Official Jazz thread

Ever listened to piano jazz on NPR? Marian Mcpartland passed recently, she has interviewed so many influential musicians throughout that program. She'll def be missed

I just saw she passed. I used to listen to nothing but NPR when I had the radio on. Don't listen to the station as much as I used to.

RIP. She lived a long fruitful life & I will miss listening to her. There was a good doc I saw on NPR on her earlier this year. Not sure where you can see it now.

The link below is NPR.com's tribute to her.

Cannonball Adderly - Capricorn (Pete Rock & CL Smooth - In The House)

Love this song & the Pete Rock & CL jawn that sampled it...

I've posted her in here before. Here's Nikki Yanofsky's newest single. Still amazed about her voice. Listening to her talk she sounds like any other teenager, but when she sings it sounds like a grown woman :lol
Def buying her album whenever it comes out

If anyone has HBO, Wynton Marsalis has a docu-show about him mentoring some young cats called A Youngarts Masterclass kicking off it's third season. Trailer below. I've seen him lecture a number of times as well as seen him play both jazz & classical several times over the years.

I always thought he came off as arrogant & bougie, but he's seemed to mellow over the years. He's always been impeccably dressed though, which I've always appreciated. This season looks pretty good as he mentors kids from National YoungArts Foundation in preparation of their performance at the Lincoln Center.

Dates & times for the show -

HBO playdates: Sept. 11 (2:00 p.m.), 14 (11:00 a.m.), 17 (6:15 a.m.), 20 (10:30 a.m.) and 29 (8:30 a.m.).

HBO Family: Sept. 15 (10:45 p.m.), 18 (11:30 p.m.), 23 (8:30 p.m.), 24 (3:55 a.m.) and 27 (6:30 p.m.), and Oct. 6 (5:25 a.m.), 19 (6:25 p.m.) and 20 (5:20 a.m.)

Wynton Marsalis - April In Paris & In The Court Of King Oliver

Had to post some 'Nawlins flavor with his pops Ellis on the keys...

Wynton Marsalis - Joe Cool's Blues

Title track for the album. One of my favorites from Wynton. Easily his most affable & playable album. A master playing it straight & forward.

Miles Davis - Flamenco Sketches

Some great rainy day music to chill around the house. Sending some emails off with my trusty dog (my furry daughter) asleep under the desk.

Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage

Christian Scott - Isadora

Dexter Gordon - Don't Explain

Went and saw Blue Jasmine tonight. Woody Allen really loves those old standards

John Coltrane - Summertime

Happy Birthday in what would've been your 87th. RIP. Thank you for your beautiful music.

Damn, haven't been in here in a minute.  Will be back to go thru the tunes tomorrow...

Until then...

John Coltrane - Equinox

I loooove this song... Posted this before but gotta post again...

Kyle Eastwood - From Rio To Havana (live at Abbey Road Studios)

Nice posts up there Wes.

Kyle is an amazing bassist. Has done a lot of work for his father. Can you guess who his father is? Not only is he a dead ringer for his old man, but his last name should give it away...

Audio of his pops playing twinkling the ivories.

Charles Mingus - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat & Pithecanthropus Erectus, & Hatian Fight Song

My favorite Mingus songs... He saw music so differently from everyone in his generation.

Robert Glasper - Let It Ride (ft. Norah Jones)

New from his upcoming release. Lovin' it...

Cannonball Adderley - Autumn Leaves

Branford Marsalis - As Summer Slips Into Autumn

Just a heads up, there's a great documentary series on Netflix right now called Ken Burns: Jazz.

Spans jazz from its inception to its current incarnation.  Really, really well done, highly recommended for anyone who knows about, or wants to learn about, jazz.
