Official San Francisco 49ers Off-Season Thread (5-7): Let's get ready for the Draft!

Speaking of Holmgren..

http://www.nbcbayarea.com/topics?topic=Mike+Holmgren
Mike Holmgren, the ex-Seahawks coach who once upon a time served the 49ers as Bill Walsh's quarterbacks coach and George Siefert's offensive coordinator, got teased a bit when he said how he's spend his retirement. When asked what he'd do after finishing his time with the Seahawks, Holmgren said he wanted to open a bookstore and serve muffins.

Looks like that retirement plan is on the shelf.

Holmgren told Seattle's KJR 950, "I think I want to work again. Yeah, absolutely," Tuesday morning in a live interview still available online. "We're going to take the year off, then after next season we'll see. I plan to go back to work. Now where and in what capacity, that is pretty vague. But I know this. I want to do something. That's pretty much a given.

Holmgren made the remarks in an interview today with Seattle personality Dave "Softy" Mahler. You can see how Mahler got that nickname when you hear the kind of interview questions he asks. He's so easy on the former Seattle coach that at one point Holmgren's answer to Softy's question is, "The next big challenge that I'm gonna attack this afternoon is to wash all of (his granddaughter) Emma's clothes. And I understand I have to separate the dark clothes from the light clothes."

Interestingly, Holmgren sounds happy with either a head coaching or front office position in 2010. "The wear and tear on your body and your mind and your soul are quite different in the two jobs," he says. "There's a tremendous draw being on the sideline and playing that chess game on Sundays. But also, there's a pull that it takes."

Niners Nation points out that Holmgren-to-San Francisco enthusiasts aren't necessarily calling for Coach Singletary to go. Holmgren could be brought in as the true "football guy" the 49ers' front office currently lacks, with Singletary continuing to build the team as head coach. GM Scot McCloughan is your logical fall guy from the pecking order in that scenario, but one could also imagine McCloughan creating a new position for Holmgren involving terms like "consultant", "personnel", or "quality control", and thereby retaining his own job.

Holmgren gives no indication he'd be interested in a position this coming 2009 season. But he did have some insights on this offseason's "un-retirement" situation with Brett Favre, whom he coached in two Super Bowls.

Holmgren ran into Favre and his family recently when visiting Disney World. "We chatted for awhile, and I teased him a little bit about (retirement)," Holmgren recalls., "I said 'You don't have anything to prove to anybody, this is it', and he goes. 'Yeah. I'm done'."

To which Holmgren replied, "'Well you told me that four times.'"

49ers Sign Draft Picks McKillop, Jean-Francois
May 14, 2009

The San Francisco 49ers announced today that they have signed fifth-round draft choice LB Scott McKillop and seventh-round draft choice DE Ricky Jean-Francois to four-year contracts. The players become the second and third 2009 draft picks to sign contracts with their NFL teams this offseason. Lions QB Matthew Stafford signed his contract prior to the start of the draft.

"It says a lot about these young men that they have made it a priority to get their contract negotiations out of the way early," said 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan. "Now they have the ability to focus solely on helping to make this team better and starting their professional careers off on the right foot. The cooperation we received from their agents was tremendous."

McKillop (6-1, 244) was twice honored as the Big East Defensive Player of the Year in 2007 and 2008. The two-time All-America and All-Big East selection finished his four-year Pitt career with 345 tackles, 28.5 tackles for a loss, and eight sacks. In 48 career games (25 starts), McKillop also posted 13 passes defensed, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and three interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. A 2008 semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award, given annually to the country's best defensive player, he led the Big East in tackles (137), ranking 10th in the nation.

Jean-Francois (6-3, 295) played in 25 games (9 starts) and posted 56 tackles, 5.5 sacks, three passes defensed, three fumble recoveries and a forced fumble during his LSU career. In 2008, he played in 11 games (6 starts) at defensive tackle, recording 20 tackles, two sacks, two passes defensed and a fumble recovery. In 2007, Jean Francois started two games and was named Most Outstanding Defensive Player in the BCS National Championship Game, registering six tackles, a half sack and a blocked field goal, in LSU's win over Ohio State.

McKillop and Jean-Francois are the first of the 49ers seven 2009 draft picks to sign contracts.

May 12, 2009
The San Francisco 49ers and the York family announced the creation of the Edward DeBartolo Sr. 49ers Hall of Fame. Dedicated to Edward DeBartolo Sr., the patriarch of one of the most storied franchises in all of professional sports, the Hall of Fame has been established to recognize players, coaches and executives who have made exceptional contributions to the organization.

"As someone who was raised alongside 49ers legends," said team President Jed York, "I am honored to be announcing the creation of the Edward DeBartolo Sr. 49ers Hall of Fame. This exclusive group will be comprised of those who have made our franchise what it is today."

As a prerequisite for induction, all 49ers Hall of Fame candidates must have displayed one or more of the following qualifications: outstanding production and performance on the field, key contributions to the team's success, and/or the embodiment of the spirit and essence of the San Francisco 49ers.

Those members of the 49ers family who have had their jersey numbers already retired by the organization or have been selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, have been automatically enshrined in the 49ers Hall of Fame by the organization. A plaque with their likeness will be displayed prominently in the Hall of Fame at Candlestick Park. The initial members of the Hall of Fame will be recognized formally during Alumni Weekend on October 11, 2009, when the 49ers host the Atlanta Falcons.

The following alumni qualify for automatic enshrinement in the

I mean, if I have to miss a game for one reason or another, or someone in my group cant attend, I will definitely ask my NT Niner family if anyone isinterested.

Looks like we had a bad first day.

The 49ers might not be in midseason form - and that's OK because it is the month of May. But coach Mike Singletary is exhibiting mid-November intensity.
Singletary stopped practice early in the 49ers' organized team activity today to implore the team to get its act together. After practice he gathered the team around to deliver another impassioned pep talk.

"We lost a day," Singletary said of the practice session that did not meet his approval.

When asked about what he didn't like, Singletary said, "I don't even want to get started. It was not good."

--Linebacker Jeff Ulbrich is fully on board with Singletary's demands. "He's got a standard," Ulbrich said. "It's frustrating at times because guys are trying to adapt. It's not quite there yet. There are still some guys who are not fully on-board. But if you don't adjust and starting doing it, you're going to be out of here."

Ulbrich wants to make sure he's not out of here. That is why he accepted a pay cut this offseason from a scheduled salary of $2.23 million to $950,000. Ulbrich's goal is to do what's necessary for him to earn a roster spot this season, which would make him a rare 10-year player for the team. Ulbrich was very realistic in agreeing to the pay reduction.

"I was getting paid too much for what I'd be contributing," he said.

Ulbrich's role will primarily be on special teams. That is why he dropped 10 points from 245 to 235.

"When I've been watching film of special teams, the guys who stand out are the guys who are really fast," he said.

--The 49ers have waived defensive back Jimmy Williams, who was out of the league last season after being a second-round pick of the Falcons in 2006. The 49ers took a chance to see if Williams could succeed at safety. The answer, they've figured, is no.

"Right now, we just felt it was the best thing to do," Singletary said. "It is a numbers game. We feel good about the guys that we have and wanted to give it a look and see how it would work out, and just felt like, 'You know what, right now is the best time to make that decision.'"

--With Williams out of the picture, Singletary said there's a "strong possibility" second-year player Reggie Smith will remain at safety.

--The QB competition continues. Shaun Hill was probably a shade more accurate on his passes. Alex Smith is throwing the ball pretty well. A year ago he was being held back during these offseason camps. This year, he wants to get his arm into training-camp form earlier. Singletary said he believes Smith looks healthy.

But when asked specifically about the play of QBs, Singletary - not surprisingly - said, "We've got a ways to go."

--Safety Curtis Taylor, a seventh-rounder, became the third 49ers draft pick to sign. Taylor signed a four-year deal worth approximately $1.8 million with a signing bonus of $59,880. Linebacker Scott McKillop and defensive end Ricky Jean-Francois signed last week.

--The only veterans who are not here are receiver Isaac Bruce and safety Mark Roman. Singletary said he has never wavered that he wants Roman on the team this season. Roman was given permission in the offseason to seek a trade after he lost his starting job to Dashon Goldson.

Roman underwent surgery this offseason to remove bone spurs in his ankle. He rehabs regularly at the 49ers' practice facility, Singletary said.

--Two rookies are unable to participate because of a rule that prevents them from practicing with the team until graduation ceremonies are held at their respective schools. The two players are: offensive tackle Alex Boone (Ohio State) and defensive end Pannel Egboh (Stanford). Also, kicker/punter Alex Romero is not here.

--The following players are here but are being held out with injuries: safety Michael Lewis, cornerback Shawntae Spencer, defensive end Ray McDonald, receivers Arnaz Battle and Michael Crabtree. Offensive tackle Marvel Smith worked in individual drills but did not take part in team work.

--The 49ers were one of a reported nine organizations that opted out of the pension plan for non-player employees. Niners offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye is the president of the NFL Coaches Association. He recently released a statement "to express the desire in obtaining a unified pension plan that has portability and carries vestment from team to team."

When Singletary was asked if this might be an issue in the future in luring assistant coaches to the 49ers, he answered:

"There is so much to that, that whole thing - who's doing the pension plan? Who's not doing the pension plan? To what degree are they doing the pension plan? I think we're going to let all that stuff work out. We've talked about it as coaches. The most important thing we have is the focus on these players out here and getting team ready to play. All the other stuff will work itself out.

"We talked about it as a staff, and certainly there are teams around the league that respond one way or the other. Any time you have 20 coaches, you're never going to have everybody saying, 'Hey, way to go. Great.' Everybody has their opinion. But at the same time, we all understand that it's all about winning. We do have a pension in place, it's just a bit different than what we had before. So we just go forward with that."

After entering the league as a promising cornerback prospect, Jimmy Williams signed with the 49ers just hoping to resurrect his career.

No such luck. Williams didn't even last until training camp.

The 49ers waived the former second-round pick of the Falcons on Monday, the first day of organized team activities in Santa Clara.

The move might also open the door a little wider for the return of Mark Roman. Last season's starting free safety has been granted to seek a trade but remains on the 49ers roster.

"We've talked to Mark and let him know he's important to what we're trying to do,'' Singletary said. "There was never a time that we said, 'We don't want Mark. He doesn't matter to us.' We want him and we're very interested in keeping him. And, that's not something that's a secret to him."

Roman, 32, had off-season procedure to remove bone spurs and still has a pin in his ankle, Singletary said.

For now, releasing Williams means a chance for second-year defensive back Reggie Smith to press for more playing time. Asked if the transaction meant Smith would stick at safety, Singletary replied: "It means that's a strong possibility."

Williams, 25, played for the Atlanta Falcons from 2006-07, including seven starts, but was not in the NFL last season.

The 49ers first session of the four-day OTAs did not go well. Just 43 minutes into practice, Singletary stopped the action, gathered the team around him and blistered them for their lack of focus.
When practice ended about an hour later, Singletary lit into the group again with a long - and loud - tongue-lashing.

What went wrong?

"Everything. Everything. I don't even want to get started because I don't have that much time,'' Singletary told reporters.

He added: "The things that we have in mind, this is not it. … We lost a day today."

Singletary reiterated that there is no timetable for his decision on a quarterback. "Hopefully, sooner than later,'' he said.

Recently acquired right tackle Marvel Smith made his debut in practice and participated in individual drills. Smith is recovering from back surgery

# # #

LSU safety Curtis Taylor, the 49ers' seventh-round pick, signed a four-year contract, making him the third member of the draft class to sign. Linebacker Scott McKillop and defensive end Ricky Jean-Francios signed last week.

# # #

The 49ers are one of nine NFL teams to opt out of the league-run pension plans for non-player employees. 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye, who serves as the president of the NFL Coaches Association Executive Committee, reacted to the news by releasing a statement on behalf of the committee that "respectfully urges the NFL owners to address our pension concerns so that coaches can continue to do their jobs without anxiety toward the future."

On Monday, Singletary was asked whether the 49ers' pension situation might make it harder for the team to put together a staff in certain years. Singletary acknowledged that there are differences of opinion on his staff and added: "We do have a pension in place, it's just a little bit different than what we had before. So, we'll just go forward with that."

Matthew Barrows, of the Sacramento Bee, reports San Francisco 49ers QB Alex D. Smith was critical of WR Isaac Bruce for his absence from organized team activities despite being uninjured. "You can't show up in the fall and expect to be winning games," Smith said. "I think, especially with where we're at, it takes everybody to be here. We've got to push it right now. You can't just show up and expect to win games in this league - at any level, that doesn't happen."

I agree.

It was prolly gonna be Harris' last run as a starting DB for the 9ers this year anyway. What sucks the most is that Harris and Clements matched up wellagainst the Cards. T.Brown or Spencer is going to have to step up.
