Those lists are awesome.  Where the @#$% were they when we needed them last year?
laugh.gif

Man, we did major work in here last year.

Ok, so for no reason at all I sat down and watched the last ep of Walking Dead.  (Did that the last ep of season 1 too for some random reason)

Slow zombies?
sick.gif
Really?  I can't go back to that.  I want sprinter zombies after the Dawn of the Dead remake, I just ain't worried bout them slow fools.
Not one of them old dudes or stupid %@%%*@% missed a single shot.
indifferent.gif
In moving vehicles.....in the dark.  It like this in every episode?

I guess I see why that leader dude is pretty bad !*+, I intend to get to the show at some point, just was depressed when I see stumbling zombie instead of Carl Lewis Zombie.

That final scene.......
nerd.gif
That what I think it was?

Guys, start putting discussions bout current tv shows in spoilers. If it's something big

I've been reading the Hunger Games books...
nerd.gif
I know. Simple writing but a lot better and well thought out than I expected. It feels like...V for Vendetta and Battlestar Galactica mixed with a little bit of Battle Royale and Akira.

I'm on the last one now and I can say Jennifer Lawrence is gonna be amazing. It's almost the exact same character as Winter's Bone that she got an Oscar nom for, and watching the trailer now.
nerd.gif
Starting to get what those Harry Potter heads must've felt like. Actually no. Not at all. None of that cult magic and accessories whoring, spell chanting %$%@. And none of that Twilight team blah blah bulls hit either. This is grounded in a future reality a lot like V and BSG.

The Battle Royale part is just an excuse to explain this world they created. But it's harsh...if they're gonna do right by the book, then they got as close to R with the violence that a PG-13 movie can get. Who knows? I love the casting and I'm looking forward to it though.

I can honestly say I am a bit excited for to go watch The Hunger Games haha. I thought the books were simple but engaging. I wish the movie was going to be more violent but since they had to cater to the younger audience that read the books I guess I can understand. Probably go watch it in imax sometime over the weekend.

Hunger Games series was solid... The third book kinda lost me, but the first, two were great and have a chance to play out really well on screen.

I wish it had been rated R and they really cut loose on the Games, but we'll see what they can do with it. I'm excited.

I've never seen Battle Royale but I bought it on BD and am waiting for it to come in... Can't wait.

Yea I want to see some nice killing scenes but not expecting much with the PG-13 rating it was given. Battle Royale was good, bought it on sale a while ago and haven't opened it but watched it about a year ago on youtube.

It's getting generally good reviews, but...
ADD auds won't mind that there's no time to get to know anybody, or watch a relationship unfold, or ride the dramatic rise and swell of a compelling narrative.
Two and a half hour runtime, and the book was only like 300 pages. How could they manage to strip it of its depth?

Not what I wanted to hear.

It's not the length of the book, it's the way the story's told. Immediate first person with a lot of internal expression in the place of describing the world around her or the specifics of a lot of events happening. So the book may be ~400 pages, but a ton of the dialogue and actions outside of Jennifer Lawrence's character are just brushed over with short descriptions or saying how it made her feel. You can really tell that this....is a young adult book.

Then the length of the narrative...they'll wake up the next day in half a sentence in a paragraph with no warning over and over, but then it's almost a breakneck flow of detailed action when the big stuff starts. A couple chapters could happen over 5 minutes or over 3-4 days in the same location...that's the lost in translation from page to screen. And it's on the writers, especially the author, if adapting that didn't quite come together...but it'll definitely be easier in the 2nd one, which is much more streamlined and balanced.

I mean...I can respect if they went a little too fast with things in the movie, because the alternative...reading it, all I could think of was Peter Jackson's King Kong. I mean yeah, there's that seemingly endless, lived in, new outdoor society feeling of Lord of the Flies, but then there's the episodic one thing after another with no real rhyme or reason nature of King Kong. You remember the worms, then the little dinosaurs, the flowers, dancing for Kong...just random things that take a chunk of time to deal with. That's Hunger Games.

I'm just really really curious as to how they could pull the movie off, because it's about 3 or 4 different movies in one...each part is so prominent that it's hard to let one or the other fall into the background. And then just the storytelling obstacles because of the evenly divided structure of the story, the crutch of her internal dialogue (analyzing and feeling things in her head instead of working them into dialogue or even having any dialogue) and so many important actions happening 'off-screen' or out of her sight or while she's asleep/knocked out....

Let alone the fact that this is a young adult book...and not one with pictures or supplemental stuff. It ain't LOTR or GoT where they'll explain detail and character compulsively. And it's not in the 3rd person or god perspective so it's terribly easy to lose track of characters, logistics and even the passage of time...It's that immediate 1st person teenage girl talking to herself through a dystopian gladiator survival arena after a pitstop at a future Roman decadent (League of Shadows would go in on you) city-state from an impoverish rural internment camp county with storm troopers at guard type story....I need sleep.

Curious and curiouser. I think it'll be good.

I loved it. Loved it. Loved. It.

I really like how they opened the show by going out and showing some zombies just roaming around for a bit. Of course it set up the season finale, but it's something that I wish they would show more of. I mean, your show is about zombies, and the first half of this season, we saw maybe like 10 zombies? Season finale we saw about 500. That's what I'm talking about man.

The entire farm scene was excellent IMO. Carol was a bit of a waste, and Lori running around everywhere screaming "Where's my boy?!" got on my nerves, but it was a good scene. Darryl showed how integral he was to this pack, Rick was crafty in his escape, Herschel's family showed how terrible they are, Carl didn't @!*+ up this time around, and I loved Herschel in that scene. He was willing to fight and die to try and save his farm. He was a badass, and that's what was awesome. Chaos reigned, and it was amazing. I loved it. I wish one more of the main cast got killed off, maybe Maggie or T-Dog, and not just Herschel's neglected family. Killing off three of the main casts characters would have been a punch in the gut. They were planning to kill Herschel off, that Shane was supposed to kill Herschel (But Shane saying Randy did it), and then Shane and Rick would still tango, but they said it just wasn't coming across well, so he's stays alive. And I'm damn glad too, I thought he did a fine job in the finale.

I love that Rick is fed up with the !*+$@%!%. It's about time. He's manning up. I loved how he recounted the tale of Shane's death. Each scene with Rick, I just loved his performance tonight. I thought he was excellent. Seemsl ike he's the only guy on the damn show that can act a bit.

Also loved the reveal of what Jenner said at the CDC. They hinted about it prior to the other episodes, but I didn't connect the dots and realize to see that humans coming back to life without being bit was what he told Rick. That makes this season so much better in hindsight, knowing that Rick has had to deal with the fact that every single person he knows is infected with the disease, it's just a matter of time before they come back. Biologically, it doesn't make sense, but whatever, that's okay, I'll suspend my dis-belief. Back on topic, it seems like the first season was just exposing Rick to the dangers of this new world, and the second season was more him trying to find a way to keep his loved ones, and everyone safe.

I don't know why, but Bear McCreary (sp?) makes me choke up every single time with his goddamn music man. When Rick found his family again I damn near lost my man-card. I did earlier last season when Rick first found Lori, and when Morgan was going to kill his wife.

Carl as I mentioned earlier didn't mess up this time, but he's a little too annoying for my taste. The kid just can't act. He's trying to sound too grown up, and then goes back to being childish a few seconds later. Maybe if his voice got a little deeper, but I don't know man, I just don't think the kid can act, and the lines they are writing for him are a little too deep to be believable in my opinion.

Lori was stupid, again. She embraces Rick, then after telling her about the man she wanted killed, she has a panic attack. Woman, come on. I know just last episode you were being swooned by Shane again, and you probably have his baby, but give me a break. He was a danger to your entire family, grow a sack woman..
laugh.gif

I liked the stuff with Glenn/Maggie, except Maggie was a little too hysterical for my liking. She was supposed to be one of the tougher females, but she just whined and moped around all episode. Glenn's stuff was really awesome though. I like that kid. He can act. I'm glad that he's finally putting his sack back on and taking control of the situation.

T-Dogg, yeah, he was there.
laugh.gif
. Probably the most lines he's had all season, but still the least prominent character on the show. Oh well.

Andrea was kicking *%! tonight, and it's about time. It took some time, but she's finally developing into the badass we all knew she eventually would be. I was so happy to see her whooping *%!, and just demolishing zombies. That one kill where she bashed the brains in of a walker with the butt of his pistol was awesome. And then...

MICHONNE. WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW. I was wondering when they were going to introduce her. I hate to use the word, but that was the most epic reveal of a character I've seen in a show in a long *%! time. I heard the actress was on Treme, and I hear that show was really well done, so I hope she lives upto expectations. Seeing her with her slaves was awesome, I hope they are the same people they are in the comic. I can't want to see Michonne with the rest of the cast, she's going to kick-*%! and take MFing names....

. Since I've heard about the show, I've been anticipating when we'll see Michonne pop up, and how she will be portrayed. October, we finally get it.

If you watched TWD, wow. They're bringing back Merle too?
eek.gif
. Damn man, that's awesome. I love Michael Rooker, and was sad to see he was so under-utilized. It was nice to see that he has such great things to say about this show, I really hope that he stays long-term with Darryl. I want to see the two of them kick *%! together. We haven't seen it, we know they both are badasses, so give it to us. I liked how Kirkman answered that question... Hmm... 33% of Duane, Morgan, and Merle, which one could it be?
laugh.gif
. It saddens me that they won't bring back Morgan/Duane next season, but eventually they will. The one thing I'm worried about is Duane (the younger one) will probably look a lot older by the time that the show comes around to bring them back again. I mean four years (assuming he doesn't come back until season 4) is a long time for a teenager, and he could look completely different, kind of ruining the character, but I guess the same could be said with Carl. I'm glad they teased us and told us Merle will be back though.

In general, looking back on it, I really liked this season. Yes, the stuff with Carol's daughter took way too fricking long, that was a mistake absolutely. But the way the season ended, I enjoyed the hell out of it. You can call it Rick's heel turn.
laugh.gif
. From the scene in the bar, to that stare into the camera after Lori told Rick to do something about Shane, to "This isn't a democracy anymore
pimp.gif
," I've loved to watch Rick. I loved that they killed off two of the main cast, and really featured the zombies in the second half of the season.

As for next season, with this season finale, my expectations are high. But, I'm worried. Dragging out 13 episodes at the prison will be interesting, especially if they don't increase the budget on the goddamn show. But regardless, having Michonne and The Governor in the mix should be DAMN fun.

Now I got nothing to watch until True Blood and Dexter...
tired.gif
. I have Mad Men on Blu-ray, and I also want to get into Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire. I watched the pilot for Boardwalk and fell in love. I just haven't had time, and this summer I'll probably get around to it, so we'll see.

Still have plenty of good television to watch.

So JA...about Eternal Sunshine........

I mean that list has Kill Bill #4, and TDK #6!

I'll admit, I was 16 when I watched it, and maybe my mind wasn't matured enough to really enjoy it. I may watch it again, although I never really had any intention to.

Slow zombies?
sick.gif
Really?  I can't go back to that.  I want sprinter zombies after the Dawn of the Dead remake, I just ain't worried bout them slow fools.
Not one of them old dudes or stupid %@%%*@% missed a single shot.

In moving vehicles.....in the dark.  It like this in every episode?

MAAAAAAAN, know your goddamn roots. I'll admit, they kind of shot them poorly this episode. This will be a rant so let me forewarn you. This episode is the first in 19 episodes where the zombies were so heavily featured. They have never been around that much. A lot of that has to do with the budget of this show. It was slashed. I hope after the response the season finale they bump it up, because with The Prison (Yes, that's what the final shot was), to do it justice, they need more money. With more budget they can have more zombie kills, more zombies in general, and more locations. That was one of the main dredges with this season. Pretty much entire season took place on the damn farm. If they compacted it all into the first 7-8 episodes that would have been fine, but all the episodes were a little much. Normally in the show, they only had quick flashes of zombies, and never just showed they just lurching around like they did tonight. I won't lie. Zombie films are my favorite sub-genre of film, so it was kind of nice to see them do that. They really focused on them as one of the major characters of the show, and I liked that. A lot of times this season you just felt like it was a post-apocalyptic drama. Now onto you not liking them being slow...

Like I said, know your goddamn roots. 28 Days Later and Dawn of the Dead come around and everyone forgets about the originals...
30t6p3b.gif
Dawn of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead, Zombie, etc. all had great zombies. They were each iconic in their own way. I'll admit that Return of the Living Dead did it first, but 28 Days Later and Dawn of the Dead took it to another level. Don't get me wrong, I love both of those films, but don't be smashing on walking zombies. They are re-animated corpses that are full of decay and rotted flesh. When zombies are fast like in 28 Days Later, you don't get to embrace them as characters. In the classics, you get to actually see the zombies, see how they move, and not just quick scenes cut together in a blender to show the threat of them getting closer. I feel like TWD has done a great job making slow-zombies scary again. /End rant.

I've never seen Battle Royale but I bought it on BD and am waiting for it to come in... Can't wait.

Battle Royale was a damn amazing film. I'm assuming you know the premise, so I'll get into that, but if you haven't, just skip the rest of this paragraph. It was just fun to get to know each of the characters a little bit at a time, and seeing who was willing to massacre their friends. When it starts to narrow down is when it really starts to get tense. I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY like Takeshi Kitano. Loved everything I've seen him in, from this to Kikujiro, to Zatoichi. I don't know how many of you guys watch Asian and especially Japanese cinema, but it can get quite different from the pacing of American films. I really enjoyed it, but it will be interesting to see what someone thinks about it basically ten years later, to see how it has aged. Did you get the set that comes with the sequel? If you did, that seems like a fantastic set with a great list of extras and a nice presentation, but if you liked the first, you'll probably be disappointed by the second. It's a little too over the top. I know it's probably hard to get your hands on as it was limited, but if you guys EVER run across this set, and you like Battle Royale, I'd highly suggest getting it..

BR_pack-BR-spread.jpg

It's an amazing set. It was the first Blu-ray available for American players, although it's a UK release, Arrow Video releases some of it's films region-free. The package is probably my favorite that I've seen for a Blu-ray. It's an amazing set, but lacks the second film. This new set seems awesome too, mines in the mail, but I'm positive the UK set is better.

These last 2 posts are why I like it in here.

I found a good 25+ films just scratchin the surface, sure if I look closer I could bump that to 35 or more.

Anyone seen Ill?

Weren't we supposed to be working on that site this week?  Anyone hear anything?

Looks like they made a point to only show clips from the first act, before the killings start.

It's rare...gotta give them kudos on that.

I've watched a bunch of documentaries lately and found most of them worthy of a watch.
Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures (Everyone pretty much acknowledges that he's the man and I still feel that underrates him. -Jack Nicholson)

The Hollywood Complex (Showtime)

Hoop Reality (meh at best)

African Cats (Showtime)

Phunny Business (Showtime)

Why We Laugh: Black Comedians on Black Comedy

On the fictitious side, I recently watched Sex, Lies, and Videotape and The English Patient.

Those top 300 lists are amazing. I will merge them, upload the .pdf to my DropBox and probably look at that document a million times during the rest of my life. The wisdom of crowds is a beautiful thing sometimes. Thanks.

Got thru Carnage the other night, had no idea how it would hold my attention having only 4 characters in one room for 80 minutes, but damn it, they had me.
laugh.gif
I was bored at first, their boys had a fight, blah blah, Jodie Foster was annoying, but Kate Winslet was
embarassed.gif
and Waltz was just perfect (and quickly rising up my favorite actors list, Django may send him to the top of the list) but after about 20 minutes of I don't even know or care what, they got really going, and truly feeding off each other, even Foster got less annoying and I haven't liked her in anything since.....uh, Lambs?

laugh.gif
Maybe Contact, but whatever.  It was just very funny to watch two couples deal over a simple schooly boy fight. The dialogue was great, it's 80 minutes, in out and gone quick, if you can just hang on thru the beginning, you're home free.  The only thing that sucked was the end.  It was like a play.  One minute the movie's playing, then it's not.  Was sudden as @#$%.  But, maybe there was no real way to end it properly.  If you have an hour and a half, give it a whirl, worst case, you can watch Kate the entire time, never a wasted moment.
Iono, 7?  Sounds fair, 7/10.

Dirk...I'm mad that you kinda lied to me about Hunger Games 3. I mean don't get me wrong...these books...(the structure of all of them is 3 even parts with 9 chapters in each part)...I wanna say all of part 1 and the first 7 or 8 chapters of part 2 sucked? A couple moments here and there but just garbage. Aimless, self-absorbed trying to get you to hate these characters that aren't deeply written and don't do anything. So basically Walking Dead season 2.
Then all of the sudden #$#! hits the cotdamn fan and the story just gets rolling. I mean It's so vivid and focused. They finally spend some time detailing and world building past 'oh that's District 4...they fish there.' And the dialogue gets better, the actions just get crisp, everything moves with a motive and somehow this dead book turned into a pageturner. Yeah...it's derivative...she steals from Akira, Starship Troopers, Star Wars, Red Dawn...and there's no excuse for having half a book be sappy, repetitive, shallow garbage, then turn it to 11 for 100 pages.

Every chapter is a new situation, so vividly drawn...it almost excuses so much they didn't bother to touch earlier on...and then...with a few chapters left, tension rising...boom....$%*@+$ the ending. Those last 2 or 3 chapters...

And I do not understand 'how?' in my heart of hearts they could possibly do a real justice to the book and not have it rated R. It just gets savage at a certain point.

edit: he biggest problem with this series of books is that the writer is either too shallow or thinks her audience is too dumb to understand that sci-fi is about allegories and metaphors that use a world we don't know to explain the world we live in and people we live with. She doesn't get that. She gets oh, there's a flying ship...run. Oh there was a war...it sucked. See that President? He's an !%+-hole. Propoganda?...oh...ok. It's lazy. And she hide behind the 1st person narrative by just skipping, ignoring and sleeping through anything that might be challenging or intellectual.
30t6p3b.gif

Well, the target audience was high school freshman, not us.
laugh.gif

I felt the same way, though. You wish someone else could have created it. The ending almost made me forget how much I generally enjoyed the series. I wavered back and forth about whether or not I expected the ending to be... teenie, or dark and gritty. I convinced myself that I wouldn't be disappointed because of how the third one ultimately played out up to that conclusion. Nope. Silly. Predictable. Too optimistic.

Mockingjay was so damn disappointing. I understand anticlimactic...I do. But this...at the end of the day there were like 15 characters that were important in the Hunger Games, they only bothered to make 4 of them kind of 3-dimentional: Cinna, Katniss, Peeta and Haymitch...maybe Johanna. Not one of them gets a real resolution. And there was one big goal of the last book...no one accomplishes it. One big showdown they built up to...no one even showed up for that.

It honestly felt like the last season of Lost or better yet, The Matrix Revolutions.

But you're right, I really did enjoy the first two books...just a little retroactive disappointment.
And for 100 straight pages, I got suckered into getting my hopes up.
laugh.gif

Maybe the ending of the third one just spoiled it for me...as I've gotten some distance from it and sat on it awhile, I've warmed on it some. I still didn't love it, but there is definitely some stuff in there I appreciate more as I've let it marinate.

I loved the first two. Simplistic at times and I really felt like I wanted something more. Like I was absolutely taken in by the plot and the idea behind what they were doing, but like Kev said, it wasn't written for us. An adult, dark take on this would be so epic on film. Maybe they'll knock the trilogy out of the park and we'll get a reboot one day when the current demo is a little older and someone will put a Christopher Nolan Batman spin on it and really do the story justice.
