Interestingly, his wife is white from France.
As is Ouattara's wife (current president of Ivory Coast).

Speaking of Ivory Coast, Laurent Gbagbo (previous president) was acquitted in his trial of crimes against humanity at the Hague. I'm wondering how his return to Ivory Coast (if he does return) is gonna play out.

she acts/looks young so maybe she just is really uninformed, tho she did (sort of, albeit in disrespectfully flippant way) acknowledge that people use info from the 'olden days' to make their case...it is a fact that the island of hispañola was destination/port for slave trade and previously populated by taino/native americans so there really aren't many alternate histories to that; i do think on the merits of culture rather than genetic ancestry, there is a distinction that should be made, putting aside the negative connotations of 'black-ness' and the fact that there are also cultural links to african traditions in the DR. being 'black,' while of course connected to, is it's own thing separate & apart from being african, and similarly being domincan is its own thing. i think the extent to which people(s) identify with blackness/the diaspora/pan africanism as part of their own identitis up to those individual people(s); it doesn't seem very productive to be defining other people's culture/experience for them. sure there are people that deny the ancestral link as well, but they're likely fooling themselves about the extent the country at large rather than any particular individual person has been 'mixed' with african peoples...hopefully those with that mindset get educated and/or come to terms with the past in a way that allows them to acknowledge that history...

I always ask those dark skin hispanics, "which is MORE important to you, being black or being hispanic?"

well if they are and actually came up hispanic, why would the answer be anything other than hispanic? granted it has a basis in colonialism (as well as some african & native american influence) but it would be a much more 'natural' part of their life than 'blackness' (and its sometimes unfortunate negative portrayal in some media) being somewhat foisted upon them. while not exactly the same thing, but we know that many blacks in america also have some white ancestry to the point where they are so fair skinned people assume them to be mixed, when all their immediate relatives as far as they can trace have been 'black' with black parents...and would rightly take some offense to that assumption/assertion that they were mixed

I dont see what would be wrong with saying being black is more important than being hispanic and/or latino.

Marshawn Lynch is buying up real estate in Oakland to combat gentrification

Beast Mode is the best. And I mean that every every possible way. He appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher recently where he was asked about Donald Trump attacking his character as “unpatriotic” for not standing for the National Anthem. Beastmode responded as only Beastmode can.

“That motherf—ker says a lot of ****,” Lynch said of Trump. “But at the end of the day, you call me unpatriotic, but you come to my neighborhood where I’m from and you’ll see me take the shirt off my back and give it to someone in need. I mean what would you call that?”

Unlike his accuser Marshawn understands what patriotic means and he backs it up with his actions.

Mostly, Marshawn is well known for giving back to his Oakland community. It’s why he’s the Raiders Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee. His most recent endeavor is to combat gentrification.

“It’s basically when, for me, it’s a lot of white people come move into the hood and kick everybody out that’s there,” Lynch told Maher. “I’ve been a witness of it since I was a small jitterbug so I mean now that I’m grown up and I’m seeing it, I understand it a little more.”

“While banging my head against people,” Lynch said of playing football, “I had the opportunity to make a couple dollars so therefore I started to go and buy up some real estate in the area where I grew up at in order to give people opportunity for housing.”

Gotta love Marshawn. And if you’re an Oakland native, you gotta love him even more for the love he has for his people.

Dreams Deferred: How Enriching the 1% Widens the Racial Wealth Divide

Racial-Wealth-Gap-graphics3-1-1024x832.jpg

This report looks at the trends in household wealth among Black, Latino and White households over the past three decades

Between 1983 and 2016, the median Black family saw their wealth drop by more than half after adjusting for inflation, compared to a 33 percent increase for the median White household. Over that same period, the number of households with $10 million or more skyrocketed by 856 percent.

The median Black family today owns $3,600— just 2 percent of the $147,000 of wealth the median White family owns. The median Latino family has assets worth $6,600 — just 4 percent as much as the median White family. In other words, the median White family has 41 times more wealth than the median Black family and 22 times more wealth than the median Latino family.

If the trajectory of the past three decades continues, by 2050 the median White family will have $174,000 of wealth, while Latino median wealth will be $8,600 and Black median wealth will be $600. The median Black family is on track to reach zero wealth by 2082.

Shout out to Jason Black for this show. Pullin up a lot receipts on how white America really felt about MLK. How they saw him as getting too "militant" and he needed to be more submissive like the NAACP and other black "leaders" and how some black folks spoke against him.
