Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

At his peak, Lil Wayne was at rockstar status. Right as he was blasting off into the stratosphere, he unfortunately went to jail. After he got out, he pretty much took the backseat to Drake. We went from hearing Wayne on every feature to hearing Drake on every feature. Had we got the true Carter 3 and had that run lasted a few more years, Wayne probably would have already performed at the Super Bowl. Blame it on Wayne himself , Cash money and, yeah, Drake.

The only reason I ever even got into Drake was because of Wayne. One of my homeboys was like check this Drake guy out he's Waynes prodigy. I was like bet. It was an easy sell because in 08-09 nobody was touching lil Wayne. That's the facts.

LL is also one of the GOATs. He coined the term

That’s the reason most got into Drake. Without that cash money cosign he probably wouldn’t have gotten as big.

Seriously, search "LL Cool J" on NT as see how many times his name pops up in those discussion. Hell you can probably count on 2 hands how time he mentioned in music dicussions period. Its one of those things you say out of respect but you know good and damn well. On a purely lyrical level DMX > LL Cool J.

Yep, they knew what they were doing. Genius business move.

I think Nicki would have popped regardless, because she was out in the streets developing a core fanbase. I always give her credit for how hard she worked. She knew how to use the LGBTQ community too.

but I think that helped Drake out a lot by giving him credibility. I recognized the corny scent on dude, but a lot of people didn't seem to realize it.

He was at the top but we're not gonna act like someone like 'Ye wasn't right there with him

TI was at the mountain top at that time as well so he definitely wasn't untouchable outside of the mixtape circuit

It’s generational though. You don’t see very many on here saying rakim is their goat either.

We aren’t slandering uncle L. That man had a greatest hits album before the age of 30. He won battles, crossed over, paved ways. He’s not my goat because the music catered to a different demographic but no one has a resume like his.

And he could rock a mean Super Bowl medley too.

It's funny cuz I was actually a T.I. and Kanye fan first, but I moved to Texas in 06 and Wayne was just dominant down here. You wasn't a "cool kid" if you didn't know Waynes lyrics. But T.I. was definitely that dude too. Graduation changed my life. But Wayne was "that guy".

I'd say LL is "Great", which is exactly where I'd put Wayne as well. Not the Greatest of All Time(sometimes I think people for get what GOAT stands for), but definitely one of the Greats.

Those people are a certain age

I didn't like when LL named his album that. It was bold, I didn't agree then either. I don't do the self titled ****, I never call Jay, Hov or Lebron, King. That **** was always corny to me.

I think a lot of people missed out on LL's peak years though. He was Drake's daddy, and I also had a lot of problems with his music and hate most of the chick songs.

All these dudes we are naming had more real life impact then Hov. But yall not ready for that convo yet

What is real life impact?

Shouldn't it be about music, because real life impact it would be Melle Mel, Run DMC, Rakim, LL, PE, KRS and the Beastie Boys. Rap wouldn't have made it to the 90's if it wasn't for them.

So you don't even get points for Wayne in that regard.

Run DMC were the first rappers to do everything, headline arena tours, gold, platinum, sneakers, style....

So you're claiming Run and DMC as the GOATS, because there's nothing more GOAT than putting an entire culture on your back and giving it roots.

He’s the first superstar rapper. Goat talk is subjective but if a 55 year old man ran off the reasons why LL is the goat, you couldn’t argue with him cause LL has literally done everything. He legit has as a claim

I mean "All Time" means ALL of the time therefore it is NOT generational(That LeBron talk lol), but we can agree to disagree, I guess.

He got me into rap 30+ years ago. Can’t remember the last time I spun an LL album but BAD was and still is a great piece of work. I can remember using a cassette recorder to grab Bristol Hotel off the radio when I was 8 or 9

I meant musical impact. I feel like during Jays peak years, guys like Nas,DMX, Em, and 50 all peaked higher. However Jay is looked at as the GOAT

My biggest issue with Wayne is that he rarely says anything in his music and this dates back to his mixtape era. It was about "how" he said something verse what he was actually saying imo
This

Same with Eminem. I don't rank those two with other greats. I put them in the "rap a lot of words but ain't saying ****" category.
