#%$+ David Lynnhagen.
Crazy Stupid Love... a chick flick that I can get down with.
This movie was GREAT. Directed by Ficarra and Requa, these guys are on route to making a name for themselves in the directorial department. They first debuted with I Love You, Phillip Morris which was given positive reviews, and now this
. Up until Phillip Morris they had only written comedies, such as Bad Santa. The entire movie flowed so well, the acting, the storyline, the pace, as well as the ending. Gosling was terrific as was Carrell, and you could EASILY see right away both had comedic chemistry on the screen
. The film was what you call "a star-studded cast" with Emma Stone, Julianne Moore, Marisa Tomei, Kevin Bacon, etc.... which really says a lot for Ficarra and Requa that they were able to get not just one... or even two (which would be impressive in itself) but MANY well known actors and actresses in one of their debut films.
I feel like I should have seen the twist coming, but somehow I didn't.
The scene where Carrell is in the yard and his ex-wife calls him from the den saying she needed assistance fixing the pilot light was excellent. The bit with the New Balance sneakers, Stone and Gosling back at the house, and many others all were hilarious.
The whole daughter taking pictures for Steve Carrell and Carrell interrupting his son's speech was weird. Those were a couple of the things I could have done away with in the movie.
The thing I liked most about it was that it seemed there were so many characters, and EVERY one of them had their own storyline, yet it worked. Usually when films are like that, there's too much of a "bounce around" effect and you don't really feel like you're centering in on ANY characters just carefully touching the brim of each (example, Contagion). This movie was the exception in that regard.
Loved it.
