The tectonic plates fit together like puzzle pieces. If there is strong enough force, there could a shock wave adjacent ends of the plates (Where 2 or more diff plates meet.) It really all depends on how much force was exerted and the whether land, water, or other tectonic plates absorb the shock.  They are both areas around the pacific plate and we have been seeing volcanic activity along the outline of the plate (Mt. St Hellens for example). The force that causes earthquakes is not just in the plates, but also due to electromagnetic activity from within the planet and above the surface and the affect it has on the magma and fluid dynamics the plates are submerged in. so yes it's possible but I don't think the initial quake was strong enough.

First the earthquake, then the tsunami, then the problems at the nuclear plant, and now a volcano erupts?

Japan can't catch a break.

Military Crew Said to Be Exposed to Radiation, but Officials Call Risk in U.S. Slight

The Pentagon was expected to announce that the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan, which is sailing in the Pacific, passed through a radioactive cloud from stricken nuclear reactors in Japan, causing crew members on deck to receive a month’s worth of radiation in about an hour, government officials said Sunday.

The officials added that American helicopters flying missions about 60 miles north of the damaged reactors became coated with particulate radiation that had to be washed off.

There was no indication that any of the military personnel had experienced ill effects from the exposure. (Everyone is exposed to a small amount of natural background radiation.)

But the episodes showed that the prevailing winds were picking up radioactive material from crippled reactors in northeastern Japan. Ever since an earthquake struck Japan on Friday, the authorities worldwide have been laying plans to map where radioactive plumes might blow and determine what, if any, danger they could pose to people.

Blogs were churning with alarm. But officials insisted that unless the quake-damaged nuclear plants deteriorated into full meltdown, any radiation that reached the United States would be too weak to do any harm.

Washington had “hypothetical plots

any word on the animal population?

can't imagine how many animals were lost in this, since at time of panic most people think about themselves/family and sometimes forget their pets. or about the stray dogs and such.

I hope Japan does a quick recovery from this, incredibly devastating, disaster.

said as the worst since WWII...which means it's like giving them the atomic bomb again. hopefully this would not happen anywhere else again..
praying for the best here...

death toll:
more or less 1800 people have been found dead (as of this morning)

Kind of off topic a little but has anyone seen that movie Hereafter that was directed by Clint Eastwood? Probably one of the best depictions of a real tsunami, even though the real Japanese tsunami footage looked even crazier.
