Official San Francisco 49ers Off-Season Thread (5-7): Let's get ready for the Draft!

That made me laugh for some reason

So I wonder if they change their minds if Stafford or Sanchez fall in our laps, do we take them? I see some mock drafts floating around that Maclin could beour guy.
Not really sold on him, being that he came from a spread offense (we're looking to ground & pound.) He seems like a Ted Ginn caliber player or a RandleEl at best.
Not the #1 reciever the Niners are looking for, if Sing didnt rule out Mike Vick, I wonder where he stands with Ocho Cinco or Boldin (despite Boldin changinghis mind
on the long term deal with Arizona. He seems a little far fetched.) I could see Cincy letting him go for at best a 2nd Rd pick. Maybe something conditionalnext year.)
Just curious as to what your thoughts are on that.

Oh lord no.

No need to invest more $ into a project first round QB, when we have bigger needs on this team.

I'm on the Shaun Hill bandwagon.

F F F F F F F F F F F the 49ers organization!!!!! I just got my season ticket renewal stuff in the mail and these son of a %*+#%#$ raised my ticket prices 20dollars for the 2nd consecutive season!!! How in the blue hell does a team have the balls to raise prices 2 years in a row when 1) we are in the worst economiccrisis we have been in for almost a century and 2) when they continually put the same trash out on the field. If we made it to the NFC Championship 2 years ina row....sure. But to not be a .500 team and STILL raise prices? G T F O H!!! Absolutely ridiculous. F the Yorks. We better make the damn playoffs this yearwith only the Seahawks and the Rams to worry about. Im pissed right now. This is a joke.

/ rant.

Lets break this down. Andy Lee makes 1.183 mil a year. He is a very good punter. Hes not the best punter in the NFL, but hes definitely in the top 5 or so. Solets look at Lechler. He is probably the best punter in the NFL, and gets paid the most. Lechler makes 4 million a year. We all know this is a ridiculousamount of money for a punter, but he deserves top punter money. So lets just say Lechler deserves 2.5 mil a year. That might be a bit high, but lets go withthat. So we've established Lee isnt as good as Lechler, but is very good. He wants a raise from 1.183 mil. Would it be unrealistic to say he deserves 1.75?

I say give him his raise.....as long as we arent using Lechler's contract as a measuring stick, he should get his money. He has been one of our bestplayers for a few years now.

as sad as the story is, your post has nothing to do with the 49ers and you already posted it in the general forum.

The 49ers currently have approximately $25 million in salary-cap space with free agency set to begin at 9:01 p.m. (PT) tomorrow night.

Don't expect anything memorable like a year ago when this blog posted a report about the first free agent to switch teams. The post was time-stamped at 9:27 p.m. Teams -- and players speaking to the media -- will probably be a little more discreet this year.

Here is a rundown of the 49ers' scheduled free agents:

Unrestricted free agents

The 49ers have exclusive negotiating rights to these players up to the opening of free agency. Then, these players would be free to sign with any team.

LB Takeo Spikes The 49ers are having "positive" talks with Spikes. There appears to be a strong chance he will return.

WR Bryant Johnson The sides are not negotiating. GM Scot McCloughan said he feels good about the depth in the draft. The club wants to add speed on the outside through free agency or the draft. If Johnson lingers and lingers and lingers and the 49ers have not found anyone, they could revisit the situation.

RB DeShaun Foster See above. Foster finds himself in the same situation as Johnson. The 49res figure to add someone in the draft to fill this role. McCloughan said there are a lot of good running backs available to help share the load with Frank Gore.

KR/PR Allen Rossum He is 33 years old, but he remains an option for the 49ers after putting together a solid season.

DT Ronald Fields He did not make much of an impact, but nose tackles are hard to find. He will probably get more money than you'd expect on the open market.

QB J.T. O'Sullivan The 49ers are moving forward with Shaun Hill and, presumably, Alex Smith. Not surprisingly, coach Mike Singletary said O'Sullivan does not fit in the team's plans right now.

CB Donald Strickland The 49ers really like Strickland, and he there seems to be no good reason why he would not return.

DE Roderick Green He had a disappointing season, and then got into hot water recently in his hometown. This is a spot the 49ers will look to upgrade.

TE Billy Bajema It's getting to the point Bajema is getting a little too expensive for his role. He made $927,000 this season as a blocking specialist.

OT Damane Duckett They've invested a lot of time after conversion from defensive line to offense. They might as well give him one final shot.

TE Sean Ryan He did a pretty good job as an H-back/fullback type late in the season, but there is no rush to re-sign him.

QB Jamie Martin He will not be back.

Restricted free agents

The 49ers do not have any restricted free agents because in 2006, the team began doing four-year contracts on draft picks. So the 49ers won't have another restricted free agent from an original draft pick.

Exclusive rights free agents

This player has fewer than three years of accrued NFL service and the 49ers own exclusive negotiating rights.

FB Zak Keasey He'll likely be kept around to compete for a job, though the new power-running-game offense does not exactly play to his strengths.

* * *

Under contract, but issues looming . . .

QB Alex Smith He is scheduled to earn $9.625 million in base salary with a scheduled cap figure on the books of $12.291M. Offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye has already sent him pages from the playbook. The difference of Smith's scheduled base salary and his new base salary will be the cap savings realized. (If released, he would account for a $5.333 million cap hit, thus creating nearly $7M in cap space.)

OT Jonas Jennings The 49ers plan to release him at some point. Right now, he is still rehabbing his cranky shoulder. Jennings is scheduled to earn $4.2 million in base salary. His cap figure currently stands at $6.592M. If released, he'll account for a $3.484 million cap hit, but it'll create more than $3.1M in additional cap space.

i'm seeing some mocks of mark sanchez being drafted by us @ 10.

i just can't imagine this happening, get a QB via FA.

also, a lot of quality players are being released ...

We're closer to 30+ of cap room during this offseason. I'm hopin we can work something out with Alex so he can come back and start for us in 09! But Iwould love Mark Sanchez..Why? Because he's Mexican...I know that has nothing to do with him as a player, I'd just love for a Mexican QB to play for us
pimp.gif
..On a serious note I do not want us to use our pick on a QB or WR because we have bigger needs. How high is Aaron Curry projected to go?Top 3?

Damn, I wish we could have Timmy Chang...I know that has nothing to do with him as a player, I'd just love for a Chinese QB to play for us

j/m.

I don't want Sanchez and Hill starts over Smith (that should be a given though)

I hope Smith will start. I've read that Raye's offense will be similar to what Norv ran when he was here, which fits Smith well. I know you guys hateSmith, and have lost faith but I still think he has the potential to be a good QB.

but cause of curry doing so well in the combine, ive actually seen him going 1st to the lions - but hes def top 3.

Not trying to threadjack, but rumor has it that the Jaguars are getting new uniforms as well.

The Niners have classic uniforms, I hope the changes are minor.
