Minnesota Timberwolves Offseason Thread

Just think...you'll be in this same exact position next year...

I could see the Wolves in the lottery again due to the West being stacked, though I don't see them picking this high again for a while unless Stern decidesit's needed.

Sadly, it's a reality. I think Brook wouldn't be a bad pick, but I don't know he could possibly be a bust. If we went that route, got Lopez, wecould maybe get a solid PG in the second round, because we have two early picks in that round (#31 and #34). If we don't do well next year we could maybeget Ricky Rubio, who knows.

I'd like to see the Wolves trade one of those second rounders for a veteran guard to mentor the young guns followed by them taking Rubio in '09. Also, Brewer needs to put some size on and he'll be a stud.

Believe it or not, even if they did this, that veteran would probably be gone by the time Rubio even got here. McHale's cleaning house, whichmeans no room for veterans

BTW~ rsdplaya you should just make this the official Minnesota Timberwolves off season thread.
Title it- Minnesota Timberwolves Offseason Thread~#3 Pick ( something like that )

Y'all lil pansies better draft Juice... I'ma need him not to end up in NY so I can feel comfortable rooting against them and hoping for there totalfailure

Not sure if we need Mayo. Obviously, I'd welcome him in and he would improve our squad, but we have a bigger need @ center. Al Jefferson plays a lot betterat the PF spot, and for some reason Wittman had him playing Center a lot this season. OJ would be a good addition, but in the end I think Brook is a betterchoice (for us)

yea, this is true...with another big guy down low at Center, it would move Big Al to PF. I guess if we had Lopez, they wouldn't be able to double team bothguys, and both are def. scoring big men. and i do forget about the 2 early 2nd round picks, with this draft, they could get a good PG to help out a bit.

i would really like to see mayo on the wolves but they would definately have to trade one of their guards. they have too many young guys who need time on thecourt to develop but with mayo too then no one will get the time they deserve. id say trade foye or marko if they take mayo.

If we took Mayo, I think we should get rid of Marko (even though I think he's on his way out anyway) and maybe Bassy. I'm pretty sure that OJ wouldplay PG and Foye would play the 2 so that would be pretty nice. I just want to get the best possible player at that pick.

I don't think there's any scenario in which the Wolves will or should trade Foye. He's way too good of a player...he's a building block at theguard position, whether it be 1 or 2. He's only going to get better too.

The Wolves have already come out and said they arent going to draft based on needs. They are in a state where they just take the best player onthe board and go from there. Beyond that, as we've gone over there is not one player on the Wolves outside of Al who is untouchable right now. And not oneplayer who is showing he is "can't miss" in a couple years (yes that includes Foye). The Wolves' biggest problem right now is their guardplay. They have quite possibly the worst defensive combo of guards in the league each night they tip off. And that bugs the living daylights out ofWittman and McHale. It would be one thing if one of those guards could give you huge production on the other offensive end....but none have been consistent yetor proven they can be guards on a winning Western Conference team. I see them giving this one more season of "figuring out" most their players(because there will be little to no expectations next season yet again) and they make a huge move next summer. They also will have the books more clear fromthe buyouts as Glen Taylor has come out and said a few times. At this point I personally don't know yet who I like best at #3 but as I wrote last nightit's likely going to be Lopez right now IMO. Whoever they pick, McHale has a nice track record of not having a clue what he's doing in the draft and Isee no reason why that should change. I've always given him credit for being the one to draft Garnett back when high school players were huge projects andquestion marks (in fact sources have said there was a good chance he would have taken Garnett at #1.). But beyond that there is not much you can hang your haton and we've been over that countless times. Even the more recent picks have been huge question marks....taking Brewer, choosing Foye over Roy, etc. A lotof great young players in the league you just see right away they are going to be stars in this league. With the Wolves picks it's always "Well wejust dont know yet, let's give him some time." And that will continue with Lopez I'm sure if that is the guy.

I actually would be cool with the team taking Mayo at that spot. Who knows what kind of headcase he may bring.....but from day 1 he would be able to do moredamage at his position(s) than any other player the team has on the roster at those spots. And he can score with his athleticism. That's something to thinkabout.

Other Wolves tidbits taken from people in the know for you guys:

- Telfair, Jaric, McCants and Foye all are not completely etched in stone in this team's future.

- Rashad McCants is on his last "try out" with the team this coming year. The team thinks he's hit close to his ceiling and he's a quickscorer who would be valuable off the bench, even on a good team. The problem there is Rashad thinks he should be the #1 starting guard. Something has to giveand do not be surprised if you see him moved. He is also another guy where if he stops one guy on the defensive end it will be his first time.

- Unless he completely changes his buyout demands there is very good chance Antoine Walker will still be in uniform for the team again next season.

- Ryan Gomes has a future on this team and they like him. They however don't want to overpay for him so it will be interesting to see if he can get bigbucks (for him) anywhere else.

- Believe it or not (to me at least) Sebastion Telfair has actual trade value and that value means more to the team right now than him being an actual part ofthe team. Do not be surprised to see him in a deal that involves the team handing over the PG reigns completely to Foye to see one last time if he can handleit. Because of his height McHale does not want a 6'2'' shooting guard. He will be a PG in a combo guard's body though. But even McHale knowsthere are very few "true" great PGs in the league.

- McHale believes Brewer really can provide value on a good team once he matures.

- The team has 8 total players they are giving serious looks at for the 3rd pick.

- Very, very high chance Fred Hoiberg will take McHale's seat once this upcoming season ends. They still will have a sort of triangle of authority however(which to me continues to baffle). Jim Stack and Babcock are the other two.

I actually still feel pretty good about this team right now. It's a much better feeling being on the bottom and working your way up. In pro sports youmostly need to be either near the top or bottom-out and be near the bottom. It's when you are stuck in the middle (as the Wolves were for about 6-7 yearsrecently) where things go nowhere. McHale wanted one last crack to start over and this is his chance. You never know what can happen, and as we know the luckof the lottery can change everything. Landing the #1 pick last night would have made McHale look 10 times smarter.

FYI the team still owes a pick to LAC for the Cassell trade that is getting close to having to send over. The team got next year's pick back from Bostonthat they owed in the Ricky Davis trade, and they also acquired Boston's own 2009 pick as well. So they will have 2 picks next year in 1st Round if thingsremain.

I just want to get the best possible player at that pick.

Bingo.

Dont worry about it guys. McHale is gonna trade the pick to the Celtics for something along the lines of Gabe Pruitt and PJ Brown.

That is good news. Maybe the Celtics will do crumby next year

But really, I don't know why Foye doesn't get more respect. By the end of the season was rolling around, I thought he looked pretty good out there. I think he can still be an elite guard, not on Roy's level though
smh.gif

^ Foye doesnt get more respect for 2 reasons:

1. He hasnt played enough so you arent going to just get unwarranted respect from the media/players. He's a career 11 ppg player.

2. He has approached "unwatchable" on defense. This works for the Steve Nash's of the world because of what he brings to the team success inother areas to offset that. But you can't have a 11ppg and 3.3apg starting guard who also cant guard anyone. Well you can if your team is a terrible one.

Again, its going to be a huge season for Foye and he's now in his 3rd year and is supposedly healthy. This is it. The first 2 years meaning nothing if hecan come out and get to that 17+ points a game and 6-8 assists. Minimum.

And keep his man in front of him.

they should try to keep mccants though, keep him in a role similar to manu's...of course, he's gonna want a meaty contract, and i'm sure the Wolveswon't offer it.

I think we should have given McCants more time on the starting lineup this past season. He was one of our most productive scorers so it seems like if yourgoing by production, he could be a starter on a team that only won 22 games. I'm not sure about where his place is on the team in the future though
KeepFoye at all costs..he's got a future in this league and I definitely want it to be with the Timberwolves

Brook Lopez and Al Jefferson in a high/low post game...
smh.gif
Could be NICE.

I know..and I'm torn...Brook is a good fit for our team in a lot of ways..but so is OJ. It's too early for me to decide exactly who I want, soI'm just going to wait until they work out with the team and what the scouting reports are on them, etc.

Alright well I've made up my mind, I want us to draft Mayo. He's the best player at our pick and I always think its best NOT to draft by needs, betterto draft by the best player out there. Look at Adrian Peterson, we drafted him while having a productive RB in C. Taylor and look how AP has worked out for us.Mayo would be a great pick, and that's the direction I'm hoping McHale goes.

minny needs to offer miami the 3rd selection and any player outside jefferson to miami for the 2nd spot.

allows both miami and minny to end the draft with an inside / outside combo to build on.
