Julian Jackson between 1989 and 1993, the former WBA 154 champ Jackson was the WBC 160 champ and he'd only ever lost one fight in his long career and that was a bogus stoppage he was easily winning. I'm not saying he could have but if he did hit jones with that right hand it would have been over instantly.

Gerald McClellan between 1989 and 1995, the G-Man was undefeated in the 1990's with 20(yes 20) first round knockouts until quitting with a bloodclot on the brain in a fight with Nigel Benn. He was the WBC 160 champ. And if you recall McClellan actually defeated Jones at the 1988 Golden Gloves.

Nigel Benn(one of my personal all time favorite fighters)between 1989 and 1996. Benn was 22-0 with 22 KO's at one point, he travelled to America to fight in 1989 and 1990 and knocked out Doug DeWitt and Iran Barkley in their own backyard of America to win World titles, he went on to make 10 defences of his WBC crown. Jones was actually Benns mandatory contender at super-middle weight in 1992 but jones decided to move down in weight class and lose his belt automatically instead of fighting Nigel Benn. That is the definition of ducking someone.

1996 Chris Eubanks was undefeated in 10 years and over 43 pro fights and a 2 weight class world champ and he called out jones after nearly every fight. He went so far as to announce he would bet a portion of his own purse on a first round knockout against jones but of course jones never even considered that fight cause it was a true threat.

Frankie Liles whooped jones in the amateurs and actually scored a standing count on Jones. He was World Champion at 168 from 1994 to 1998 and wanted to fight jones his whole career. He had height and power and was a southpaw but again jones refused any attempt at even talking to the man.

Other then Benn his most obvious horrible cowardly ducking was of Stevie Collins. He seemed like an ok fighter but in 1995 he hired a psychologist, hit theweights, got a nutritionist, started training with Freddie Roach and renamed himself the celtic warrior. He become a freaking monster and would have ended jones career if that fight went any kind of distance. He was smart and fearless and his pressure was constant running forward and throwing bombs upstairs and down. He RETIRED Benn and Eubank actually destroying both of them twice and he even went to jones backyard in florida for all of Jones fights. This bastard would climb into the ring after Jones fights and called him a coward in front of the whole world. He even showed up at the post-fight press conferences and yelled to everyone that Jones was a "yellow dog". Jones clearly avoided the celtic for over 3 years before steve finally retired saying Jones was scared of him and would never ever fight him. To this day Freddie Roach says he has no doubt Collins would have KILLED jones in his prime.

There are many more but those are MY personal favorites on the jones ducked me list.

Hell from 1993 to 1997 Jones fought ONE mandatory contender for his belt. Just one. That alone should tell you the whole story.

This is the same man who called out Mike Tyson back when tyson was still good and instead of following through with what he told everyone he was gonna do he went up to heavyweight and fought john ruiz who is quite possibly the worst heavyweight to ever own a belt in the history of the universe then of course jones spouts a list of great heavyweights he will fight next since he has the belt but he for some reason drops his belt and doesn't fight any other heavyweight ever again.

The saddest part is when he finally stepped up to the likes of tarver he got knockout out cold and decided to start fighting names and got knocked out again, and again. Not cause he wasn't great but because he was too damn old and it was too damn late to decide to man up and fight great fighters. He could have been one of the best ever but he avoided the true tests in so many weight classes when he was in his prime. You know speed and reflexes go with age but power sticks around and his style was all speed and reflexes so by the time he decided to fight for glory it was 10-15 years too late.

The thing that bugs me personally about fighters who duck people and call themselves the greatest of all time is that i find in insulting towards fighters who did fight everyone win lose or draw. It pisses me off when people like floyd care more about keeping the undefeated thing going then they do about fans or boxing or the history of what was once the greatest sport in our country.

The day they stopped paying winning and losing purses and everyone started deciding how much they get regardless of the outcome of the fight was the day boxing started to go downhill.
Ahh... A fellow pugilism historian.

Let's clear a few things up:

Starting with the Hawk - wanting Jones to have fought him in the period of 89-93 is just ludicrous. Jones wasn't even contending for minor titles until the tail end of that period. That period is the very beginning of Jones' career, while Jackson had been a fixture on the scene for years. By the time Jones would have been ready for him Jackson was on the slide.

Liles was consistently ranked along with Jones in the top 5 during those years in the mid-90's, but mainly on the strength of his WBA title, which has the absolutely weakest lineage at 168lbs up to that point. Until just a few years ago its lineage was laughable compared to the other three major belts at this weight. During his reign Liles fought an average of not more than one top-ten contender annually - no better than Jones. See:
Liles, 1994 - Nunn (#6) & Little (#7)
Jones, 1994 - Toney (#1)

Liles, 1995 - Seiller (#6)
Jones, 1995 - Pazienza (#7)

Liles, 1996 - Littles (8.)
Jones, 1996 - Brannon (#9) & Lucas (#10)

Liles, 1997 - nobody ranked in the top 10
Jones, 1997 - moved up in weight, split a pair with Griffin

Collins wasn't even ranked in the top ten until his wins over the spent pair of Benn and Eubank, and even then wasn't a marketable commodity on this side of the Atlantic (in the 90's he was 2-2 on American soil - beating two journeymen off-TV but losing to the last two decent US-based fighters he'd faced). In the two years following Collins' supposed reinvention, Jones fought three top-10 contenders and Mike McCallum. It's not like he was twiddling thumbs, and he's not the first champ to move up in weight without unifying (especially when there's nothing lucrative about the latter option).

....

I'ma get on Eubank and Benn after I'm done grubbing.

Here's a post from ESB (EastSideBoxing) talking about why Benn and Jones didn't come off (this poster sums it up better than I ever could
laugh.gif
).

In September of '95 Jones dispatched Tony Thornton with something like 25 unanswered punches, Jones made a suitably bizarre dedication:

"This is for everyone in the chicken business!"

But he also had a bit to say about Nigel Benn.

"You go tell Don King I'll take that fight [Benn] anytime! Nigel Benn is a great warrior and that's why I want to fight him!"

The problem was that Benn was with King. King wanted Jones to sign a "winning options" clause. Though Jones was happy to work with King for the right amount of dollar, he, and perhaps to an even greater degree, Stanley Levin (something to do with Roy's management team - don't know his exact role, he seems to be mostly labeled as a "adviser"?) did not want any part of Don long term, and you absolutely cannot blame them for that. Furthermore, King was determined that a fight this big should be on Showtime, Jones was connected to HBO.

Later, Jones was interviewed by Claude Abrahams for Boxing News:

"I hear about King offering $25m for me and Benn. Instead, he can come up with $10m apiece and we can fight [without giving up long-term control]. I want a three fight package!"

Jones's "three fight package" wasn't a long-term deal for King, but rather an idea whereby he would come to England but not alone.

"My bros must go with me. I must have some cover if I go to another country. Bruno-[Alfred] Cole would be a good fight. Let's make it a great night. I've seen Hamed. He's a pretty good fighter but [Derek] Gainer watched the fight against Robinson, he says he can beat him. Derrick don't turn no-one down. Bruno can punch but Cole has more skill. That will balance it out into a good fight. Me and Benn - enough said. I like Benn and that's why I want to fight him. It's a sportsman's challenge. But they can't speak for themselves. They can't make their own decisions without King. They can't make their own decisions. We can. They don't have the power. They are denying the public some great fights. I really like the big challenges. When I fought Toney it was a project. Benn is a project because he is a warrior and it will be a test for me. I really believe Benn wants to fight me. I respect him."

Several things strike me about this. Firstly, I believe Roy was up for this. That strikes me. Do you? Or just bombast? Secondly, he really seems bored with the Sosas of this world. I think it screams of the page that he wants to be challenged. Thirdly, Jones shows real give. He doesn't make problems. Read between the lines. He's talking about coming to the UK AND taking a pay cut in this passage. I don't think you can hold it against him that he didn't want to sell his soul to the devil.

Of course it never came off. After the Sosa fight Jones said: "Boxing isn't a challenge for me no more. The only challenge is Benn and he don't return my phone calls." You can see the boredom.

Benn, for his part, was probably not the problem. After the Nardiello fight talking to Ian Darke: "Roy Jones...I don't mind being second to Roy Jones. I think he's a class act. I'd really like to fight him. He'll frighten me. That's what I need - somebody to really frighten me. I'd be up for that fight like a mother...so please, God, Don King, Frank Warren HBO, if you can get that fight I'll fight him in his - no, my back yard. Roy Jones is the only one who's gonna give me that real fear. He's going to put the fear of God up me."

I'll talk about Eubank and G-Man tomorrow..

Never do they say full Olympic style tests, and every time I've ever heard or read about them agreeing to testing demands from Mayweather, it was pertaining to the 14 day cut off window. Now that Pacquiao is signed to fight Margarito, he starts talking about how he's agreed to the "testing"

Oh really? To the 14 day cut off tests that Mayweather stated would be off the table once he fought Mosley? Right....those tests... Why did Pacquiao use every excuse in the book and even try and sue to get away from the testing issue? He created his own suspicion.

Yeah, which he has even contradicted himself, taking blood out in less time than that in his fight before Hatton, which was shown on the 24/7 series for that fight.

Nobody ever directly contacted the Mayweather camp. There was a third party involved. This "deadline" was some stupid ploy by Bob Arum to try and force an answer out of Mayweather. Not really how it works. PS- Mayweather isn't retired.

I will say this though, the racist comments were really unnecessary, seeing as how he was doing just fine getting under Pacquiao's ego and into his big ole head by the decisions he was making. Good posts by Manglor too, dropping some good boxing history in an unbiased fashion. Props.

A modern day Mancini or Little Red.

Youre saying that after his career is over.  When they fought..they were both undefeated pro fighters. And most thought, Chico's game would overwhelm PBF...

mayweather is a great fighter, no doubt about it.

and everyone has their opinions, and he's not being racist, he's just misinformed. filipinos do not make sushi...we're not japanese. we do cook rice tho.

anyway, he has to talk it up. i mean if he didn't, then it wouldn't be "mayweather"-like.

if this fight happens, it would probably be a good one. but who knows if it will ever happen.

I don't think anyone thought he was ever an elite fighter....
And those who chose Corrales were vastly underrating Mayweather.

Please dont talk about a sport of which you have no knowledge on.
