Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

_s really gotta put respect on what Jim and Juelz (to a lesser extent) did in the whole hip hop fashion/gang banging lane. Jim really fathered 90% of this generation and he doesn't get his just due

i agree. dipset fathered wayne whole rock era with the pants chains and stud bracelets and **** which in turn of course trickles down to uzi and thug.

people leave them out the convo bc the biggest difference we remwmber between then and now is the tightness of the pants and we never really saw anyone in dipset wear skinnies or bright colored pants.

Ya'll _'s lying.

_'s was not wearing skinny jeans like that in 07-08. People used to clown Kanye heavy for that **** then the trend slowy took off. Skater/rockstar look was not skinny jeans.

Wtf do any of us have to lie for ? I was literally in high school in 06 looking like damn fool with some tight *** red skinnies I rocked with my 14's and cardinal 7's.. you was locked up or something ?

Bruh I was in high school when ****** made the transition from name brand Jean's and Blazers, to colorful skinnys and big *** shoes. Had **** to do with Kanye. 13-14 year olds wasnt ****** with him like that off 808s. Skinnys started popping out here once Jerking became a thing.

Eh Graduation era was a big moment for people who was 11-15 or whatever at the time. and that was when he really slimmed up from the polos and **** came with that whole bright pink/purple bape esque universe city aesthetic.

****** can act like everyone didnt have the two lines in they head if they want.

I remember seeing _'s go from tall tee's to Ed Hardy/wallet chains over night. :lol Jim started that ****.

Kanye got skinny jeans poppin, I stand by that. And Wayne gets credit he don't deserve. From 05-08 he went from Pharrell jr to Jim Jones jr to Kanye jr.

Regardless. Skinnys in LA popped because of the Jerking scene.

Not doubting that the jerking movement was bigger than kanye for yall

but i find it hard to believe that ****** wasnt wearing skinnys in LA until 09. unless jerking was a movement since 06-07 and it just hit my country *** area late as hell in 09.

not tryna disagree with you bc u was from out there i genuinely wanna know the timeline i love that era in streetwear and urban culture in general.

Skater/Rockstar look took NYC hoods by storm around the same time Kanye was wearing big *** jeans, pink polos, and bear backpacks. Quite sure it was the same in LA but *****s just love giving Kanye credit for everything

I remember Kanye saying he caused people to wear Ralph and retros

When he didn't even come out until after the second wave of retros. The Jordan I and III had already been retroed two times already. Who was buying them?

and in general in rap theres always a zeitgeist thats ever evolving.

for example in 10 years who we gonna credit with diamond chokers and dad shoes and one stripe fake gucci track pants lol

It’s generational though.

I worked at a shoe store for a few months and dude came in hype about some dusty *** knockoff AF1 high FILAs because he saw Pac wear em in a magazine 20 years ago. Aint even have the heart to tell him he misremembering and it was probably the grant hills but **** it :lol

the point im making is that people remember their idols from when they was kids. Wayne, Kanye, etc. have absolutely probably sold pairs of shoes and pieces that theyve rocked. which is why corporations learned from the Kanye and Pharrells making brands and pieces hot and you look up and Lil baby is getting a reebok deal after 3 mixtapes bc rap music is that powerful.

for kids that never saw jordan play rappers probably did sell more shoes than Jordan himself did for a new geenration. he retired 15 years ago.

Yeah it's no big deal

The Jerking ***** hit heavy when I was in the 11th grade and that was in 08/09. I for real remember the transition ****** made. Dudes Went from wearing name brand jeans with Nike Blazers and some who was rockin the skater/van look. I remember wanting a pair of Nike Blazers bad because that's all dudes was wearing. Then all of a sudden, the New Boyz, The Rejects, and even YG came out and ****** was all wearing colorful *** pants and shoes. We barely recovering from that **** now

Kanye's fashion influence is more apparent now than it was then I would say tbh.

You can't credit one person with anything anymore because of social media. Everybody wearing the same ****.

Jerking movement, Dom Kennedy, me retroactively discovering G Funk/Pac/Snoop/etc. and this video made me wanna be from LA in 09-2010 lol.

this too

Dude's memory is accurate. The Filas with the strap were VERY popular around 92-93ish. I remember them vividly. They were popular around the time people were wearing Cross Colours and Hi-Tec boots.

It's a blurry pic but Pac did wear them in the video for When My Homies Call.

Here's a clearer pic of Consequence wearing them.

That is not even close to being true.

Even crazier coming from a PG/DC dude. They’re one of the first ****** to rock slimmer (relatively compared to ultra baggy) jeans.

I remember when my bro went to college in 05 and met some dc *****, he was telling me how they’d have big solbiato shirts/hoodies and small jeans (relatively at the time) over crazy laced kicks. You just gotta look to Wale circa 06/07 to get it.

And Jim was just as...if not more influential in urban fashion slimming up as Kanye. Jim brought trues, Antiks, 7s and ed hardy to the game. Everything else just followed from there and was a mix of things. By 09...you looked kinda goofy rocking big clothes. In my city...for the slick *****, 06/07 was the shift. Starting with American eagle/Hollister/Abercrombie type brands to trues, 575, 7s, Antiks, rock & republic, ed hardy, etc...then the streetwear wave and boutique stores like Stussy etc.

All fax.

Dipset has been incredibly influential fashion wise.

Dudes were wearing full pick outfits with no qualms.

Pelles, Marms, all the skull **** etc.
