RAIDER NATION Season THREAD:

Jerry Rice: Jim Harbaugh failing 49ers, but could save Raiders

Jerry Rice, like everyone else, believes Jim Harbaugh is running out of time as the 49ers' head coach. Yet, Harbaugh is the hottest name in a probable Raiders coaching search.

It begs the question: If Harbaugh is a reported drag on players on one side of the Bay, why would things be any better in Oakland?

It’s all about the offense, said Rice, the Hall of Famer who played in Super Bowls with both teams.

"It's not the read option or whatever type of offense the 49ers are running,” Rice told Sporting News. “It's a little bit more 'spread it out.’ It gives Derek Carr options where he can deliver the football and you have some big-play ability.

“Maybe (Harbaugh) will be able to go in and change the morale, get those players to buy into everything and start winning football games."

Interim Tony Sparano has managed to push the Raiders by Harbaugh’s 49ers and the Chiefs in the past three weeks. In between, though, was a 52-0 loss to the Rams. Don’t be fooled by the wins; the Raiders need dramatic change and it’s possible, despite his sudden demise with the 49ers, that Harbaugh is the person to do it.

The problem in San Francisco, namely a dysfunctional offense, can be corrected in Oakland if Harbaugh sticks with the system in which current rookie QB Carr is
Rice points out Harbaugh and the 49ers' coaching staff have blown it with questionable scheming around Colin Kaepernick, who hasn’t thrown a fourth-quarter touchdown all season.

"As far as the chemistry with the strategy, it doesn't fit Colin Kaepernick. I don't even know what that offense is now," Rice told SN. "It was read option at first where he could tuck the ball and run with it. This year he's not running; he's just in the shotgun the majority of the time.

"Everything is condensed. They're not spreading the field out to open up lanes for the running backs or to get big plays for the wide receivers. It's just a whole different type of offense now."

When Rice was winning Super Bowls with Joe Montana and Steve Young and the 49ers were humming along as a scoring juggernaut, they had a clear identity under Bill Walsh — unlike the current team.

"I would prefer the West Coast offense any day," Rice said "It simplifies everything where players don't really have to think that much and can just go out play."

Rice talked to Sporting News as part of his campaign with MetLife Premier Client Group.

"It was a perfect fit for me. For winning football games, you need a team of coaches and advisers guiding you and coming up with the right strategy. You also need a strong offense and a strong defense.

"When I played the game, investments were offense, a retirement plan was defense. I knew I couldn't play the game forever and needed to plan for that."

The Raiders need a plan, too. As distressing as things are for Harbaugh today — “That clock is ticking. Somehow you need to get over that hump and kick that door down” — he could be a part of a successful Raiders rebuilding plan.
