The point was that you directed the question to "white people" as a homogeneous group, but, as you acknowledge...there are going to bediffering answers based on their particular background.
Just as Black people aren't just Black people... There are Nigerians, Ethiopians, Guyanese, etc.
Just as Asians aren't just Asians... there are Chinese, Korean, Filipino(gasp!), Thai, etc

If you say you're proudof being spanish, hungarian, ethiopian, south african, etc., that's a different story. It's a different story because you can actually back it up withfacts from your heritage and nation. Being black/white is just summing up many nations into skin color groups.

i'm in middle america, Columbus, Ohio, and for as long as i can remember, a majority of white people who stumble into these sort of conversations answer with either, a.) white or b.) american.
it's always bothered me....i just assumed that these arent values stressed by white american families...

right, but my point was that NYC and Cali are anomalies in this argument.
i said i was in middle america to illustrate my point, a MAJORITY of white american's don't value their specific culture....
at least not as much as other races/culutres i've encountered..
psssh, someone mentioned the portugese, i lived in the Ironbound section of newark when i was younger....dead $#%, i didnt even know portuguese is classified as white, i saw that my school was like 65 percent white, i was like
ask a portuguese person "what are you?" i doubt any of them will answer anything other than "portuguese".....
why? i believe it is because their culture is stressed and valued much more than a midwestern "white" person's is....
