Realistically, what has the sweep done to Kobe's legacy?

The amount of MJ slurpage on here is ridiculous

. Kobe is a legend in his own right and will go down as one of the greatest players to have ever played the game. His body of work is undeniable. I just hope some of ya realize this and appreciate this type of talent before he retires.

*Correction this is the 2nd 30 point + loss in an elimination game for Kobe (and another one was a 29 point loss) and the 3rd Playoff sweep (plus the 5 game sweep in 04). He is a top 10 player but he has some blemishes on his resume.

It took 7 years for MJ to win a title, and nobody gives a $+*% since he had three 3-Peats.

If Kobe can get another one before he retires the same thing will happen when he retires. People will only remember the rings baby.

Three 3-peats would = 9 Championships.

You should know by now with Kobe people NEVER only remember the rings.

"Kobe's teammates were a big reason that he has 5 as well as MJ's teammates, but what was seen by Pau Gasol this series is something MJ never had to deal with on any of his 3-Peat journeys."

So what about these other "lesser" players than Kobe who don't got as many rings? In '10 Wade played on a team whose entire LINEUP played like "MIA Gasol" in the playoffs. LBJ played with an "MIA Gasol" in the playoffs his WHOLE CAREER (Gibson in '07 was his best sidekick). But no, we shouldn't put rings into context and just directly compare players using titles

Like I said before, you can't have it both ways here. I think MJ is the GOAT, but NOT because he got those rings.

Some of you may think my request to be foolish.  Surely, the Los Angeles Lakers know that their season teeters on the brink tonight.  Surely, they know that anything less than desperation will see them make a quick and inauspicious exit from these playoff proceedings.  Surely, a team led by Kobe Bryant, one of the fiercest competitors in the history of the game, will make sure that, if the Lakers are to make their end, they will make that end attempting to be the legends they have built themselves up to be.
As strange as it is to conceive, history says it isn't so.  No team which has included Kobe Bryant as a member has ever gone out with a bang, unless it is in victory.  It's stunning how badly Bryant's teams have performed in the final moments of seasons in which a banner was not earned.  Check out the list:
  • 1997:  Defeated in the second round in 5 games by the Utah Jazz, including Kobe's infamous last shot airballs
  • 1998: Same team, even worse result.  The Jazz swept the Lakers in the second round
  • 1999: Swept in the second round this time by the San Antonio Spurs
  • 2000-2002: Rings
  • 2003: Defeated in the second round in 6 games by the Spurs.  Game 6 was a 28 point beatdown
  • 2004: Defeated in the NBA Finals in 5 games by the Detroit Pistons.  Heavily favored coming in, the Lakers lost 3 of the four games by double digits, and the one game they won required a deep three pointer by Bryant to send the game into overtime.  This was basically the first five game sweep in history.
  • 2005: Missed playoffs.  For what it's worth, the Lakers also ended the season 2-19 down the stretch
  • 2006: Defeated in the first round in 7 games by the Phoenix Suns.  Although their overall performance in the series was quite admirable, the Lakers lost a 3-1 series lead, and Game 7 was the infamous "Kobe gave up" game.  Whether you believe in that narrative or not, that game, in which the Lakers lost by 29, was most certainly a whimper
  • 2007: The Suns dispatched the Lakers with ease in the first round, winning in 5 games
  • 2008: Defeated by the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals in 6 games, with the final game a 39 point annnihilation
  • 2009-2010: More rings
  • 2011: Swept by Mavs, routed in final game by 36.
And that's the list.  It really is absolutely incredible.  No Laker team that has included Kobe Bryant has ended the season with a strong, fight to the last man effort, unless that season has ended with a championship.  In all the other seasons, his teams have bowed out with tails between their legs.

Oh ........ so all of a sudden those are "Kobe-led teams" ????

That's a Lakers fan's wording, not mine. Instead of "a team led by Kobe Bryant", you can substitute "team which has included Kobe Bryant as a member" if it makes you feel better, like it says in the next paragraph.

We all have to constantly hear about his team success, so it's only fair to bring up the fact that he has a decent amount of flameouts as well.

Was it Kobe's fault that the lakers' lost the series? No
Was it Kobe's fault that the lakers' got swept? Yes

If he hit that game winner in game 1 they wouldn't be in this mess.  Also they were up by 8 with 5 mins to go in game 3 and they were running plays through Odom?? Kobe should have taken over and demanded the ball.

To answer the op's question does this hurt his legacy? No

Magic lost 4 finals and was swept, Shaq was swept in Orld, LA, and Miami. When you play a dozen damn years in the playoffs, you bound to take lumps. Only dude that don't know the feeling is Bill Russell. The wins outweigh the losses. Kobe has more titles than anyone who has played in the post MJ era. He hasn't won every series, but his team has succeeded moreso than any other franchise since 96. Duncan got lumps, Dirk got lumps, Bron got lumps, KG got em, TMac got a whole @#$% load of em.....
