Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

Some quick things before I turn in (need to wake up for the Rafa/Roger match early, early this morning).
1. Saw The Descendants. Even though this film falls short of my favorite Alexander Payne movie, Sideways, I can see how Clooney is getting the leading actor nod. To be honest, just because of the weak field this year, he may win by default (even though I really hope Dujardin wins).

2. I know a lot of critics are really praising Haywire, but other than Soderbergh's direction and Carano's fight sequences, the film was forgettable.

3. Too busy to get to it, but Fassbender's Shame has been "released."

4. To the four NT'ers who were interested in contributing to my future review site, I'll be sending some updates and asking for suggestions in the next couple weeks.

5. BTW, what are you guys planning for the Oscars?

And to make one last point about Fast Five, my main gripe is that it tried way too hard to be a heist film. When I watch a film from this franchise, I expect to see race sequences galore, story be damned. It was as if Justin Lin was auditioning for an Ocean's 14 film.

Unfortunately cam.. probably why I haven't rushed to watch it yet. Still hoping that a screener will release soon, but given it's limited release, I don't know if I can wait that long.

I understand the desire to transition into heist/action and leave the race world behind... but I would agree that there should have been a little more racing in the last movie. I think they could still tell a heist story, just touch on the racing more.

I am more appreciative of the cast/writers/director all being in on the joke a bit, there was plenty of absurd moments which had to be intentional, as well as moments that were particularly awesome if you followed the series.

I'm gonna dedicate an entire day to all the Fast & Furious movies one day just for the lulz. Just need to track down 2,3 and 5.

You were right, that show is the goods. At first Donna's voice started killing me and I thought it was Whitney 2, but by the end of the first ep.

Kat Dennings and that blonde chick are

, but this might be better than 2 Broke Girls already.

Part of me doesn't want it doing good though, if that means Community gets cancelled.

Never judge cinema by its circlejerks. The Interrupters, universally acclaimed as the doc of the year, is not even a nominee. And guess what? Hoop Dreams, seen as one of the greatest docs of all time and by the same director Steve James, was also not nominated during its year. Award shows are a joke.

I am well aware that these shows are jokes. Kubrick doesn't have an Oscar for directing or writing. There are Plenty of politics. but I'm not just going off the Oscar list. This just isn't a memorable year. Recommend me some movies of the year besides that doc

It'd help if I knew what you have seen.
This has been one of the better years in recent memory to me. Of course, if you go off Oscar lists, you wouldn't know that. More than half of my "top 10" didn't even garner 1 nomination.

I would say support Shame and not pirate but I bet it's damn difficult to find a theater showing it. Here in Chicagoland, there has been, by my count,  a total of 2 in the entire area. Beyond ridiculous but it's mostly due to the dreaded NC-17 rating. I caught it a few weeks back. Really good.

A Separation is finally opening here this weekend. Must-watch film.

I'm in NYC I'm sure I can find it somewhere. But yeah once you get that nc 17 it's tougher.

Didn't bother watching Hoover and I was looking forward to that. The reviews were just too bad. I have a few friends who are really into movies and they haven't recommended me much. I'm basing a lot off that because most years they steer me right.

I spent most this year watching some classics I had been meaning to get around to.

Decendents and melancholia are prob the best ive seen this year. I have to see the artist and woody's movie

Man On A Ledge currently has a 17% based on 30 reviews

I'm just looking forward to a good action film, feel like I haven't watched one in theaters in a while.

Thing looks worse than Glen & Glenda.
Am I the only one really looking forward to Safe House?
nerd.gif

Rather watch The Woman in Black. I had enough of Denzel and Ryan Reynolds has fallen off.

Big year for Sam Worthington, got Man on a Ledge, and Wrath of the Titans out within 3 months of each other.  Bring em to their knees Sam.

Safe House is only a watch cuz we want to see Denzel relive Training Day.

I have Girl/Dragon tattoo for tonight, plus The Immortals??  Is that the 300 clone?  And I should be getting Rum Diary sometime this week.

And still haven't sat down and put on Tinker/Soldier/Spy, need to get to that.

Wrath of the Titans, I just threw up in my mouth.

I heard Immortals was pretty bad. Looked and from reviews I saw, like a 300 clone yeah. Spartacus too, but I hear that's better.

I've been sitting on Dragon Tattoo to watch with people...feel like I'm just building the hype back up for myself

Anyone watch that new Kiefer show? I mean it's from the Heroes guy, so I want a good reason to, lol.

24 was awesome but Idk. Idk how long their gonna be able to keep me entertained with this premise without it growing old. Then again, the constant terrorist attacks were exciting as hell.

Edit: Watching Are You There, Chelsea? love that interaction between Sloan (Chelsea Handler) and waitress with big *******. Idk why show has such negative rantings on IMDB.

I think it's a mix of a lot of things. People who haven't seen it and just hate the commercials (used to be me). People grouping it with Whitney, which they rightfully hate. It having a laugh track. Them not like Chelsea Handler. And it kinda taking Community's spot. I get it...that's why the show surprised me.

When big titty waitress started baby crying. I lost it.

Lawd.

MrO, how many total nominees do we want for best picture?  5-10, however may are worthy?

Well there's gonna be two categories Popcorn Flicks and Serious Movies so about 5 a piece should be good.
Have everyone nominate at least 4 of each and see how the votes work out.

Direction, Writing and Acting is gonna be tricky. Gotta be a lot more exclusive.
I think I'll check award and best of lists instead of ones like the movie one I found.

Anyone else in?

NT Film Awards 2012

For now seeing who wants in/campaigning to get your movie in... (Fast Five

)
~Super Bowl - Nominations
~2 weeks for people to try and watch the movies
~Feb. 18 - Start sending ballots in
~Before the Oscars (Feb. 26) - Results

Best Picture - Drama, Prestige (films like The Artist, Tree of Life, Martha Marcy May Marlene)
Best Movie - Comedy, Horror, Blockbuster, Epics (films like Bridesmaids, Attack the Block, 13 Assassins)
Best Director
Best Screenplay
Best Actor
Best Actress
Best Supporting Actor
Best Supporting Actress

So basically a really concentrated version of the last year of this thread.
All the members have to lobby (short writeup) for one nominee in particular for at least 5 categories, which should be pretty simple.
