Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

The Weebay .gif should have its own award. Like most surprising performance a la Colin Farrell in 'In Bruges.' Not necessarily the best, but the most surprising given track record and expectations. It could also go to the best person if it's deserved.

First nomination for the Dolan: M. Night Shyamalan.

then I gotta nominate George Lucas

for the acting awards?

The Chris Paul
The Blake Griffin
The Boshtrich
The Big Baby

I'm getting lost in here somehow.  I need the names to match up with the awards, George Lucas, Weebay (???) A Dolan, and now a Bastich (he an actor or somethin?)

@#$% man, just tell me where I can vote for Fast Five to pick up their Oscar at.

Gimme a leader board, with the translations and all that so I can work off that.

Just saw that on Wednesday. Like you said, pleasantly surprised. I was going to ask if any of you had seen it, but figured it might be another one of those movies that flew under the radar of most folks, and I was in the minority of people who had liked it, or even seen it.

Did it.

I know this will garner hate, but.... Liam Neeson deserves a nomination for Best Male in a Leading Role after this. I know the Academy doesn't look back this far.

Just see the film, and you'll see.
No way I could watch Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Descendants on the same evening. I hate to admit it, but I fell asleep during Tinker the first time I saw it. It was actually a solid spy thriller, but a major letdown, considering my expectations. I love Gary Oldman, but his performance as Smiley was nothing spectacular.
I'll probably catch The Grey next week.

Got thru Girl/Dragon/Tattoo last night.  The Fincher version.

Really not sure why this was done.  I guess I should read the book first, but the Sweedish movie was so good, and this was changed just so slightly, that I don't get why even make the attempt.
Even with the English language, I think I struggled more understanding this film and it's accents than reading the subtitles in the first one.  We had a hard time figuring out words Craig and some of the others were speaking, it was frustrating to me, and it's essentially the second time I've seen the film.
The performances were fine, no qualms there, but I really don't see anything added that made me sway one way or another.  The first one I saw, is still the one that resonated with me most.  It's possible if Fincher's came out first, maybe I would like this one more than the other.

My thinking was the only way he could have worked this story would be to completely change it.  Different story they're investigating, diff country, all of it.  Otherwise, I've seen the book put onto film, I don't need to see it again, with a different language as the main difference.

Just wondering, but why wasn't The Skin I Live In, nominated for best foreign film? I have to admit, I've been lacking in foreign language films recently, but I felt it was pretty good.

I don't think that would have worked at all. I also heard that this one adhered more to the original story than the Swedish version did. I don't know, I thought this one was pretty good.

Good, sure, but I've already seen it, just with different people.  I barely remember the first movie, and still knew what was coming each scene, I'm not sure what they were hoping to achieve.

MrO, count Ill in as well for the Oscars.  But we need to get it hammered out what exactly we are doin in terms of organization.

MrO, Nos, Johnny, CP, Ill, who else we got on board?

Categories, amount per category...

Need to be up and running for next week don't we?

CP you catch it in theaters?

I thought it was suspenseful as hell. You can still know what's going to happen in a movie and it still be suspenseful, I thought it was.

Big J's in too

Hmm...let's start it like that. That list is too big to just say nominate from it, so let's make it exclusive?
Basically just call out movies from the list as being garbage and if someone disagrees, it stays on the list.
Whoever can jump in.

And it'll be the one list for both best summer/horror/comedy movie and prestige type film.

So I guess Super 8'll stay in
eyes.gif

I disagree on Scream 4 (solid for what it was) and Insidious, cuz it was a pretty weak year for horror and those had some great moments in them.

Still gotta watch Certified Copy and Tin Tin, heard good things about both.

And 30 Minutes or Less...if it wasn't for a couple jokes...
30t6p3b.gif
It's like Drillbit Taylor level.

I'll update em all.

I was reeaaallll borderline on Scream 4. Never saw it, so I couldnt say for sure. Crossed it off just cause. Insidious, I couldnt take serious and ended up laughing more than not.

Super 8 for sci-fi. With it there's like 5 movies that could be considered on my list, so why not round it out.
30 Min. or Less was funny to me. Doesnt mean it's the best comedy of the year (it's not), but it deserves mention since there was a real lack this past year (9 on my list).

The River anyone? Definitely looks like its trying hard to be the next Lost, but maybe it could be. Anyone else plan on checking it out?

Wait, why are you just crossing off all the horror movies? I don't think they deserve to be film of the year, but still, there were some good horror films this year.

Wow, I really didn't see too many new ones this year...

I don't really have much of a list to go off of for best film, but I know I saw enough to pick a Top 5 Horror
laugh.gif

Paranormal 3
Straw Dogs (More psychological thriller, but I'm putting it there, there are scenes of horror).
Insidious
Fright Night

Okay, no I can't.
laugh.gif

Whoops, meant to leave PA3 on there (didnt watch it though). Straw Dogs got real poor reviews, so I crossed it off. Could 'Attack the Block' be counted? That was a action/comedy/horror movie, right?

^attack the block, for sure. There are gonna be 2 Best Pictures, one prestige, one...laidback? lol for horror, comedy, blockbuster, action movies.

I get that with Insidious, movie caught me off-guard and I was ready to crown it best PG13 horror since The Ring until things went full ******.
grin.gif

And on the other end, I was hyped for 30 min, to get letdown hard. I see you on it, but then I'll say Bad Teacher was funnier and vouch for it.
The dryhumping scene>>>
laugh.gif

a couple more I'd keep
Limitless was a solid movie, things got off track with the Russian stuff, but it was so well made, a rare good DeNiro showed up too.
Sucker Punch...I know...but the extended edition is the real movie and it's solid good genre filmmaking. The one that came out in theaters was a studio destroyed hackjob.
Then Winnie the Pooh.
grin.gif
I think I've seen it 7 times cuz of my niece and I'm convinced it's the best animated movie of the year. Perfect for what it is.

You saying those were all good movies JA?
grin.gif

and lawdog, I'm holding off on The River, Alcatraz and Touch to see which ones wash out.
Gave Heroes, V, FlashForward and The Event all shots
30t6p3b.gif
Gonna wait this time.

Scream 4 certainly stays. Crazy Stupid Love needs to stay as well. I say drop Hanna, movie was terrible imo. I'm tryin to watch Tinker/Soldier this weekend, gimme a bit on that one.

I get that with Insidious, movie caught me off-guard and I was ready to crown it best PG13 horror since The Ring until things went full ******.

It was the best horror film since The Exorcist for the first 30, 45 minutes. God DAMN was that haunting.

Sucker Punch...I know...but the extended edition is the real movie and it's solid good genre filmmaking. The one that came out in theaters was a studio destroyed hackjob.

I really wanted to track it down and use the Best Buy Trade&Save discount on it (along with The Incredible Hulk), but each time I went they were sold out, and they restocked when I couldn't go.
30t6p3b.gif

Sucker Punch just didn't make sense. Zach Snyder is a much better director than what I saw on the big screen. He's no Scorsese, but I think he can be a really good genre filmmaker.

PA3 was very good. Probably best horror film of the year.

Straw Dogs I really enjoyed, and it's a movie I would enjoy and that I knew I would enjoy. I wish more people would check it out. Alexander Skarsgard is awesome. It's not for everyone though, the gore can be a bit much. The script isn't anything amazing, but all the performances were fine, it's no Devil/The Happening. It was as good as any of the soso summer blockbusters on there (like Cowboys & Aliens).

No, that's the movie I saw this past year..

I skip on a lot of movies just because I much rather see things in theater.

My favorites of the year: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Hugo, J. Edgar, Paranormal 3, Rise of the Apes, and 50/50.

Hugo was easily the best film for me though. I loved that damn film. I want a 3D TV someday just to watch that movie.

I put Paranormal 3 because I'm a huge genre guy, most nights I'm watching a horror movie.

Makes sense.  I also checked out V and FlashForward right when they started and was disappointed.  Probably is best to wait and see with these types of shows.
