[h1]Lakers forward Ron Artest trying to regain his touch[/h1]Gingerly, Ron Artest wobbled over to the basketball rack Thursday and picked up a ball, blinking as he began to dribble.

He began to shoot, measuring each shot. He walked to another basket and began the same process, each time seemingly searching for his touch.

The Lakers had said earlier that Artest participated in some on-court basketball work during practice Thursday, but that he experienced dizziness and was forced to curtail his activity.

Artest has sat out the last three games after a suffering a concussion Christmas night from a fall down a flight of stairs outside his home in Brentwood.

The Lakers play the Sacramento Kings tonight at Staples Center, but Coach Phil Jackson said that he was "very doubtful" that Artest would play.

Artest didn't speak with the media, preferring to get up extra shots instead.

But the team said he saw a neurologist again Thursday and will see another one today.

"He's pretty stiff in the shoulders and stuff," Jackson said.

Missing Artest

Since Artest has been down, the Lakers' defense has suffered.

The Lakers twice gave up 118 points -- season-highs -- and lost one of the three games Artest missed, and had to go into double-overtime to defeat the Kings last Saturday.

"We miss him, he's a starter," Jackson said. "We miss him, but . . . the bench is adjusting."

It's more than Artest's one-on-one defensive skills that the Lakers have missed.

He is averaging 1.3 steals a game, but Artest also is averaging 4.0 assists, second-best on the team.

"Not even just because he's . . . supposedly our best defensive player in terms of his physical presence, but his mentality is also infectious," point guard Derek Fisher said.

"Just his mentality in terms of playing physically, boxing out, going after guys, scrapping for loose balls, those are things that you can't replace. . . . [Those are] some of the intangible things that Ron brings to our game. We're definitely missing those things."

Lineup adjustment?

The thought first came to Jackson back in July, the idea of playing a big lineup.

Jackson could envision playing 6-foot-6 Kobe Bryant, 6-10 Lamar Odom, 6-7 Artest and seven-footers Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol all at the same time.

In the last three games, because Artest has been out, Jackson has started a big frontcourt of Odom, Bynum and Gasol, but it hasn't produce the results Jackson would like.

"It's gotten off to some pretty slow starts," Jackson said.

So, would he consider changing his big lineup?

"I might," Jackson said. "I'll think about those things [Thursday] night."

The leader

After dropping 44 points on the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night, Bryant has overtaken Denver's Carmelo Anthony as the NBA's scoring leader at 30.4 points a game to Anthony's 30.

Bryant has had seven games this season in which he has scored 40 points or more. Last season, he scored 40 or more four times.

"I'm just going to work," Bryant said. "At this point in my career, me scoring 40 points is just a luxury for us to have. It's not something that we have to do for our survival or anything like that. It's just I can do it."

Like Al3xis said,if he could score 100, he would have done it by now. C'mon, we know he went through thatphase where he was Shaq-less, not a title contender, and he put up CRAZY numbers. If there was ever a time where he would have thought before a game'I'm doing it; I'm going for the century mark', it would have been that time, and if it was going to happen during any time in hs career, itwould have been during that time.

Saying "The reason he doesn't have a 100-pt game is because he's not '100 points in agame' good" shouldn't make you less of afan.

Yes, I know that 81 point game could have been 100. I know about the bad Odom passes and the missed free throws and blah, blah, blah.

Once this Laker team is 100% healthy and hit's their stride where everything is clicking for them on offense & the defense the Lakers will be anightmare for the rest of the league !

What I mean by this is: Everyone back from injuries: Luke, Ron Ron.

Seeing this Laker team play defense we know they can and they have shown they can play.

Ron Ron: getting more familiar and comfortable with his role in the triangle offense.

Drew: getting back to being a force & presence in the post, and getting back to averaging a double double.

Bench: somehow improving and getting back to bench mob status like they were at 2 seasons ago.

Phil Jackson is the best coach for a reason and I really believe he will get this years Laker team in that mode by the time the playoffs are about to start.

"He gets motivated, activated by injuries," the Lakers coach said Friday. "It's like saying he can't do something and then he has to prove he can do it. It's just one of those things about him that is unique."

Bryant has been bothered by an avulsion fracture in his right index finger that has forced him to adjust his shooting style, putting more pressure on the ball with his thumb instead of his injured finger. He also has a strained right elbow.

Bryant has taken 23 or more shots in 11 consecutive games.

Bad news for the Lakers: It can distort their share-the-ball triangle offense. Good news for them: Bryant has been shooting with decent efficiency, making 47.6% over the 11-game span. He is a 45.6% career shooter.

Bryant had 39 points on 13-for-27 shooting Friday against the Sacramento Kings, including the winning three-pointer at the buzzer.

Another viewpoint

In the never-ending analysis of Andrew Bynum's decreased productivity, Jackson offered another angle, a reminder that the Lakers' center is a young 22.

"We have to remember he only played like 30 games of high school. Some kids play 100 games in high school," Jackson said. "He really has a limited amount of experience. His first year was pretty much a wash here. Then he has two injury situations that go on and limited how much he could actually participate."

Bynum has gone 21 consecutive games without a double-double.

All-Star envy?

Pau Gasol is fourth among Western Conference forwards in All-Star voting, trailing Carmelo Anthony, Dirk Nowitzki and Tim Duncan, but Jackson doesn't care. In fact, he seems to be losing faith in the voting system.

"I think Houston might have all their players in the top five at every position," Jackson said. "That Chinese fan group, they vote for the Houston team because of Yao Ming and their relationship to Houston. It's all skewed."

Jackson's only partly correct. Tracy McGrady is second among West guards, but Aaron Brooks is sixth among guards, Trevor Ariza is sixth among West forwards and Luis Scola is seventh among forwards.

Jackson had one more complaint.

" Allen Iverson, Tracy McGrady . . . they haven't even played this year," he said. "Allen's played a few games so it's kind of askew to suggest that the voting is something to count on."

Iverson has played only 11 games but is second among East guards in the voting.

More NBA thoughts

With the new year officially in gear, Jackson was asked to list his surprise teams so far this season.

He said Washington was the most disappointing -- "I think everybody was really kind of saying Washington was going to be the sleeper this year in the East" -- but he wasn't ready to call Portland a disappointment.

"It's kind of shocking, I guess, to see that many kids injured," he said.

His most improved team? The Phoenix Suns.

"I don't think people expected them to rejuvenate [to] what they were before the Shaq [O'Neal] trade, to come back and play that kind of basketball," Jackson said. "They've done a good job."

Man I dont know about you guys but I really can't stand listening to Joel Myers call Laker games on TV !

He seriously puts me to sleep and listening to him call 2 of the Lakers games when Kobe hit the game winner against Miami, and the Kings tonight I was reallydisappointed how he called those game winning shots. It's like I don't know something is missing or he isn't so enthusiastic on thoseshots.Especially during the Heat game when Kobe hit the game winner. Mike Breen's call compared to Joel Myers is a whole lot better.

Gotta give tons of props for Kobe hitting another shot at the buzzer. We all know this guy is absolutely amazing...

As for the team, let us please play a FULL 48 minutes against the Mavs on Sunday, and not be playing the game of the on/off switch that we have been doing thepast couple of games.
