Do you work for Verizon? You know their marketing plans for the N1 now? You do realize that phone geeks don't worry about contracts, right?
And why do people take every chance to bring up the iPhone? Sure, its the most popular phone out now, and has been for some time. And that's all with good reason. But why can't the N1 just be the N1? It's a good, solid device with better specs than the last hype phone (Droid). It doesn't have the widespread appeal of the iPhone (nor will it ever) but who cares...that doesn't make it "nada".
I think I'ma wait a few weeks to see the reviews on this joint. I like to go to the store and mess with a device hands on before I throw down my loot, but unfortunately that isn't a possibility with the N1.
i dont work for verizon, i dont need to see the obvious things
verizon spent 100 million on marketing the droid, do you think they will spend another 100 million to market another phone with just better specs? the droid will get the 2.1 firmware update soon
why did i bring up the iphone? obviously, its THE smartphone to beat, so YOU have to compare future competitor phones to it, and there will ALWAYS be phones with better specs, but that doesnt always mean its the better phone, there were many phones out there who all they do is copy the iphone, and 1 upped them in specs, and failed
and i wrote NADA, because there is NO GAMECHANGER appeal in this phone, i didnt say it will fail, it wouldve made a splash in the game if the rumors were true (buy unlocked AT&T and tmobile for $199 while working for both networks 3G)
BTW, phone contracts do not matter to phone geeks, but the general consumer is what phone companies are after, phone geeks make up a small percentage of hte population, and even some of them wont shell out half a grand for a phone
if google wants to capture consumers, they have to do something dramatic, and the Nexus 1 is nothing new
Of course they won't spend the $100 million on the N1 that you say they spent on the Droid. For one, it isn't a phone exclusive to their network--they'd be idiots to market it heavy like the Droid. But I highly doubt they're just gonna sit back and soft release it.
And as far as the iPhone being the smartphone to beat, I'm not sure that I can agree. But that's just my opinion. What phone is the most popular isn't even a question--hands down the iPhone wins. But just like you said, better specs don't equate to a better phone. So on the flipside, better sales don't always equal a better device. It depends on the individual and despite what you think, there are people out there who aren't fiending for an iPhone.
And as far as a gamechanger, was it ever marketed as such? I don't remember that. The way I see it, it hasn't even really been marketed as anything yet, let alone a gamechanger. It has a ton of hype because its the first TRUE Google phone (screw the G1). Right now they're living off that because I don't think anyone who knows anything about phones really thought this was going to be a huge leap. All one had to do was look at the specs and you could deduct that. The processor is nice, but besides that, there isn't much different from the Droid other than form factor and camera. The hype created by the internets and people searching for the perfect phone (which doesn't exist) is what makes every phone have to be a "gamechanger".
What IS a gamechanger is how this device is being sold in America. Buying from a 3rd party to use on your network is a new concept for most people in the States, and a great thing for consumers, IMO. I think it will open up the market for other companies to do the same, which in the end leads to win for the consumer.
- yes, thats why i said verizon won't campaign it as much as the droid
- iPhone is the smart phone to beat, it was the breakthrough smart phone that basically made everyone want a smart phone in their hands, it made blackberry dosomething different (storm) and inspired other devices such as the Pre and Android phones. These companies are trying to take the iPhone down, it is no secret.Regardless of sales, the iPhone is the best and most polished phone on the market. Seriously, if you can't believe that a smart phone that has been THREEYEARS to grow and mature over time is better than a phone wiht an OS that is just over a year old, then you are being naive.
- I didnt say they were marketing the N1 as a gamechanger, i am saying if they want to put a dent in the iPhone sales, then they needed something gamechanging
- How a device is sold is not soley determined on sales, i mean a lot of people were going gaga over the droid before any sales were made, people wereproclaiming this as the first legit iPhone contender before it was sold, it was the closest thing to the iphone for verizon users
- and buying from 3rd party is the new thing, thats why i said if google wanted to do something to hurt iPhone sales, they had to do something gamechanging, like the rumors said
sell unlocked to everyone for $199 and have it compatible with both AT&T and T-mobile 3G networks, but it was highly unlikely it would work on bothnetworks, and of course, the $200 subsidized price
