Scutaro Prefers The Dodgers And Red Sox
By Mike Axisa [November 28 at 1:13pm CST]

1:13pm: In a slight correction to his article, Bastian says that the Mariners and Rangers have contacted the 34-year-old, but not necessarily about playing third base (via Twitter).

11:32am: Free agent Marco Scutaro is said to prefer the Dodgers and Red Sox because they give him the best chance to make the postseason, according to a report by Augusto Cardenas of Diaro Panorama, which was passed along by MLB.com's Jordan Bastian. Geoff Baker of The Seattle Times has a quote from Scutaro on the situation:

"Boston is interested, like the Dodgers, Seattle and Texas,'' Scutaro said. "They have just called to say they have interest, but they haven't made an offer yet.

"The Dodgers want me to play second base, shortstop in Boston, and there are other teams who have called to play third. Although not close the doors, I would rather be between short and second.''

Bastian adds that Scutaro hasn't ruled out a return to Toronto, though the Jays will offer the Type-A free agent arbitration so they can receive two draft picks if he heads elsewhere. Baker mentions that the Mariners and Texas have contacted Scutaro about playing third, which makes you wonder what would happen with Michael Young.

Not too familiar with Scutaro.

He is a "serviceable" shortstop. His numbers were pretty good in 2009 though you wonder if he was trying to play for a new contract with Toronto(that they ultimately didn't give him).

He always seemed to figure out a way to get on 1B as a leadoff hitter.

Scutaro is a good player. Solid. No eye popping numbers. Not a player you can build a team around. But he is a player that you guys would like. He was a fanfavorite in Oakland, and is a fun player to root for (Eric Byrnes, Dustin Pedroia type hustle/heart player).

Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt claims to be low on cash, which raises new questions as to whether his team is financially stable.

According to the LA Times, McCourt responded to the latest filing in his divorce proceedings that his personal checking account was as low as $167,000. The attorney for Jamie McCourt countered by saying that there should be "serious concern" about Frank McCourt's ability to run a team.

Frank McCourt's attorney says otherwise, so the situation remains unclear. Either way, it seems that the Dodgers will have a hard time making a big-ticket free agent purchase.
Arbitration for Hudson?
We've heard speculation for weeks on just how much the McCourt divorce saga will impact the ability of the Los Angeles Dodgers to conduct financial business this offseason.

Some of the answers will come Tuesday when the Dodgers must decide which eligible players will be offered arbitration. A test case will be second baseman Orlando Hudson, who is likely to sign elsewhere.

Jon Weisman writes in an LA Times blog that "if the Dodgers are so risk averse as to try to avoid the infinitesimal chance that Hudson would cost them another $8 million or so, that's a bad sign." Weisman thinks it's a no-brainer to offer O-Dog arbitration since the Dodgers will get the services of a quality player for one season or end up with draft picks.

The Los Angeles Dodgers were not afraid to open their checkbooks last winter, handing out short-term but still lucrative deals to Manny Ramirez and Rafael Furcal. That should change this time around.

Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times reports that the Dodgers' payroll of $100 million could decrease next season. While some bloated contracts will come off the books, a group of core players such as Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier and James Loney will be eligible for arbitration.

Some agents told the Times the Dodgers won't be "serious players" in the free-agent market because of the McCourt divorce proceedings.
Dodgers Make No Arb Offers To Free Agents
By Tim Dierkes [December 1 at 3:13pm CST]

The Dodgers aren't offering arbitration to any of their free agents, team spokesman Josh Rawitch told Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times. They've got Type As with Orlando Hudson and Randy Wolf, and Type Bs with Guillermo Mota, Jon Garland, Ronnie Belliard, Vicente Padilla, and Will Ohman.

Wolf in particular seemed a lock to receive an offer. It's difficult to understand why the Dodgers chose not to. Oddly enough, Wolf has avoided an arb offer for two years running despite being worthy both times. Surely he's not complaining; he's now more attractive to other teams. Ditto for Hudson.
Scully to return for 61st season
Comment Email Print Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Dodgers have confirmed broadcaster Vin Scully will return to the booth for his 61st season in 2010.

Scully had already said he planned to return for another season before deciding his future next fall.

Scully's 60 years of service is the longest tenure of any broadcaster in sports history, according to the Dodgers.

The Hall of Fame announcer told The Associated Press last month that he still loves the job he's had with the team since 1950, but it's hard to be away from his wife during a long season.

Dodgers owner Frank McCourt says the club is honored that Scully decided to come back.

Scully turned 82 on Sunday. He entered the Hall of Fame in 1982.

My question is, why did Ned accept an extension?

He could have just gotten a GM job somewhere else. The new Owner could want his own guy, and the current owner clearly doesn't have any sort of $.

This really sucks. Hopefully someone steps up to purchase as soon as the team hits the market. A long drawn out sale process would suck, as most of our guyshave 2-3 years left under team control.
Randy Wolf Open To Returning To Dodgers
By Luke Adams [December 2 at 5:56pm CST]

Despite the club's uncertain ownership situation, Randy Wolf would welcome a return to Los Angeles next year, according to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times.

Wolf states that he expects the Dodgers to be competitive next season, regardless of what happens with owner Frank McCourt's divorce. However, after the team failed to offer arbitration to the left-hander, it seems unlikely that Wolf will be wearing Dodger blue next year. The lack of an arbitration offer not only suggests that the Dodgers' payroll situation is up in the air, but also makes Wolf more attractive to other suitors who now won't have to part with a high draft pick to sign him. The lefty himself mentions that a couple teams have already been "aggressive" in their pursuit.

Nonetheless, if the Dodgers can afford him, Wolf would love to come back: "I always wanted to play for the Dodgers. My teammates are great. I had a great time with them."
Pirates, Dodgers, Braves, A's After Kameron Loe
By Tim Dierkes [December 2 at 4:52pm CST]

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has the scoop on righty Kameron Loe, who spent the year in Japan and is apparently contemplating a return. Back in November of '08 the Rangers sold Loe's rights to the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks, who paid him $900K. He pitched only 27 innings, posting a 6.33 ERA. Kovacevic names the Pirates, Dodgers, Braves, and A's as teams interested in Loe.

Another Pirates note: president Frank ****elly confirmed the team's interest in Rick Ankiel, in an MLB.com chat with fans today.

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 3 at 8:36am CST]

The Red Sox are interested in Orlando Hudson, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com. The Dodgers didn't offer the second baseman arbitration, so he won't cost a draft pick. Marco Scutaro, who would cost a draft pick, still appears to be a priority for the Red Sox. Presumably, Dustin Pedroia would move to shortstop if the club signed Hudson.
Dodgers likely to be patient at Meetings
Club won't jump at high-priced starter, second baseman
By Ken Gurnick / MLB.com

12/02/09 12:00 AM EST

LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti has been chided for saying it's business as usual for the baseball operations department, but he's been working under payroll limitations for most of his four years in charge. He needed to be creative in filling holes last year, and among the results were steady starter Randy Wolf and All-Star second baseman Orlando Hudson, both signed after the first of the year.

In fact, with the Winter Meetings next week in Indianapolis, Colletti is likely to stand patiently on the sidelines, doing more looking than signing, as the biggest needs again are at least one starting pitcher and a second baseman.

"Those are still the areas we'd like to improve," Colletti said. "And we have to rebuild the bench."

Wolf and Hudson essentially replaced Derek Lowe and Jeff Kent a year ago. Even as they maxed out their incentive-filled contracts, Wolf and Hudson proved to be wise value signings at $8 million each.

Both are deserving of the multiyear deals they couldn't find a year ago, but neither is likely to get that from the Dodgers now. The franchise's history is littered with bad multiyear signings, to the tune of just under $1 billion over the past 12 years.

Two obvious pitching possibilities are Vicente Padilla and Jon Garland. Colletti already acquired them in 2009, so the interest is established. Length and value of contract again will be decisive factors.

The Dodgers aren't expected to bid on any of this year's big-name free agents, but they didn't last year either, except for Manny Ramirez, a very special case indeed. They quickly shelled out significant money to keep the left side of their infield (Casey Blake and Rafael Furcal) intact, but otherwise nibbled on the margins to bolster the bench and sifted through the leftovers to score a handful of key bargains.

Los Angeles will have $40 million in departing free-agent salaries coming off last year's $110 million payroll, but there's another $20 million likely to be added in raises through the arbitration process for the nucleus of a club that has reached the National League Championship Series the past two seasons. What's left over will go to replace the 15 free agents, most of them supporting cast with manageable wages.

Even after overspending on Jason Schmidt, Juan Pierre and Furcal in earlier years, the Dodgers gave deals last winter to Furcal, Blake and then Ramirez, but seem to have little stomach this winter for free agents with multiyear commitments.

As much as some fans want the Dodgers to throw money at every roster hole, that has never been the style of current ownership. Frank McCourt has indicated he'd rather develop stars such as Matt Kemp and Clayton Kershaw than trade them away and buy bigger names with gigantic salaries.

Of the seven position players with jobs determined, four (Kemp, Andre Ethier, James Loney and Russell Martin) are under the age of 27. The same goes for two (Kershaw and Chad Billingsley) of the three projected starting pitchers, as well as each key reliever except for 32-year-old George Sherrill.

Nonetheless, Colletti's past performance indicates his scouts will come up with a surprising reclamation pitching project (Jeff Weaver, Chan Ho Park, Takashi Saito, etc., in years past). He'll patiently let the pitching market be established by early signings and pick over the available pool to come up with another Wolf. And he'll fill the bench with this year's version of Brad Ausmus, Mark Loretta, Juan Castro and Doug Mientkiewicz.

At second base, some fans want the glitz of Dan Uggla or Brandon Phillips, even though that would require the Dodgers to deal away prospects, spend significant salary and pass on a chance to see if Blake DeWitt can continue the youth movement.

Colletti said he's prepared to go with DeWitt if he doesn't find a "solution." Among the available "solutions" are free-agent second basemen Ronnie Belliard (who played well after Colletti traded for him), Placido Polanco, Craig Counsell, Felipe Lopez, Marco Scutaro and Juan Uribe.

If the Dodgers make an impact trade, it's likely to include Pierre, who proved so valuable in 2009 -- during and after Ramirez's suspension. Oddly, both Pierre and the club seem more comfortable in his return as a fourth outfielder this winter than last winter, when the outfielder pushed to be moved.

But Colletti said he told Pierre in October he would "do what I could" if it meant a full-time job elsewhere. Pierre could be the key to a salary swap for an established starting pitcher, even though he's likely to see decent playing time with Ramirez needing more days off.

Colletti again shot down speculation that the Dodgers either want, or are willing, to move Billingsley.

"I can't trade him," Colletti said. "Where do you find another one? I need more, not less."

We have 1-year left with Manny and even though our guys are still young, the last 2 seasons and this one coming up was / is our best chance to make it to theseries.

For the love of god, what is going on with this team
Giants, Dodgers Pursuing Brad Ausmus
By Mike Axisa [December 3 at 1:12pm CST]

Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FoxSports.com report that the Dodgers and Giants are among the teams pursuing free agent catcher Brad Ausmus. Peter Mrowka, Ausmus' agent, said it's "possible" but "not likely" that his client will play for a team not based on the West Coast next year.

The 40-year-old Ausmus hit .295/.343/.368 in 36 games (107 plate appearances) with the Dodgers last year, his best offensive season since 1999. The FoxSports.com duo mention the Padres as another possible landing spot.

Dylan Hernandez of The LA Times tweets that the Dodgers are in discussions with free agent reliever Luis Ayala about a minor league contract.

Ayala, 32 in January, posted a 5.62 ERA in 40 innings in 2009, mostly for the Twins but some for the Marlins. Over the last two seasons, he's posted a 5.68 ERA in 115.2 innings.
Cubs And Cards Lead Chase For Padilla?
By Zach Links [December 3 at 6:52pm CST]

6:52pm: Matthew Leach of MLB.com says not to read too much into word of the Cardinals considering Padilla, although he is likely of "some interest" to them (via Twitter).

5:25pm: The Cubs and Cardinals are in the lead to sign free-agent hurler Vicente Padilla, according to a report from La Prensa passed along by Diamond Notes.

La Prensa's source for the report is Cesar Batista, who is linked to the agency that represents the 32-year-old. Batista says that formal negotiations will not begin until after the winter meetings. The White Sox, Orioles, Nationals, Braves, Mets, Red Sox, and Dodgers have also expressed interest in the righty.

They are going to keep on searching the scrap heap,

I agree, you don't get too many windows to win. Look at the Phils, they know they are not getting any younger so they are aggressive as hell. They knowwhat they want and they are going after it (Cliff Lee, Juan Castro, Placido Polanco). It is easier to tell your fanbase that you are going to rebuild afterwinning a couple of titles. I think that is the plan the Phils have, to rebuild once their stars (Rollins, Utley, Howard, Werth, Victorino) get old. They arenot going to settle for mediocrity.

I don't know, if the Dodgers stick with DeWitt and they end up with reclamation projects in the rotation, there is no way that Frank McCourt will ever winthe heart of the Dodger fan base. The tide was turning with two consecutive NLCS appearances, but now with the divorce and penny pinching (Well, you can'tpenny pinch if you are broke
laugh.gif
) the Dodgers failure will fall in hislap, for not providing the financial support in order to help the Dodgers acquire the player or players that will get the team over the hump.

The rumors that are popping up are disheartening. That we are not a player for Dan Uggla (What the %#!%?). I understand not being a player for Roy Halladay. He will cost too much in terms of talent, and I doubt he will sign an extension with us now that it is coming out that he would prefer going to a team that hasST in Florida.

There is no reason why we shouldn't be players for Dan Uggla or Brandon Phillips for our 2b hole. Letting DeWitt try and win the job is something you dowhen you are rebuilding, not when you are trying to get out of hand.

There is no reason why we are "fighting" with the Giants to retain the services of Brad Ausmus. We shouldn't have lost Castro either. It justseems these teams are being more aggressive and showing these players that they want them on their team, while we try to figure out if it's possible tosell more wall space in order to sign a backup catcher

Ausmus wants to stay in LA
Wolf wants to stay in LA
Garland wants to stay in LA

I'm ok with Padilla not being pursued, thanks for the memories and good luck in your next destination. Good to see Saito land the biggest deal of hiscareer. I don't know what the Braves are thinking, that is a lot of money invested in their back end of the rotation, two guys that are a bit on the oldside and susceptible to injuries. Hope it pans out, I know they regret giving Lowe that big deal.

No on Scutaro

This is what I was trying to say a couple months back.

Like you said, the window of opportunity gets slightly smaller year after year. Let's be real, Manny is playing for his last big contract and will end upin the AL. He is playing for the big bucks and I'm only hoping he comes out roided and ready to go.

The Dodgers, although "broke" should be more aggressive putting this team in a better position to be successful especially with our arch-nemesis thePhillies getting stronger even though they're getting older. We ain't touching that lineup or pitching staff, I've ate my words about that team. That lineup was / is stacked with barely any weaknesses - the damn power they bring to the plate is impressive as hell.

Especially with DeWitt, I wouldn't mind him being that utility guy off the bench, but to have him as our starting second baseman - how would the team feelabout that? For the sake of Manny's last year, bring in a bat we can put in any spot in the lineup that can produce with some pop.

What irks me is we don't get any draft picks for any of our Type-As

Its really hard to gauge the direction of the ownership / team with the lack of aggressiveness they've been showing.
