Serious question for white people: What makes you proud of your race/culture?

But for real. The *%#@ kind of question is this? Why are you proud of your race/culture? Why are you proud of YOURS?

Im half Brazilian, half American. I said American, and not 'of Scottish decent' because I don't consider myself Scottish, I consider myselfAmerican. I am proud to be white simply because it is who I am. My pride has not been strengthened by bigotry and racism against me, as often happens withblack people. I am simply proud to be white because it is who I am, and I have always been proud to be myself. As far as family traditions that are tied toheritage or race...well, when your country is a melting pot, these racially tied traditions are often lost with interracial breeding.

In conclusion; my white pride is not built on any foundations that my family instilled in me when I was young. My parents never told me that I was specialbecause I was white, or better than anyone else. Im just proud because it is who I am.

There is no generally white values that I can think of. I mean if you are still close to your European heritage and culture, like many people are in NYC whereI grew up for over 2/3 of my life. Irish =/= Italian, Italian=/=German, German=/=Russian, ect.... There is no general values that all "white" peopleshare. Each group has a different set of values depending on that culture's history, religion, and traditions. Like myself being Polish, I learned that interms of family traditions. We aren't like anyone else, but the closest group that I had contact with that shared the same Catholic (I don't reallybelieve now though) traditions I was raised with resonates in the Italian community.

Now in terms of American values and culture in the US, that is a hard one to answer. People in Middle and Southern America are quite different than people inthe Northeast. The northeast has a tendency of has of having a much higher % of European immigrants. So people tend to stay true and close to their Europeancultures. The Americans in the other parts of the country have American values. Which is a term that very difficult to explain. I'm actually taking a classat my Univ about this called American Pluralism.

Then again it's the same with African-Americans in the US. I bet an African-American who was born in the US has a different set of values than someone withCaribbean descent, right? So IMO, you can't generalize like that

I've always wondered was there ever a sense of self awareness taught within white families like there are in black families. Basically...what foundation is your pride built on? What makes you proud to be white? Or is this something ya'll don't think about at all? I guess you can say this is sort of a spinoff of the WET thread but this was a totally different topic and could stand on it's own. But...go ahead...enlighten me please.

Hella pages late but....

In my family there was no special awareness about being white, no pride was instilled in me about my white race

(sounds mad corny) and this is something ireally dont even think about. I grew up in a predominately hispanic neighborhood and both of my parents worked in Head Start working with predominatelyhispanic family's. What my parents did install in me very early was equality, and to treat everyone the same with no basis on there race. Matter of fact, there is a lot to be ashamed of and even embarrassed of being a white male. If i were black i would be saying the same thing, as would if i were mexican or imsure any other race in the world.

I'm going to raise my son (who is mixed btw) the exact way my parents raised me and that's to look at everyone as a human being and that the differentcolors of people's skin are what makes this world beautiful. Who knows, maybe if all of us did that the world would be a better place 50 years from nowthen it is today.

to the author of the post- good question(s). i'm not white but i have always wondered the same thing about white folks. since it's such a touchy issueto say WHITE PRIDE or PROUD TO BE WHITE, i wouldn't know if that is something typical that could be taught in white families. a white person says thosethings, they're automatically classified as a racist. a person of color says it, it's considered valid pride. a double-standard has been set. toughcall white people.

one thing you can be proud of white people. if you're on this shoe board, you obviously either like sports or sneakers. you can be proud of your lazy @##,angry ancestors for bringing black folks here and becoming your favorite american icons.

dirty, you listed different cultures of people, but rarely do i hear white people on some "oh, well im irish and polish"
i don't think it's stressed much in the white family.....
That's not true for me....
I personally am white... but look like i could be possibly mixed or something.... have had people say I could pass for part Hispanic... part Israeli, partsomethin not generic white, etc
(have dark hair, not really white skin... a "darker" white skin, etc)
So I've had plenty of people ask me what I am before?
I respond with English, French, German... a mix...

I mean I don't know why I would respond with "I'm white"... I think that's pretty clear
laugh.gif

But I mean I consider myself.... English, French, German... white... and American.
I've used all 3 scenarios together, separately, etc.

Might drop back in later to answer OP's question.

Its amazing how 5,000 "why do black ppl do this, or why do black ppl do that" threads can be created and there is no objection to them... but whenthe table is turned, then members automatically think the OP is asking an ignorant question.

I bet if someone asked "why are black people proud of their race". It wouldn't be a problem.

Most white peeps I know just know me as black but they get mad offended when I call them white

Me: "You're the only white kid on the block"
My boy: "I'm not white I'm Russian"

If I was to say I'm Nigerian people would laugh in my face

( I hate racial threads

When you consider all the horrible things white people have done throughout history (see: Scramble for Africa, American slavery) can you blame him?

I agree.
This is one thing that bothers me a lot.
I love the fact I'm white, I love who I am.
I have "white pride", I am "proud to be white".

Yet some people would be like "

I knew you were racist"
Makes me

Thats another topic...one I would have no problems participating in...so I'm not sure what your point was just now. I simply asked a questionI didn't know the answer to.

it is not something I think about at all. I do not have to constantly tell myself good things about my own race, I already know my race is awesome. I am partof the HUMAN race and I am damn proud of how much we have accomplished.

I am proud to be an American; I was born here and have lived here all my life.

That said, I most readily identify with the Ukraine because I am 1/4 Ukrainian and my grandmother (full-blooded daughter of immigrants who fled the Ukraineduring the time of the Bolshevik Revolution) exposed me to some of their culture, traditions, and food as a young person. I also have English, Irish, Dutch,German, and Blackfoot blood in me. I'm very appreciative of the fact that all of my ancestors except the Blackfoot came here to make a better life fortheir families and I also respect the Blackfoot for being a proud, beautiful indigenous people. I gladly tell people all of the nationalities that make up mybloodlines because, after all, I wouldn't be me without all of them.

I'm a mutt who happens to be white and I am proud of the sacrifices my ancestors made that enabled me to exist, not the color of my skin.

If I was Italian I would have entered the post and responded with, "well coming from an Italian background....so on and so forth". I really don't understand how that's confusing

Your question is illogical as you are trying to compare cultural/ethnical/national background to one based on race. If you want to know why white-Americans, or white-Russians are proud of their culture you shouldn't compare those responses to "black" culture, but to an African-American one.

Those values and pride which you believe were taught to blacks does not resonate across the globe, probably not even throughout all of the United States.

Black Culture=African-American Culture
The name of it is another topic for another day

And he is saying white-americans you just diggin to hard bruh

MAYBE YOU'LL READ THIS TIME
To answer the OP's ridiculous question, the answer is "Self-Esteem"...
People with low self-esteem and no sense of self need an emotional shelter to feel whole.
Race is an automatic catalyst to make you feel like YOU belong...Honestly I've dated Black, Asian, White,
and Spanish women and my friend circle is constructed of STRONG people for different ethnic backgrounds.

...Some times race isn't the reason people are alienated, it's because they're weak.
and in this world only the strong survive. Pride is totally different, pride is what you see
at the many annual parades in NYC expressing love for your race.

And BET is actually become a SICK CRY FOR HELP FROM WEAK AFRICAN AMERICANS.
BET allows WEAK MINDED BUFFOONERY TO FLOURISH...All the strong BLACKS take leading
roles on MTV, NBC, ABC, UPN etc. even ESPN.....BET caters to uneducated and disenfranchised BLACKS.
I can actually agree with that statement for the most part my good sir.

i am proud to be who i am. i don't believe in labels.

but if you must know, i am italian and irish.

As far as simply being white, I'm not particularly proud of anything about it; I didn't request to be white, and it isn't something I achieved.

I don't really know much about my background, so I can't be proud of any of that, either.

I'm proud of certain aspects of my personality, and that's where it ends.

Pretty much i am just proud to be an american...i was raised to see everyone equally and went to a highly diverse high school...

i remember being REALLY young i'm not even sure if i was 10 yet but seeing some racist people on a talk show and i almost started crying thinking about howmuch i would miss tony gwynn and ken griffey if they werent around and had no rights...sounds dumb but i was young and i never understood the hate some peoplehave...
