If I remember correctly, the numbers originally represented the year the family came to America. So PHO 89 would be 1989, PHO 78 would be 1978, etc. etc. But with all the new spinoff names and triple digit numbers I guess they could just be arbitrary.

She was pho'in with you. No vietnamese I know pronounces it that way, but then again, there are different dialects.
