Yeah Sinterklaas or Saint Nicholas is the name of the holiday, Zwarte Piet/Black Pete is the blackface element in the holiday.

I agree with all this. I listen to a little Booba but i cant claim to know much French history or what their race relations are like.
Griez made a mistake and I hope he gets educated on the topic and makes an apology. He doesn’t seem to have a history of this sort of thing so Im not going to declare him a racist just yet. If he does something like this again? Then yeah I’ll look at him pretty differently.

I think in recent times, there's been enough European press that have talked about how racist this Dutch tradition is so I now starting to think racist lil bags can't claim ignorance in this matter. He's just another example of a culture vulture that is aloof & privileged to think he's above or beyond reproach. His follow-up to the pic & then his half a**ed apology are further proof of this...

Got dayum... Just watched the City vs Spurs game off of the DVR... Otamendi, Arry Kane, & Alli all should've gotten red cards, especially Alli... He had mean intent on his face when he put his boot on the side of KdB...

It is inherently racist but unfortunately those protests only started occuring a few years ago and hardly anything came of it. I'm white so maybe I'm underestimating the amount of deliberate ignorance on the matter. This year I didn't notice that debate being brought up at all.
Throughout the years the holiday was also whitewashed in an attempt to try and cover up the less overt racist elements. I'm 23 and the way I grew up with that holiday, we were always told that the Petes were "black" because they were covered in charcoal from climbing down your chimney to bring you gifts on December 6th. As little kids we didn't really question it but when you grow a bit older it's rather obvious that version doesn't hold up considering the wigs and in many cases the lips. Like Santa, at a certain point you are told that both Santa and Saint Nicholas are not real of course and I think that the target audience is also a part of why so many don't care.
They look like those old caricatures of black people in cartoons. The original story of the holiday further reinforces that as the Black Petes were actually Moorish slaves.
Personally I'd be in favor of rebranding the holiday to remove the wigs, lipstick and the black makeup. If they actually tried to adapt the whitewashed version to remove the caricature makeup, keep the clothes but stick to a few stripes of charcoal here and there to represent the idea of climbing down the chimney, I think that would be a good solution. The holiday is very popular with the kids so I don't want to simply get rid of it but it could certainly use some changes. I don't see it happening any time soon though since the vast majority of our population couldn't care less. I'm not sure if most people even know the true origin of the holiday with the Moorish slaves.
