I def. know what OP is talking about.
Only give the nod up to men of color though, esp.  if I'm in a setting where I'm around lots of white folks.
Like some sort of "acknowledgment" among my fellow black and brown people.

I realized this about myself a while back as well, thought I was a little bit off for differentiating but rationalized it as subconsciously admitting a level of respect.

i usually smile at older folks while im running

I live in Thailand, so idk im the minority, usually if i smile or acknowledge people they put on some big $&!! eating grin on
