Why tanking isn't a good idea:
1) Lakers can still lose the pick even if they finish in the bottom 3 because of the almighty ping pong ball going in another direction
2) Right now where the Lakers are (second to last), the Lakers ONLY have a 47% chance of keeping their pick
3) Now...if you dump Lou and Nick (your top two playmakers/scorers) for peanuts just to improve your tanking position AND the LAL ping pong ball somehow decides to go in another direction and the Lakers lose their top 3 pick, the Lakers at that point will have received nothing in return for their efforts. They'll have a completely UNATTRACTIVE team to free agents therefore all that cap space is for naught. And the Lakers will once again win another 20 games in 2017-2018, pushing them further into the abyss.
You are all assuming the Lakers will be able to draft Fultz/Ball/Monk/Johnson/Smith if they end up winning 25 games or so without any consideration for the huge fact that they actually have less than a 50% chance of keeping the pick hence the possibility of drafting Fultz, Ball, Johnson, are less likelier than you think. LOL
The best chance for the Lakers to build a playoff contender is BY TRADING CURRENT ASSETS and hope that future free agents will come to the Lakers as a result of the trades the Lakers have made to improve the roster.

I'd rather battle for bottom of the playoff seeding with a young core and lock them up for 8 years than with an aging "star" and be salary cap strapped

If you trade the remaining 3.5 years of DLo's contract and remaining 3.5 years of Deng's contract and replace it with, for example, the remaining 2.5 years of Melo's contract, it does NOT mean the Lakers will be "salary cap strapped" because both DLo's and Deng's contracts basically are worth the same as Carmelo's contract. Not to mention, Melo's contract is off the books by 2019 while the Lakers will still have Deng and DLo under contract in 2019.
The same scenario goes for Butler if the Lakers acquire him.
