Huh? Thats a walk bro. Growing up I played hella ball all over in NYC also and thats always been a walk.
But if you’ll play anything from CYO through NCAA you can catch your own shot.
Im just talking about playing in the park lol. Thats a call everytime. Ive played in a few small leagues here and there and cant remember if they would call that or not, dont think it happened really when I played but it would be my assumptions its a walk. Doesnt make sense to throw up an airball without hitting anything or anyone touching it then somehow catch it and it not be a walk.
When I was going through officiating school I agreed with you it was shocking to me to learn as I was what, like 26 at the time and never heard of this rule. But the rule is if it looks like an attempted shot then it can be caught even if it doesn’t touch another player or the rim.
But I mean a self actual pass would be a travel. So

That’s what I’m saying. It’s legal everywhere except nba. So the question is do pick up games follow nba or everything else? I feel like it doesn’t happen often enough for a consensus, but when it does happen 3/10 want a travel, 3/10 want it legal, and 4/10 are like idk lol
Most of the time it would be a shot in the paint , maybe a contested lay up or O rebound put back that was out of controlWhat's the actual wording of the rule, is my question. Just sounds like another situation where 99% of people play it with a certain connotation of what rules are what. I can't even imagine shooting a 3, airballing, and following your shot, catching it by the rim either on the fly or on the bounce, and then going up with a putback and thinking that's not a violation.

The group of folks I play with are also split with what an legal hesi and/or gather dribble is but for you sure if you catch your own airball, it's a travel. Check ball.
Lol yeahdefinitely know what type of time it’s going to be on when folk get to arguing about what is a legal dribble…a whole lotta arguing gathers are tough because that also is different from nba/high school as well as if you do something that looks different or is off rhythm it will usually get called…it’s always hilarious to see everyone’s depictions of the move in question
Corey maggette and keyon dooling used to hoop at my gym. Dooling couldn’t miss and maggette took it easy on everyone, just shoots threes, still wet. These guys are pros
And this was only a year ago, well after their retirement
Damn, all Dooling did was shoot 3's?
