It was never reported the Celtics were close or came in 2nd on Harden though. That was a Philly-Brooklyn race. The Celtics weren't giving up Jaylen, which was what Houston wanted. Celtics were just thrown into those talks by the media machine because Harden expanded his list of acceptable destinations.

Now other trade scenarios involving Ainge and other teams and dropping the ball or whatever, different story.
