But they are replaying the HOF inductions all week on NBATV, so you should be able to see what it was like for his induction, then you can compare to Scottie and Malone's.

Damn Trevor getting no love. Courtney Lee?

You already have Kevin Martin... I wouldn't give up a versatile defensive specialist with an improving perimeter game just for a one dimensional undersized two guard.

Also found this interesting for the people who weren't old enough to live in the times:

On Friday, Lakers owner Jerry Buss will be among the inductees into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

It's not difficult to shower Buss with all kinds of superlatives. But one of his wiliest, most creative and, in retrospect, brilliant moves was inking 22-year-old Magic Johnson to a 25-year, $25 million contract extension in 1981.

M. Haubs of The Painted Area puts Buss' decision into historical context:
Since a $25 million contract for an NBA superstar looks positively quaint in 2010 terms, it's hard to fully explain how stunning the deal was at the time. It was the longest and richest contract in professional sports history when signed - both the length and total dollar value were just monstrous numbers compared to others of the time.

Only two other players - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Moses Malone - were making a $1 million annual salary at the time, and the league minimum was a whopping $65,000. Nolan Ryan was the highest-salaried baseball player at the time, after signing a 4-year, $4.4 million deal in 1979.

Kareem immediately voiced concerns, both publicly and privately to Buss, about whether Magic would be able to remain coachable with such an enormous contract. And given Magic's extremely close off-court relationship with Buss, many Lakers teammates were uncomfortably uncertain about whether Magic had essentially become a member of team management.

Indeed, a major controversy developed just months later, as Magic's public comments were widely perceived as the cause of the firing of head coach Paul Westhead. At 22 years old, Magic's image became that of the classic modern athlete run amok, who had been given too much, too soon, and he was even booed at Lakers home games for a time. Of course, the Lakers went on to win the 1982 NBA championship under Pat Riley, and the Magic-Westhead controversy has long since been relegated to Lakers history.

Like that deal for all the teams except Houston...I figure it was more about getting out of Ariza's contract than anything.

'Melo to Houston?

Interesting.
One of the few trades that makes sense for all teams involved.

New Jersey wants to compete for a playoff spot immediately so they get Murphy for a season while they wait for Favors, Indiana finally gets a PG to run their team, New Orleans gets a young, athletic swingman to run with CP3 (I think they could've gotten more for Collison though) and Houston gets another SG since they're deep at SF already.

Not really for Houston though.

What you really want Shane or Chase starting?

Lee coming off the bench is that much better for their team?

I'd much rather have

Brooks/Martin/Ariza/Scola/Yao
Lowry/Chase/Battier/Hill/Miller

than

Brooks/Martin/Battier/Scola/Yao
Lowry/Lee/Chase/Hill/Miller

Ariza is very versatile and can defend 1-3 positions. What can Lee offer that is substantially better? Shooting? Ariza can impact the game much more than Lee can.

Other than to save a couple mil, not sure why the Rockets would trade Ariza for Lee. What is Morey up to?

Still would rather have CP3 over Melo on the Rockets tho.

After reading some more, it's a bit of a salary dump.

And I would honestly rather have option B than A.

Battier is ollllld. He's not a starter anymore. You'll see.

Trev aint gonna do much in NO's with that squad. He shines best when the team already has like 2 or 3 designated scoring threats. He would have fit in perfectly with Houston and a healthy Yao/Kevin Martin.
Sources: Four-team trade in works
ESPN.com

Four NBA teams are on the verge of a five-player trade that will send Trevor Ariza to the New Orleans Hornets and Darren Collison to the Indiana Pacers, two league sources said.

In the proposed deal, the Houston Rockets will send Ariza to the Hornets, who in turn will send Collison and James Posey to the Pacers.

The Pacers will send Troy Murphy to the New Jersey Nets. And the Nets will send Courtney Lee to the Rockets.

According to the sources the Rockets, Hornets, Pacers and Nets are in advanced discussions on the deal and the principals involved are set. The teams were ironing out details, including Posey's trade kicker and possible cash payments.

The deal, if completed, could fulfill some long-term needs for the Hornets, Pacers and Nets, as well as provide needed salary relief for the Rockets.

For the Hornets, while moving Collison leaves the team without a credible backup for Chris Paul, the addition of Ariza gives them a young, athletic wing entering his prime.

The Hornets are hoping that the addition of Ariza quiets the complaints address Paul's concerns about the team's commitment winning by showing that they're willing to spend money to get better. Ariza signed a six year, $35 million dollar deal with the Rockets last summer.

For the Pacers, landing Collison gives them the young starting point guard they've been looking for and adds another piece to a young core of players including Danny Granger, Roy Hibbert and promising rookies Paul George and Lance Stephenson.

The Pacers did take on the last two years and $13 million of Posey's contract, but the deal also sliced another $4 million off the team's overall payroll.

In Murphy, the Nets get the veteran big man that new coach Avery Johnson has been coveting. Murphy is also on the last year of his contract, which could make him an important trading chip for the Nets at the 2011 trade deadline.

For the Rockets, aside from acquiring Lee, the move is largely a salary dump. This summer the Rockets spent a lot of cash signing Luis Scola, Kyle Lowry and Brad Miller to free agent contracts and their payroll ballooned to $81 million. Before the trade, the team was bracing for a $10 million-plus luxury tax hit. The deal would save them $28 million on the life of the contracts and $10 million this season, including luxury tax considerations.

You never want Ariza to do too much. Word to his handles... Making Ron Artest look like Magic Johnson out there. Don't do it Morey!

NO pretty much trading for a younger Posey who's contract is about the same and longer. He will look good with CP3 tho. I just feel you can get a lot more back with Collison. What a waste.

Trev aint gonna do much in NO's with that squad. He shines best whenthe team already has like 2 or 3 designated scoring threats.
Chris Paul. One.

David West. Two.

Marcus Thornton. Three.

Trevor Ariza isn't going to do much in New Orleans because Trevor Ariza isn't very good.

At least he defends...

Thornton? Na.

If Thornton is your third wheel you're in trouble.

Trevor isn't a star by any means but he would have fit in with that Houston lineup perfectly. He's not going to create any offense for you but he can still keep defenders honest with his shot and is always active moving without the ball.

Courtney Lee had a disappointing year with the Nets.. I'm guessing Favors isn't ready so they're going to try and get Murphy.

The Pacers are negotiating a buyout with T.J. Ford's agent on the $8.5 million owed the point guard this season, league sources tell Y!.
