in it holds no weight.
Surpassing TFA does not equal success. Sit down.

uhh what?
Obviously you're either kidding or blinded by whatever angst you have.

Ask around. Are you involved in Star Wars forums? CP should start a poll. Little girls ain’t going crazy over Rey like Elsa from Frozen. Rey is a nobody. Literally and figuratively.

No JJ, Disney and Kathleen made me sit through a movie that’s whole purpose is finding Luke Skywalker who’s disappeared and having a mysterious girl follow the same heroes journey him and his father did. They made this girl powerful in the force like Luke and his father. They allowed her to be drawn to and use Luke and his father’s lightsaber, they left her surname a mystery, made her obsessed with finding her family who disappeared and made her be the one to finally find Luke Skywalker, not Luke’s twin sister, not any of Luke’s loved ones.

....I promise you I’m not the only one who noticed.

Pretty sure my essay didn’t say that

The movie's whole purpose was to find Luke, and nothing else? Just find Luke?

A Star Wars film, with only one goal/purpose? Are you sure about that? Because that's not what these movies have ever been. There's always multiple things goin on, even if there is a "main" storyline.

YOU had a singular storyline/purpose you wanted/hoped for with the Rey/Luke thing, and you didn't get that, now you believe the entire film should have had that same focus.

C CP1708 why are you acting like that wasn’t the main story line? The first line of the opening crawl is “Luke Skywalker has disappeared”

Tell me, if TFA wasn’t trying to lead us to believe Rey was Luke’s daughter or even Rey was a legacy character’s child, why didn’t they tell us in the very first film who her parents were? Were they not confident in their pointless Mary Sue captivating viewers?

You gotta move on from this Rey lineage thing. There's still another film and I'm sure they'll answer you. Maybe not what you want, but just wait. Jesus.

I agree with you on the Luke thing but I didn't expect Rey's family to be revealed. I watched TFA on a flight last week, and that fish looking person that had Luke's lightsaber says something like "You're never going to find them and solve your past, but you have more important things to take care of in the future".

I liked that movie until Rey somehow beats Kylo Ren (a trained knight since childhood), the first time she turns on a lightsaber  The "he was injured" excuse is pure nonsense too. At least it made sense for Finn to last for 30 seconds since he had melee training as a stormtrooper. Rey's experience was fighting off some freaks on a desert planet with a stick.

Luke had some light to moderate training for a couple movies including use of a lightsaber, and he still got treated like a rag doll by Vader in their first duel. THAT is believable.

LOL being fixated with Rey's lineage is natural but I fully expect them to not even reveal it in the 3rd film. Much respect
if they go that way.

The story has now become Kylo's journey to dominance as much as Rey's journey to become a Jedi. If anything, Kylo's
ride is WAY MORE INTERESTING. Kylo-Rey dynamic is so engaging I just want more Rey-Kylo confrontation.
