Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

I know I'm jumping the gun, but we should make an anticipation list,
nerd.gif
.

Just like Top 10 Films for 2012 that we're looking forward to.

I have a feeling I'll be asking a lot of questions on this one.. but yellow is for ones we're on the fence about? If so, I'll throw in another vote of support for Crazy, Stupid, Love.

And I don't have a problem with everything so far, doesn't mean I'd vote for them, though.

Yellow ones are in too. It just means someone tried to vote it out and someone else wanted to keep it.

If you've seen the uncolored ones, good? bad?

and JPZ...starting to feel that way, hearing ridiculously good things.

Kinda been working on one

Django Unchained (Quentin)
Looper (Brick is one of my favorites and this sounds amazing)
Gravity (...absolutely loved his last movie Children of Men)
The Master (really respected and loved parts of his last movie, There Will Be Blood)
Seven Psychopaths (writer/director of In Bruges with Farrell again)
Wettest Country (I really, really liked The Proposition and this cast is amazing. Tom Hardy's my fav actor right now)
Gangster Squad (sounds like LA Confidential meets The Departed...and that cast)
The Raid (that trailer
eek.gif
)
Skyfall (loved Casino Royale and after hearing what happened to Quantum, I'm all in)
The Cabin In The Woods (Joss Whedon wrote it, enough for me)

Then the big movies you end up seeing regardless: TDKR, The Avengers, The Hobbit, Hunger Games
Prometheus or Cloud Atlas *crosses fingers* one of these has to be incredible, that simple.

NT Film Awards shortlist

So what shouldn't be on this list?

Anyone can jump in, it's about get a shortlist of eligible movies.

And it'll be the one list for both best prestige type film and the best summer/horror/comedy movie.

If it's in red, than no one's vouched for it and it's out, if you've seen it and wanna keep it on the list, say something
If it's in yellow than it made the shortlist, but someone disagreed
If it's in green then it made the shortlist with no objection

If there's any missing movies from last year that were good, say something.

I left a few uncolored, because I've heard good things but haven't seen them. If you have...

^ No, I was specifically asking JRS if he had seen all the movies in his last reply.

I'll be watching Take Shelter soon. The IMDB/critical reception was very good.

"At 23, I am prepared to say: Jurassic Park kicks Star Wars' +**."

That's my brother's current FB status.

"*sigh*… … … *unfriended*"

That's my only response so far.

Wrapped up Season 2 of Breaking Bad.

I like how this season focused on Walt embracing his Heisenberg persona, while Good Ol' Walter White moved further into the background.

He's in deep !!@! with Skylar though.

Gus is an intriguing character. Seems like a dude not to be %!++*# with. Looking forward to seeing how his relationship with Walt and Jesse develop going forward.

On to season 3.

Man I gotta finish up season 4 of Breaking Bad...Only watched the first 2 episodes online and haven't watched any since before Thanksgiving..I was rolling through every season too....Probably the best show I've seen

Bought the collected stories of Arthur c Clarke. Massive amount of short stories by one of the greatest

Bout 400 pages deep into the fourth game of thrones books. Remains awesome but they start concentrating on secondary characters so I understand why hardcore fans might be pissed after waiting two or three years or however long for it. Since I don't have that long wait I don't mind. Great so far

^ I jumped back in the conversation during that Lakers Kobe @ Bucks game, and here's the gist of it:

- bunch of dorks agreeing with my brother

- me: Wait, are you guys talking about a specific installment? Please say yes, because that would definitely be slightly understandable, if you were talking about one of the worst Star Wars movies against the best Jurassic Park. I would disagree, but that would slightly be more understandable than you guys implying that, as a whole, the entire Jurassic Park story is better than the Star Wars epic.

- dorks: No, the whole series. Star Wars is just flashlights, robots, and a bunch of fictional species of weird creatures. Jurassic Park is far more intense, and far less corny.

- Ok, in terms of 'more dinosaurs' and 'less space creatures', Jurassic Park is better. But in terms of basically everything that actually matters in a quality movie, things like 'character development', 'plot twists', and 'story line', This is absolutely no contest. Plus Harrison Ford >>>>> Jeff Goldblum

Take Shelter: A movie that will by and large be ignored by the populous, very undeservedly so. Tense movie once it got going, the final act was done great. And the ending... THAT is how you end a damb movie. The acting was solid all around, Michael Shannon seems to play 'going crazy' perfectly though, as he was better in this than in 'Bug.'
Not a movie I'd recommend if you don't like slow developing movies that take time to set the stage and story before anything else, but Michael Shannon's issues are put out front immediately so you dont have to wait for that and his hallucinations at least. CGI was pretty damb good, and the movie keeps you guessing and wondering if it's actually real or not. The soundtrack was intense and dark, keeping with the mood.

8/10. Again, it's slow. But it's worth getting invested into if for nothing than the ending. Not sure if Shannon's performance was worthy of knocking any Oscar hopefuls out of their spot, but he put on a damn good show.

The movie as a whole does deserve a Best Pic nomination over some of these others though *cough IncrediblyLoudandWarHorse cough*

Hey, dudes. Been on hiatus for like a month. Not dead or anything. I've actively posted on here for almost ten years, and that was probably the longest I've went without posting, times five.
laugh.gif

Anyway, I'm just going to yap about what I've seen since I last posted in a minute, and catch up on probably 100 pages that I missed later.

Alright, more or less caught up.

First off, I'm in on this Oscars thing.

What I've seen lately:

2011:

50/50, The Descendants and The Ides of March: 8.6
I'm grouping these together for two reasons. One, I couldn't really distinguish between them, score-wise (but I thought they were all excellent). And two, I started typing from the bottom, and I don't want to anymore. If I had to separate them in some way, I guess the order would be as is (alphabetical).

Another Earth: 8.4
Has anyone else seen this? I loved it. I almost want to give it a higher grade than the top three. Cool little indie drama more or less disguised as sci-fi. The performances, the pace, the story and the ending were all nearly perfect, really. Highly recommended.

Moneyball: 6.6
It was watchable, but really misleading and sensationalized. There was a reason why almost nobody in baseball approved of it. Best Picture nominee? Not even a little bit. I respect the challenge of adapting a book like that into a film, but it was still average.

Paranormal Activity 3: 5.4
Didn't like it much at all, which surprised me. Maybe the story really escaped me and I couldn't connect it enough with the first two. It gets a small bump because of reputation and my horror bias. Edit: Oh, I should mention that redbox must have a different version or something. Almost nothing I saw in any commercial was in this (her jumping out the window, throwing water on Toby, the exorcist or whoever visiting, car scenes, etc.).

2012:

The Devil Inside: 3.4
One of the worst I've seen in awhile. Nothing about it was worth watching. What a lazy ending. Dual meaning, because the ending to the movie was inexcusably bad, and the super-slow credits to pad run time... amateur. No bias could save it.

Haywire: 5.6
I really have no idea what the purpose was, but it wasn't atrocious or anything. I saw it maybe 8-10 days ago and I remember very little about it. The girl was sexy.

Oh, and I knocked out The Hunger Games books. Pleasantly surprised, man. The last one was kind of a let down, but the first two were so good that I completely understand not being able to do it a final time. I surely never really expected that kind of ending, though. It was the complete opposite, in fact.

For those of you that have read the Game of Thrones books... I've got about 100 pages left in the second book and from what I've read, it seems like they'd be stretching to get two seasons out of this book... Am I wrong? I can see where they'd likely split the second season from the third, but it just seems like they'd have a tough time squeezing 18-20 hours outta the material here.

saw The Grey, pretty solid survival film, not an action film like it's being advertised as, but good pace and feel.

Went on a Fassbender mini-thon and finished watching Shame and A Dangerous Method.
Shame, if you didn't know by now, is a story about sexual addiction. It is an incredible character study, and beautifully shot. It has a very slow and deliberate pace, almost like a Lost in Translation in New York City. Fassbender really shines in the role, but the character may leave the audience detached. Carey Mulligan plays his sister, and their on screen chemistry is fantastic. I've never really enjoyed any of her other performances, except for, An Education, but I loved her in this role. With all that said, the story does lack a definitive resolution. IMO, with a subject like addiction, this film properly portrays a self-destructive cycle (which is clearly book-ended by the first and final scene) that really has no end.

Keira Knightley & Viggo Mortensen join Fassbender in A Dangerous Method, which revolves around Jung (Fassbender), and his relationships with his patient Sabina (Knightley) and his "mentor," Freud (Mortensen). As interesting as the subject matter is, I felt the film really dropped the ball on really exploring the characters and their relationships. At an hour and a half, they should have either focused on Jung's relationship with Sabina, or lengthened the film to accommodate a more organic flow with his indifference to Freud. Fassbender and Mortensen are basically on auto-pilot in their roles and Knightley puts in a very good performance. The film has its' moments, but with personalities like Freud and Jung, the story should have been much more interesting and entertaining.

In regards to how I would rank both films, I could easily find a slot for Shame in my top 15 of the year, while A Dangerous Method is a film I recommend, but it's not necessarily something you should rush out to see.
