does the saliva test provide faster results?

Would be awesome if they were able to put something in the test kit and once your saliva hit it, it turned a color to tell you if positive or negative. Sort of like those drug test kits cops have when they pull people over and test a substance to see if its drugs or not.
the one that just got approval needs to be run in a lab but just takes a couple hours. it uses saliva.

they are working on a test strip one that would be similar to a pregnancy test. you spit on it and within minutes or so it turns color to indicate if you're infected. I don't know the status of this kind of test.

I know this is no where near possible but I been dreaming that there's covid detectors that work similar to metal detectors. If you're positive and walk through a door you'll hear the alarm sound.

The saliva test that works similar to a pregnancy test would be really cool though

With context:

“The mutation has become the predominant variant in Europe and the U.S., with the World Health Organization saying there’s no evidence the strain leads to a more severe disease. A paper published in Cell Press said the mutation is unlikely to have a major impact on the efficacy of vaccines currently being developed.”

And from that Cell Press article:

”Will D614G Make Infections More Severe?
So far there is no evidence that infection with SARS-CoV-2 containing the G614 variant will lead to more severe disease. By examining clinical data from 999 COVID-19 cases diagnosed in the United Kingdom, Korber et al. (2020) found that patients infected with viruses containing G614 had higher levels of virus RNA, but they did not find a difference in hospitali- zation outcomes. These clinical observa- tions are supported by two independent studies: 175 COVID-19 patients from Se- attle, WA (Wagner et al., 2020) and 88 COVID-19 patients from Chicago, IL (Lor- enzo-Redondo et al., 2020) in the United States. Viral load and disease severity are not always correlated, particularly when viral RNA is used to estimate virus titer. The current evidence suggests that D614G is less important for COVID-19 than other risk factors, such as age or co- morbidities.”

tl;dr:

1. This strain has BEEN the dominant strain in the US. We are already dealing with it. It isn’t some new boogeyman.

2. Not likely to impact vaccine efficacy (if you want more detail click on the link to the paper above. The lingo is above my knowledge level)

3. Age and co-morbidities are more important risk factors.

4. More infectious =/= more severe illness

This is why I’ve stopped scrolling twitter for COVID news and limit the overall news I take in. These headlines have more bark than bite in them, more often than not, and when you see the source it’s almost never a respected journal/epidemiologist/virologist/medical professional.

as far as #2 the journal article says

-this virus has a small "spike" that sticks out, this is where the virus attaches to host cells and where a vaccine immune response would attach to the virus itself to neutralize it. the mutation is located on this spike, but not in the same way where a vaccine wouldn't be able to recognize it and attach. They think its a structural/support element to the spike.

-other papers saw that the antibodies that respond to the normal virus and the antibodies that respond to the mutated virus work on each other/are backwards compatible lol

Lol i was just coming here to point out how down here in Oklahoma we living like this **** never happened. There's the mask mandate in OKC and everyone has a sign on their door but nobody will say anything if you dont wear one. A couple casinos are even back open

Same thing happened in Texas, look where that got us...

Is there a magic temperature that kills the virus?
Looking on google I’m just finding that cooking at normal temperature is sufficient.

I went to A seafood store this morning to buy salmon and they have all their fish on a counter display out in the open. You tell them what you want and they grab it from there. No safety protocol or anything.

Wondering if baking at a high temperature is good enough. It’s sitting in my fridge right now but just knowing that it was previously out in the open for who knows how long with customers able to touch and breathe on it makes me want to just throw it out and wash the container it’s in

There's no known cases of transmission via food. (this was in April, but I can't find anything indicating that this has changed)

I found that 130-150 degrees inactivated SARS, so a sear would be more than enough, but even that is unlikely.

The more likely and bigger worry is bacteria in the food.

I always cook my salmon at 425 for 20 minutes in the oven and it's delicious. That kind of heat should kill any and all bacteria that may be prevailant.

I'm glad he took it off so he could be fired.

Where does one get one from? Amazon? Local KKK store? Not exactly something you have lying around unless you're....

I'd guess etsy all kinds of crazy masks on there. I doubt amazon would sell something like that.

My brother works for a pharmacy chain (you've heard of them) and one of the staff just tested positive but the bosses are saying he's fine for work.

It's so baffling how the US numbers are so bad... What's the point in testing people if they're just going to act as normal.

our society is capitalist, so we're prone to the narcissism it encompass.

Since you guys are on the topic of face mask.. make sure you aren’t wearing one of those neck warmers as a mask. Studies have shown that they are least effective form of protection. Around my way it’s usually the maga type, outdoor, big truck boys wearing em.
