Offical 2009-10 NBA Season Thread

When bron came in the leauge his jump shot was horrible yet he is a very good shooter now, yet rose can't?

Like I said before anything this dude says with out backing it up with stats he sounds like a fool

In his second year Lebron James shot .350% from 3, he had range on his jumper despite it's streakyness Rose is worse than Lebron as a shooter.
Is it possible that Derrick Rose improves his jump shooting? Of course. But right now he is a point guard that doesn't play defense and teams have no reason to respect until he gets within 15 feet and right now it's insanity to call him a top 3 point guard, and even more insane to intimate he is anywhere as good as Nash.

Lebron still isnt really a good shooter imo. he's still streaky as hell.

and Rose's mid range game is already solid imo. look at RIP and Dirk. they live off their midrange game because its so lethal. He'll develop the 3 ball eventually.

and Rose does play defense. he may not be a lockdown defense, but with his athleticism, it'll cut him off a lot of slack until he gets older but by then, he should already be an above average defender.

I think the way Rose releases his shot makes him only a wide open jump shooter because if you notice he can't hit anything with a hand in his face, he needs to be wide open. Will he hit a shot with a hand in his face on occasion, yeah, can he do it on the regular, no. He almost has a push shot, no arc, just straight from in front of his face. Dude is so quick though, and with the no hand check rule, he doesn't even really need a knock down J. I'll tell you this though put Derrick Rose in the league 10 years ago, he'd be a bum

Chad Ford's Mock Draft, Version 1.0

By Chad Ford

Andy Lyons/Getty ImagesKentucky's John Wall is a slam dunk as this year's No. 1 pick. But how will the rest of 2010 draft go?

All year, in our Top 100, I have kept tabs on the draft stock of the prospects who might be available for the 2010 NBA draft, based on what scouts and general managers in the league tell me. A consensus gradually forms, and we have a pretty firm idea of how each prospect shapes up at a given time.

In contrast, the mock draft is based more on educated guesses about what specific teams will do. Although we know what teams generally think of prospects, a lot remains unknown.

For starters, we don't know which players might withdraw from the draft by Saturday's deadline. Even when we find out exactly who has stayed in the draft, we won't know in what order the first 14 teams will select.

When we do learn the order, at the May 18 lottery, the draft will still be full of mystery. In the next few weeks, the NBA pre-draft combine in Chicago, the adidas Eurocamp and hundreds of team workouts can dramatically alter player evaluations.

All that said, the draft is beginning to come into focus. We know the lottery odds, we know the top prospects and we know team needs.

So it's time to project the complete first round for the first time. You also can see more than 2,000 lottery scenarios and our projections for the first 14 picks in our Lottery Mock Draft.

Here is the first of my many mock drafts between now and the June 24 draft:

19378.jpg

John Wall
Position: PG
Height: 6-foot-4
Weight: 185 pounds
Age: 19
School: Kentucky

Analysis: This is a no-brainer for the Nets if they are lucky enough to land the No. 1 pick. Some look at starting point guard Devin Harris and wonder whether New Jersey should select Evan Turner instead.

The Nets don't.

Although they like Harris, they love Wall. The Kentucky freshman is the type of young potential superstar who could lure a big-time free agent to Jersey this summer.

Evan Turner
Position: SG
Height: 6-7
Weight: 205
Age: 21
School: Ohio State

Analysis: Turner would be a terrific fit for the Wolves, who need a versatile swingman who can play multiple positions on the floor. Turner's ability to come in and contribute from day one could help Minnesota immensely next season.

Derrick Favors
Position: PF
Height: 6-9
Weight: 215
Age: 18
College: Georgia Tech

Analysis: The Kings might be terrible at the moment, but a core of Tyreke Evans and Favors would make them very dangerous in the future. Favors didn't have a huge freshman season at Georgia Tech, but he has the potential to be the next Antonio McDyess.

Although it's clear the Kings like Carl Landry and Jason Thompson, neither has the upside of Favors.

DeMarcus Cousins
Position: C
Height: 6-11
Weight: 260
Age: 19
School: Kentucky

Analysis: It figures that Cousins would land in Golden State. The Warriors are filled with young talent, but they're also the most dysfunctional team in the league. Enter Cousins, who was the most talented big man in college basketball, but also the most unstable. It's a match made in heaven.

Analysis: The Wizards aren't desperate for a small forward, but they are desperate for some star power after gutting the roster this winter. Johnson's versatility and upside would be too much to pass up here.

Cole Aldrich
Position: C
Height: 6-11
Weight: 245
Age: 21
School: Kansas

Analysis: Aldrich might never be a star, but he's a solid big man who rebounds, blocks shots, and scores from inside and out. With only one more season left on Samuel Dalembert's contract, Aldrich would provide some great insurance.

Ed Davis
Position: PF
Height: 6-10
Weight: 215
Age: 20
College: North Carolina

Analysis: The Pistons are high on Al-Farouq Aminu, but the last thing they need is another tweener after adding Austin Daye and Charlie Villanueva last summer. Davis didn't dominate as a sophomore, but he's an athletic big man who's active on the boards. The Pistons desperately need a player like that.

Al-Farouq Aminu
Position: SF

Age: 19
School:Wake Forest

Analysis: Aminu is one of the best athletes in the draft. The question is, what position does he play? If he continues to refine his perimeter game, he'd be a great fit next to Blake Griffin in the Clippers' frontcourt.

Age: 19
School: Georgetown

Analysis: The Jazz are in a position to lose Carlos Boozer this summer via free agency, but Monroe would be a solid consolation prize. He's not super athletic, but he's the most skilled big guy in the draft and would be a perfect fit in Jerry Sloan's half-court offense.

Ekpe Udoh
Position: PF
Height: 6-10
Weight: 240
Age: 22
School: Baylor

Analysis: Barring a lottery miracle, the Pacers are screwed. A month ago, they were looking at possibly drafting No. 4 and adding a building block next to Danny Granger. But a late-season run dropped them all the way to 10th and ended any realistic chance that they'll get a star.

Udoh, however, would fit a need as an athletic shot-blocker who can run the floor.

Daniel Orton
Position: C
Height: 6-10
Weight: 260
Age: 19
School: Kentucky

Analysis: Orton barely made a dent in the box score for Kentucky, but NBA scouts are convinced he could be a really good NBA center. He is strong and physical, and can dominate on the defensive end.

He needs to improve his offense, but if he does, he could be a star down the road. The Hornets were very thin up front all season. Orton also would give them some insurance in the event Emeka Okafor breaks down.

Patrick Patterson
Position: PF
Height: 6-8

Analysis: The Grizzlies are trying to find a way to eke back into the playoffs. After he drafted a "future" guy in Hasheem Thabeet in 2009, expect GM Chris Wallace to go with a more veteran, proven college player this year.

Patterson doesn't wow you with anything he does, but he's solid in virtually every area. Most importantly for the Grizzlies, he would be ready to come in and contribute on day one.

Hassan Whiteside
Position: C
Height: 6-11
Weight: 225
Age: 20
School: Marshall

Analysis: Whiteside has as much upside as anyone in the draft not named Wall or Favors. He's a super-long, lanky shot-blocker who nearly had four triple-doubles this season in points, rebounds and blocked shots.

With the Raptors in danger of losing Chris Bosh this summer, expect Toronto to swing for the fences to help fans forget Bosh if he bolts.

Position: PF
Height: 7-0

Country: Lithuania

Analysis: The Rockets have a habit of drafting value, and this low in the draft, Motiejunas would be a good get. He'll probably spend another year in Italy honing his skills and getting stronger, but when he does get to the NBA, he has the makings of a player.

Analysis: John Salmons might end up opting out of his contract, and the Bucks would love to put another blue-chip prospect in the backcourt with Brandon Jennings.

Henry already has an NBA body and can shoot the lights out. He's a little one-dimensional, but he could step in and immediately fill a role for Milwaukee.

Analysis: The Wolves could really use some consistent shooters who could stretch the defense. Adding Evan Turner won't help much in that regard, but Hayward could. Although he struggled with his shot this past season, he generally is considered a lights-out shooter.

Analysis: Bledsoe is a tough, Pat Riley type of player and could be a long-term upgrade from the Mario Chalmers-Carlos Arroyo duo at point guard.

Physically, he's ready for the NBA right now. But he still needs more game-time experience running the point. Long term, Bledsoe could pay off.

Analysis: The Grizzlies are hoping Babbitt falls a few more spots in the draft, but I think the Celtics will beat them to the punch. Babbitt is an excellent scorer both inside and out, and he'll rebound. Most importantly, he could step in right away for the Celtics.

Analysis: The Thunder continue to lack a legitimate low-post threat. They drafted B.J. Mullens to be that guy last year, but he's still a work in progress. Alabi will be, too, but at this point in the draft, he has too much size and upside to pass on.

Analysis: If there's one stat that seems to translate from college to the pros, it's rebounding. Faried was the NCAA's leading rebounder this past season, pulling down 13 per game.

He is a bit undersized but makes up for it with toughness and explosive athleticism. He could be the draft's biggest sleeper.

Analysis: Bradley is tough to peg. A few teams are looking at him in the late lottery. But if he slides a bit, don't expect him to slip much further than here. Bradley's defensive abilities alone make him a lock for the pros. If he can find a position on offense, he could be a star.

But Warren is a steal here and the type of versatile guard who could make an impact for the Magic.

Wade not sure about Riley as a coach

Heat president Pat Riley said earlier this week that he would consider becoming the club's head coach again if a top free agent, like LeBron James or Chris Bosh, made that a condition of coming to South Florida.

When asked, Heat free-agent-to-be Dwyane Wade didn't really give Riley a ringing endorsement about becoming the head coach again.

"Let me say it like this, I've won a championship with Coach Riley, and I've won 15 games with Coach Riley," Wade told the New York Post. "So it all depends on what year it is. We've had success. We've had turmoil. So it all depends."

Wade wasn't surprised to hear Riley talk about returning to the bench.

"If you know coach, you know he's never lost the passion," Wade said. "He stepped aside to run the organization, but he never lost the passion to coach. I wasn't surprised at all. I understand where his mindset is, but at the same time Erik Spoelstra is still our coach, so I'm not putting much into it."

Calipari chatter persists

John Calipari denied interest in the Bulls' head-coaching gig to ESPN's Andy Katz earlier this week.

And Kentucky has stated that it would like to work on a new deal with Calipari, one that would keep him locked up "until he retires."

But among Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, Garry Parrish of CBS Sports and K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune, the case is mounting that Calipari does indeed have interest in the Bulls' head-coaching gig.

And just because he says he's happy at Kentucky doesn't mean he's staying. Don't forget, he was saying similar things about Memphis last spring before bolting for Kentucky.

As Jim Rome argues: "I think he is happy at Kentucky. Just not as happy as he'd be coaching Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls. Or coaching LeBron James, for instance. Cal's not spending his career coaching at Kentucky. He'll do what he's always done: recruit like a mother, win a ton of games, and then bust out when he finds a situation he likes better than the one he has. UK is great, but it's not the NBA."

So if Cal is interested, the question then becomes: Are the Bulls?

Looks like that's harder to define.

Writes K.C. Johnson: "Whether it's reciprocal is unknown. General manager Gar Forman said he won't give updates, and team sources didn't shed any light on the matter. Typically, Calipari would seem to represent the kind of slick candidate that turns off the Bulls. But this summer's free-agent class adds a unique dynamic to this coach search, one where Calipari's friendship with both Roses [Derrick Rose and LeBron's agent, Leon Rose] and James can't be ignored."

Adds Sam Amick of FanHouse: "But while Calipari could indeed wind up being given the position and perhaps maybe even luring the likes of LeBron James to the Windy City, a source close to the Bulls said that storyline hasn't even started yet. According to the source, the Bulls are unaware whether Calipari has interest and neither he nor his representative nor even back-channel colleagues had made his interest known as of earlier Wednesday. … The source close to the Bulls indicated their search will be a slow one, with every reason to think the pace is the team's intentional attempt to either wait for candidates like Calipari or get a better sense from prospective free agents what they might want -- or who -- in a coach."

As Rick Bozich of the Louisville Courier-Journal writes, it may come down to money.

"As a long-time Chicago White Sox fan who has watched Bulls and White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf reach for pennies like they're man-hole covers, I can't see the Bulls paying Cal what he'd like. So expect the talk to stir for a few more days and then subside," he writes.

Yet, Bulls GM Gar Forman did say money wouldn't be an issue in the search, so there's a chance if it means landing James, the Bulls may actually pony up, something they weren't willing to do last time around with Mike D'Antoni before settling on Vinny Del Negro.
[h5]If Del Negro's out, who's in?[/h5]
 • Dallas assistant Dwane Casey. Before Del Negro's firing, Ken Berger of CBS Sports wrote that Casey "would receive serious consideration" if Del Negro was let go.
 • Byron Scott. He's had success with an All-Star point guard already in Chris Paul, and says he'd be open to Chicago.
 • Former Nets coach Lawrence Frank. When Del Negro was on the outs in December, his name was mentioned.
 • Boston associate coach Tom Thibodeau. He could bring a defensive mindset to the team.
 • Doug Collins. Would he leave his TV gig to coach in the league again?
 • Kevin McHale, Maurice Cheeks. The Chicago Tribune reports these two could be in the mix.
 • John Calipari. Yahoo! Sports is reporting Cal is intrigued by the job and would listen to a pitch from management.

Teams can speak with Thibodeau

According to The Boston Globe, Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said assistant coach Tim Thibodeau can interview for coaching positions during the playoffs.

The Clippers and Hornets have already asked for permission to speak with Thibodeau. He may also be a candidate for the Bulls vacancy.

Ian O'Connor of ESPN New York thinks he could be a good head coach for the Nets.

Thibodeau has left mark along the way
"Among the NBA assistants without head coaching experience, Thorn is said to have his eye on the Mavericks' Dwane Casey and the Lakers' Brian Shaw. Thibodeau, however, appears to be the leader in the assistant clubhouse. He's been in the NBA forever, improving defenses wherever he's landed. Thibodeau helped Van Gundy's Knicks hold 33 consecutive opponents under 100 points. With Van Gundy's Rockets, Thibodeau's role in Yao Ming's development validates the notion he's the right guy for Brook Lopez. Doc Rivers deserved the credit for Boston's championship triumph over Kobe and the Lakers two years back, but Thibodeau did nothing in that title run to hurt his reputation as the sport's leading defensive stopper. The knocks against him read like this: 1.) Thibodeau's never been an NBA head coach; and 2.) Some executives actually wonder if he's too committed to his work -- that's right, too committed -- to make for a balanced leader. In other words, the married-to-the-job likes of Thibodeau, a bachelor, could end up running himself and his team into the ground. 'Which is ridiculous,' said one NBA source close to Thibodeau. 'You'd think teams would want to hire someone who works hard, and yet that's a perception Tom's had to deal with.'"

does ford look at team needs at all when making a mock?

-Cousins would die in Golden state run and gun

-he has memphis taken 3 players at postions they have filled up

-he says the wizards dont need to take a SF but has them taken 2

-then has the jazz taken a PF when they signed there future PF last year

At least for the Utah part, i think they like havin the 2 bruising power forwards there, so even if Booz leaves, they'll want a guy to then fill Milsap's role off the bench.

But the rest, yeah, he don't make no sense.

The Grizzlies picks aren't that bad.

The Patrick Patterson pick is solid. He could back up Zach Randolph if Darrell Arthur falters. I would prefer Xavier Henry at 12 though.
I'm intrigued with Avery Bradley. He doesn't have a position (yet) but he plays good defense and can hit jumps here and there.
I like Paul George, from what little I've seen of him. He reminds me a lot of Ariza with his size, athleticism and spot up shooting.

Imma post this Hollinger %!+* without a spoiler. Deal with it.

(Don't worry CP, there aren't that many numbers. Still a lot of words, though. Mike, you should probably still sit this one out...)

I wrote an article recently about playoff myths -- things people think change in the playoffs, but in fact don't.

However, there's another piece to that puzzle. Perhaps there are thingspeople don't think change in the playoffs, but in fact do.

I may have accidentally stumbled upon one in observing my two "home"teams, Atlanta and Portland, compete in the playoffs over the past twoseasons. Watching the Hawks in particular, nearly every commentator hasbeen shocked by how little ball movement their offense generates andhow many times they end up isolating Joe Johnson while everybody elsestands around and watches.

This complaint might sound familiar to folks in the Northwest, becauseit's not altogether different from what the Blazers do with BrandonRoy. Both teams' fan bases constantly complain about the lack oforiginality and shameless predictably inherent in such an attack.

The similarities don't end there. Both teams are coached by formerplayers -- Mike Woodson for Atlanta and Nate McMillan for Portland --with a no-nonsense, old-school mentality.

And both have been wildly successful with this system. In fact, if youlook at the numbers, you wonder what everybody's upset about. BothAtlanta and Portland are far better offensive teams than people realize-- their slow pace, low turnover rate and monstrous offensiverebounding numbers mask their efficiency.

In the regular season, Atlanta played the league's fourth-slowest paceand the Blazers played the slowest, so their points-per-game numbersaren't reflective of how well they played at the offensive end. Neitherare their shooting percentages: The Hawks were only 14th in trueshooting percentage at 54.5 and the Blazers barely ahead of them at54.7.

Yet if you look at the offensive efficiencystandings, the two clubs had few peers. Atlanta, believe it or not, hadthe league's third-best offense this season at 108.9 points per 100possessions, while the Blazers were eighth despite being wracked byinjuries. This was actually just more of the same -- a season ago ahealthier Portland team was second, while Atlanta (without the scoringof Jamal Crawford off the bench) was 10th.

It turns out the iso-heavy offense has some benefits. Though hard onthe eyes, the "iso-Joe" and "iso-Brandon" attacks produce remarkablyfew turnovers. Since both Roy and Johnson are good ballhandlers andnothing technically precise was asked of the other players, Atlanta andPortland were first and second, respectively, in avoiding turnovers.

Additionally, perhaps because they knew when to time their runs to theboard while Johnson and Roy created shots, both Atlanta and Portlandlanded in the top five in offensive rebound rate -- each grabbed 28.4percent of missed shots.

In other words, theirs is a volume strategy. The Hawks and Blazersmight not take better shots than other teams, but they take a lot moreof them. Over time, that gives them enough of an advantage to make thempotent offensive squads overall.

So what's the problem?

Apparently, there isn't one … until Game 83. Rememberwhen I was talking about things that change in the playoffs? One changeis that these iso-heavy offenses apparently have a lot more troublewhen opponents have time to game plan against them in a playoff series.

Take a look at the playoff results from these teams the past twoseasons, and the conclusion is hard to ignore. If this happened in anyone playoff series, we might be able to dismiss it as a short-termfluke. But the fact that it's happened six times in six series tells usthat maybe something about isolation-heavy offenses doesn't functionwell in an environment in which opponents have several days to scout,game-plan and match up for this specific tactic.

We'll start with Portland. The Blazers were the second-best offense in2008-09 in the regular season, and met the fourth-best defense fromHouston in the first round. Based on the opponent, we would haveexpected some drop-off from the Blazers, yes, but among the 16 playoffteams, they were only eighth in offensive efficiency.

The Blazers were as successful as before at avoiding turnovers, butthey couldn't make shots and couldn't get the misses. In particular, the Rockets eliminated their second shots, taking the league's topregular-season offensive rebounding team down to 11th among 16 playoffteams. Portland's TS percentage also dropped from eighth among 30 teamsto 12th out of 16.

In 2009-10, Portland faced a much weaker defensive team in Phoenix, butbasically the same thing happened. While some of this can be pinned onRoy's injury, the numerical changes were virtually identical to a yearearlier -- they were just as good at avoiding turnovers, but missed alot more shots and didn't rebound nearly as many of them.

Let's move on to Atlanta. In 2008-09 the Hawks played 11 playoff games,a larger sample than the Blazers have to offer, and seven of them wereagainst a fairly average Miami defense (the other four, however, wereagainst a robust Cleveland D).

The same thing happened that befell the Blazers: Atlanta stopped makingshots. The Hawks had the second-worst TS percentage of any playoffteam, and finished the postseason 13th in offensive efficiency.

This year, we're seeing the same movie. The Hawks have faced two verystrong defenses, with Milwaukee ranking third in Defensive Efficiencyand Orlando second. But while seven of their eight games were againstthe Bucks, Milwaukee was without perhaps its best defender in centerAndrew Bogut.

Nonetheless, the results have been the same.

Atlanta, as the league's third-best offense, should at least be able tobattle these defenses to a draw. But even before Tuesday's Game 1implosion against Orlando, they were struggling. The Hawks can't makeshots, ranking just 14th out of 16 teams in postseason TS percentage. While they've still been able to generate second shots (they lead allteams in playoff Offensive Rebound Rate) and have been somewhatsuccessful at avoiding turnovers, the net result put the Hawks 11thamong the 16 playoff teams in postseason Offensive Efficiency.

So what is it? Perhaps the Hawks and Blazers have just had some badgames against some pretty good defenses. But between the two, we'vebuilt up a 31-game sample showing that something more nefarious mightbe at work.

Obviously, this has important implications for Atlanta's Game 2 inOrlando on Thursday. Iso-Joe has had its moments; Game 4 of the 2008Boston series, for instance, when Johnson single-handedly tore apartone of the best defensive teams in history. But in the aggregate, its failures have been far greater than itssuccesses, and it's notable that the most similar offensive team hasfaced similar troubles.

Is there something about iso-heavy offenses that makes them vulnerablein the playoffs? We can't say it with certainty yet, but the case isbuilding rapidly. The Hawks have three games left to show that Iso-Joecan be as effective in May as it is between November and April.

Dude typed for two hours to tell me that the Hawks and Blazers can't win in the playoffs.

Thanks for the heads up Hollinger, where would I be without you?

I've always said JJ and B-Roy were eerily similar in terms of their roles. That's why I've NEVER understood why people act like JJ is this overrated dude that teams will regret giving the max, while B-Roy is supposedly so underrated and deserves it.

the magic are the best team in the league 1-12

not saying they will def win the championship because they have 2 variables in dwight and vince and the refs hate them....
but they are the best team in the NBA by a decent margin.

Roy is hyped cuz he's a Blazer, their fans go crazy over anybody above decent.

Dub, I agree with you.  When Orlando plays it's game, and they are on, I think they can beat anybody.  Inside, outside, defense, clutch, 3's, ball movement, PG, C, wings, depth, they have everything.  They are one tough team.  And not a single "expert" out there is talking about them.  It drives me nuts.  Everyone and their Spurs love, or the Suns are the flavor of the month, or the Bron's, and on and on about diff teams, and the Magic just keep on playin and winning.  Their next series is gonna be epic, no matter which team it is.

I don't have the stats at the moment (OKB?

) but I'm pretty sure Roy is waaay more clutch than JJ is. Plus Roy is younger (but then again he has the shaky knees).

He wasn't this year.

http://www.82games.com/0910/CSORT11.HTMHe was last year

http://www.82games.com/0809/CSORT11.HTM

http://www.82games.com/0809/CSORT11.HTMAnd even still their clutch stats are very similar. No clear undeniable evidence that suggests one is better than the other for their to be so much difference in opinion when discussing the two. 3 year age difference too.

yeah orlando is on a tear right now...theyve won 12 games in a row including the the final games of the regular season...theyre definitely a force out there in the east

yeah the "analysis" bothers the hell out of me. it's very hard to find someone picking the magic to come out of the east.

people keep thinking last year was a fluke but they beat the cavs without nelson. (who is just filthy and can shoot better than the likes of rondo and rose but gets no hype) plus that lakers/magic series was alot closer than people want to admit

the magic are a legit team. i think there are good chances at a great finals thsi year

lakers/magic would be great
lakers/celtics would be great
magic/suns would be fun to watch.
cavs/lakers would obviously turn into kobe/bron

stern needs to learn how to market teams not just lebron. there is alot of great stuff going on in teh league that gets swept under the rug in favor of Mr. elbow.
