07 lakers were in win now mode, so trading future undeveloped assets for pau was a good move, it brought in an experienced big that helped us get to 3 finals and win 2.

07 griz had never won a playoff game in franchise history, they were in the middle of rebuilding so they traded their best player who was never going to lead them anywhere for young projects

it was a great trade for the lakers because it allowed them to win asap with pau phil and kobe, it was a great trade for memphis because one of the several prospects they got in return for pau turned out to be a great player (marc).

oh and because they got rid of pau mid season they ended up with a record bad enough to land them kevin love in the draft, but they end up trading him for OJ mayo

Mamba, you are the media. I am Jerry West. I, Jerry, want Kobe.

So I call you.

Man, Kerry Kittles looks AMAZING. LOVE that guys game, so polished. Really think someone that gets him in the Top 10 is doin well for themselves.

And just like that, media starts talkin about "GM's" like Kittles, and he's solid, etc etc, and he's taken at 8, poof, they look smart.

And Memphis did make out like a bandit. Their franchise was never better than after they dealt Pau. Their only knock was Rudy Gay and OJ Mayo didn't work out, and really, why did they trade Kevin Love to get OJ Mayo in the first place? :lol

Marc Gasol, Kevin Love, Rudy Gay, Mike Conley would have been an amazing start, and then they would have had cap space + extra picks to push them over the top. But alas, someone made the wrong call. Not a crap shoot tho. Those are called mistakes.

i was actually taking my time reading up on the 07 and 08 drafts before hitting reply

OKC Thunder

2007 Kevin Durant and Jeff Green
2008 Russell Westbrook and Serge Ibaka
2009 James Harden
2011 Reggie Jackson

Minnesota
Lands Kevin Love in 2008
2009, has back to back picks at 5-6, take Rubio and Flynn They literally took 2 PG’s back to back. :lol

Could have had Curry, and DeMar DeRozan. :{

What’s even funnier is they also had the 18th pick, took yet ANOTHER PG, who turns out to be better than both Rubio or Flynn, and they traded him. (Ty Lawson)

One front office has brains.

The other front office is stupid on stupid on stupid on stupid.

Ain’t a crapshoot. It’s a crap front office that should be shot.

Again multiple draft picks in consecutive seasons, we've got one shot to do this right, ONE. The majority of Laker fans will not tolerate multiple horrible seasons. One more, maybe next year, at the most and even that is stretching it. If this pick misses, the front office will revert back to the old way of doing things.

Now I'll wait for your response bashing the majority of the fan base as stupid.

I don't need to. Essential said it this morning, and you just typed it here.

Thank you both. :lol

there is no old way of doing things, if this pick doesnt work out we dont have anything of value to trade for established stars. without a solid foundation no established stars will bother coming to us in free agency unless its a melo to NY situation where a guy comes, doesnt win for a few years on subpar teams and starts talking about what it would be like to actually have good teammates

Correct.

Mitch has a decent track record with draft picks as well, as he landed Bynum, Farmar, even Sasha was usable for a year (08) and then Critt. On top of that, he pulled Marc Gasol, and recently he's nabbed Sacre and Kelly with late second round picks.

The problem was, he started selling all of our picks to keep the core going as long as possible. Those lack of solid picks are part of the reason our well ran dry.

We need to rebuild a youthful core.

Remember, when the Gasol deal came, he had Kobe, LO, Fish and Bynum in place, but he also traded for Ariza, had Farmar, Sasha, Turiaf, and Shannon as young pieces behind all that. Kobe was like the 2nd oldest guy on the team and he wasn't even 30 yet. :lol

Xavier ends this season by having wrist surgery and arthroscopic knee surgery.

I doubt there will be much of a market for him. Lakers can probably keep him for cheap again... if they even want.

Old way= going after all the star FAs and trading picks. Which they'll be able to attempt starting after next season and in 2016 considering the cap situation.

Going back and forth arguing over the same topic with the same guy is as close to "battling" as can be in the context of an online forum.

And you're in the middle of one every week with someone different, sometimes myself included :lol

Nothing wrong with it (I know I know, "what else is a forum for?")...

Just pointing it out. 8o :lol

?

We've done that, twice, in 30+ years. Kareem, and Shaq.

How is that a trend, in any way shape or form? :lol

I didn't do nothin, I innocent. *halo*

Aye, every week I hear this type stuff

Coach sucks. Need a new one. (no one says who)

Sign FA, Melo, Love, Rondo, etc (at least people say a name, sadly, they stop with just the one name and nothing else on a roster)

Trade the pick, draft sucks (no one says for what)

This week it's draft is a crapshoot (I'm disputing that as we speak)

Pretty soon, it will be us needing a new GM ( 8o ) but no one will say who they want outside one or two people. 8o

Just cause we didn't get them doesn't mean we didn't attempt to. They've always tried to get stars one way or another.

so in recent memory we have these top 5-10 status players moving from one team to another

melo to ny

bron to miami

bosh to miami

cp3 to LA (twice)

dwight to LA

dwight to Hou

ray to boston

KG to boston

AI to denver

Tmac to Hou

Harden to Hou

all these guys were in/close to their primes when switching teams, out of all these guys only dwight (LA > Hou) switched teams using freeagency, everyone else was a sign and trade or trade

if we want to get the next big star via trade and not the draft than we need assets to trade, we dont have anything worth anything to give away to get a big name player. signing a freeagent star almost never happens and when it does the free agent star will be giving up a bunch of money in order to switch teams (see dwight howard). no one will be willing to turn down free money to come play for a trash lakers team

Littered with "can't miss talent"
Mamba, WHO is the one labeling guys can't miss? It ain't NBA guys with jobs. It's media-ESPN type folks.

Same as NFL, same as MLB.

When was the last time you hear Mitch come out and speak on draft picks before the draft? Have we EVER heard Mitch speak on draft picks before a draft, ever?

Seriously, you can't listen to what joe bloe Kiper NBA type (CP1708) says, and have that reflect what the actual paid, NBA guys think.

Remember how incredulous Steven A was? Kuwahmay Brown for Pau Gasol *starts laughing non stop* Memphis did pretty damn good in that trade, didn't they? But all Steven could read was Kwame-Pau, and nothing else.
Did I do that right?

wink.gif

And you're not disputing anything, just giving your take. Funny how certain people take their own words as gospel. Do you know if anyone is going to be an all star, superstar or marginal piece anymore than I know they'll be busts. Neither do these scouts or GMs, if they did wouldn't make so many boneheaded decisions and misses with all the resources they have, certainly more than Joe Schmo on NT.

Did I do that right?

Who have I hyped up in here as can not miss?

How many times have I said, when YOU, the GM, can sit in a room and interview, or in a gym and watch guy work out, (like West did with a certain high school kid)

I, can't do that, so I can't, and have not, said this player __ is a lock to be great. I (who am not qualified mind you, wink wink) if given the chance to sit in a room with each player, and watch each guy work out, and have access to unlimited tape, would then be able to make a determination, no?

Isn't that their jobs, in fact? To sift thru all that tape, interview, workout, and then eval?

Do ESPN types, or myself, get to have that same access? No, right?

Just cause we didn't get them doesn't mean we didn't attempt to. They've always tried to get stars one way or another.

The Lakers have always mortgaged the future (trading picks) because they were always decent, where acquiring a star at the expense of a pick would make a difference.

They aren't in that position anymore, and I think they know it.

I would almost be willing to bet my Oreos that you'll be singing a different tune on draft night when the Lakers don't pick who you absolutely KNOW we should pick.

"IDIOTS!!!", you'll say (with that same lack of extensive access).

No? You don't think so?

Like I said, I'd bet all the Oreos I've got.

'Cept I love Oreos.

We're going to be in the same/similar position the Heat, Knicks, and Bulls were in 2010 after next season save Kobe's contract and for certain in 2016 if we strike out. Money to throw at a myriad of guys, that won't be the issue. If we're seen as a joke, that'll be a different issue.
