President to propose free community college on Friday

I think the idea is to bridge the gap for children/families who can't afford college to send high school grads to college. Free community college for 2 years will hopefully allow the transition into a 4 year univeristy/college for a Bachelor's degree. Then, high school degrees turn into college degrees.

as far as loans go, id never encourage anyone to take out private loans past a certain amount...

I'd never recommend private loans period. Gov't loans are one thing, but private loans will **** you up. The interest rates can change whenever and usually arent fixed. Also gov't loans can be much more forgiving.

agreed...gov loans allow for IBR, private do not...
i had ALL private loans, but lucked out with a great co-signer and very low interest rates ...

Very true. I took private loans to stay at a school that wasn't good for me because I was more worried about coming from a "well reputed" school than getting good grades at an affordable price.
A message to all my high school NTers.
Unless you get some sort of significant scholarship (sports, room and board covered, tuition covered, 50% tuition covered) always go in state. I listened to my mom tell me to go to the "prestigious school" instead of listening to my dad and who said go instate and go away at the same time. I didn't listen, now I'm hurting for it. I'm getting my stuff on track again and now I can see much clearer. SUNY & CUNY (well only some CUNYs) are very good for their price ranges and don't let people tell you otherwise. Go to your state school, you won't regret it.

Exactly, where I`m from kids on welfare had the off brand gear and were rough looking, only kids who were in jordans and stuff were cats slanging dope or moms was a strpper/pops hustled, or people from well off families. lol I didnt get my first pair of Jordans until College.

That's more of a statement and an opposition to the legisltion. An argument would be, would people be better off with this or will nothing change?

I assume you are anti all social programs, social security, pell grants, etc etc.
hell why should your tax dollars pay for cops when you own a gun to protect yourself, why should someone who knows how to put out fires hard earn money go towards paying for fire fighters.

Not too mention, the CC's could easily implement gimmick fees and services (which they already do), and reallocate money to make sure there's no loss. It's already established that most folks don't need to spend much to go to these colleges so this legislation is to help a minority of people who have to pay out the pocket. This can happen, it's a matter of how it all goes down.

You guys love Obama so much. If Obama really wanted to help people he'd get the government backed loans out of college. Schools started jacking their prices as soon as the government got involved with college funds, since they know they're going to get their money no matter what, and what does this plan do to fix it? Nothing. People are still going to want to go to big schools after high school, and will still take out huge loans that they can't pay, and then complain about it like a lot of you guys.

People complain because there are bs reasons for why tuition is rising. Nobody is complaining on having to take out a loan. That's just stupid. My tuition shouldn't rise to $46 a unit because my dumb *** school wants to build a pool & other useless junk like gyms. Those are luxuries that aren't needed yet rise up the cost. I shouldn't have to suffer because my dumb *** school decides to build a building, find out they're being screwed by the construction company, and end up demolishing the building. i shouldn't have to pay more because faculty feels like they deserve more money. There's no legit reason you can give me on why tuition has risen 1000% since 1978.

This is so hilarious to me. Not saying it has never happened ever but it is definitely an outlier. I got Pell Grants and Fed Loans and was STRUGGLING freshman year.The "Pull yourself up by the bootstraps" set is comical to me. First it's "Get a job" then it's "Get a better job" then it's "Get an education to get a better job" now it's "Get a better job to get an education"
I wish the "I did it all myself" folks would just say that they hate poor people. Be honest with yourselves.
