This is what I'm looking for. I just don't understand why am I dividing 60 by 2 AND 4 by 2. What rules did some math genius years ago create to make this so?

You don't divide 60 by 2, you multiply 60 by 2. That gets rid of the 2 in the denominator of the equation. You're trying to isolate the variable, x. Essentially you do the opposite of what is on the x side to the other side of the equation. Which is why you then divide (60*2) by 4 to cancel out the 4 on the x side. Then you subtract 20 to cancel out "+ 20"
 
I completely get your solution Carrillo but in the prep book I'm using they solved it using ahat's method where the divided 60/2 and 4/2 so that's where the confusion is coming it.

Just trying to learn as much as possible to score well on this timed exam. Literally every minute counts
